I’ve started painting with gouache just to give it a try. I spend my winters in Mexico and no longer wanted to take all my oil supplies. I haven’t had a problem and quite happy with the results. Since I’d never tried it before I went through the process of making a rather large colour wheel 😂. I prefer it over water colours, I’ve been painting with oils since 1962. Unbelievable I know. Love the knowledge you share, thank you from my heart.

im using Gouache as watercolour in urbansketching...initial layers and if i do mistake than go light over dark with its opacity....its so versatile as you had mentioned.
@CecileYadroАй бұрын
I do that too but for portraits

You are very true about the gouche "is an opaque watercolor" it's not! I'm a watercolor Artist, and when I start with gouache...OMG! It was so hard, I have to delete my hardware from watercolor 😅 and change my mind, to understand gouache! I'm still learning, and I love it so much! I preferred gouache than acrylics for sure! They're versatile, it looks beautiful and the same you said, you can re work the areas always you want it! 🥰 thank you for clarifying all the myths of the gouache 😊

Hi Cecile! I was trained to paint with gouache back in my student days and then I switched to watercolors that is my favorite medium. So I can confirm that you are right when you say that gouache is a completely different medium on regard of its handling and properties. Gouache is very versatile and forgiving medium and due to its opaqueness it is easier to scan photograph and reproduce and that is the reason why it was in the past the favorite medium of poster, magazine, cover or packaging illustrators. The main disadvantage of gouache is that it can't be worked in transparent layers and so the final artwork or illustration might lack the depth of colour that gives super realistic results. You can get super realistic results with gouache too, if you know how to work with it, but it is double the work and way more difficult.
@CecileYadroАй бұрын
That's funny because I feel that watercolor is more difficult than gouache. I guess it depends how we use them.
@creativecolours2022Ай бұрын
@@CecileYadro Hi. Of course it depends on how we use each medium but different mediums give different results either way. Watercolour ( and oils too) can be worked in transparent layers, and each and every different layer of colour reflects light with a different way. Our eyes now are able to detect these different light reflections and our brains can put all together to make the final result look like real. Gouache though doesn't have the same properties as it is flat and opaque. It gives more illustrative results but the different layers of colours mix with each other, and reflect the light as one flat layer. Same applies for acrylics, pastels etc. That is great for reproductions as that is the way that camera lenses detect light but doesn't give the same depth of colour as other more transparent mediums do. At the very end everything has to do with what sort of results you want to achieve. Out advantage as modern era artists is that we have all these different types of media available to experiment and get whatever result comes to our minds. It has to do with how much effort and time we want to invest to master and understand the properties of each and every art medium. Gouache though is a great medium. Versatile, forgiving, reworkable and more convenient if you have to produce a series of works for commercial or other use.

As a long time watercoloist I’m venturing into gouache. One question in my mind is that I have heard and read about how layering is difficult . As you will work up the under layer when painting another color on top. Can you layer without disrupting the color underneath ?

Thanks a lot, I've been painting with watercolor and I'd love to try gouache. Can I use the same brushes that I use for watercolor?
@CecileYadroАй бұрын
Yes, and no. I mean the gouache won't damage them, but some watercolor brushes hold too much water for gouache. You could watch this video to find more about gouache brushes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJe8ZICdobSbr7s

Yes I have seen also that people coming from water color treat it like water color and they just water it down. I wonder why not just continue use water color instead of guoche it's cheaper.
