Cécile McLorin Salvant covers "Over The Rainbow," "Optimistic Voices," and "If I Only Had A Brain" from The Wizard of Oz, and Gregory Porter's song "No Love Dying," live in concert at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on February 12, 2022.
Over The Rainbow, Optimistic Voices and If I Only Had A Brain were written for the film The Wizard Of Oz (1939). Judy Garland sang Over The Rainbow, and it became her signature song. Here in concert, Salvant sings the opening verse which was omitted from the movie ("When all the world is a hopeless jumble / And the raindrops tumble all around / Heaven opens a magic lane").
If I Only Had A Brain was sung in the film by the character Scarecrow, played by Ray Bolger, when he meets Dorothy. Optimistic Voices ("you're out of the woods, you're out of the dark...") was sung by an unseen chorus as Dorothy heads to the Emerald City. No Love Dying appeared on Gregory Porter's third studio album, Liquid Spirit (2013).
Joining Salvant onstage were Sullivan Fortner (piano), Keita Ogawa (percussion), and Alexa Tarantino (flute, piccolo, alto flute).

For these dates, she performs with a phenomenal new quartet including pianist Sullivan Fortner, who partnered with Salvant on the duo release The Window.

The part from 0:00 to 1:30 ("When all the world is a hopeless jumble / And the raindrops tumble all around / Heaven opens a magic lane / When all the clouds darken up the skyway / There's a rainbow highway to be found / Leading from your window pane / To a place behind the sun / Just a step beyond the rain") is actually from the original Over The Rainbow song. It just didn't make it into the Wizard Of Oz itself. This intro is often used in live theater productions of the show and is included in the sheet music from the movie. Many covers also use this original introduction (Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, etc.).
