The way I had to resist standing up and applauding in my living room is hilarious. Thank you so much for being open and honest and discussing a topic that isn’t discussed anywhere near enough. Us Black people need to realize that when we are hyper critical and nasty towards each other, that behavior plays right into the hands of the oppressors.

I’ve been saying this for weeks!!! The ignorance from black people and vitriol shown towards Beyonce says more about us than it does her. We still have a lot of unpacking in our community that we need to correct. As a black woman Beyonce has tapped into a level of freedom to me that irritates some of us because we don’t have that confidence in ourselves. Projecting 101 is what this is on top of jealousy. Thank you Sis! You read my mind !!!

You seem to be such a fair person, who looks at both sides of any situation. You took on two heavy topics, hair and colorism and handled it well!! Your hair looked gorgeous, the system worked well for you, but like said, you were going to wait a couple of days and see what happens. Thanks for opening up this conversation! I strongly believe there are 3 things that drive the backlash Beyoncé receives- colorism as you stated, overt sexuality in her craft, and her penchant for privacy and not heavily communicating her personal business. However, it has never stopped her blessings because her talent, drive and legacy cannot be denied. She is definitely a one of one!

I’ll add another: the fact that some remember when she was a subpar singer. That was the running tagline ab DC. “Cute but cant really sing.” The overt vulgar sexuality is a huge turn off for me bc black women complain ab being sexualized and fetish then give their coins to someone who plays into the fantasy and sexuality to make her billions. Non black artists are not as shockingly vulgar and sexual as top black artists these days. WHY is that??? Another thing is Beyonces numbers are severely overblown. They said she broke a record for havinng the largest audience in attendance-53k people-but Taylor Swift had 90k in attendance. The record isnt record-ing

There are hundreds of hair-care lines where people do not know their origins or their owners. The majority/ or all the lines that are on the shelves are mostly by white people, and that has never caused any pause amongst our people. It's not even a thing. However Beyonce is now meant to account and to be crucified for a myriad of sins. Even the expectations towards the product quality is disproportionally higher for a Black owned brand; even for Fenty; than the market stress-tests towards the others. It's an issue!! It's also our own people who do this to one another.

I don’t see how anyone can have a negative opinion about this hair care line, especially if they haven’t tried the products for themselves. Beyoncé tries hard, I like that about her. She tries out different businesses, I don’t see her as an opportunist, she’s a businesswoman. A lot of other celebs have created beauty lines, hair care lines and have been successful, so why is she wrong for trying? People don’t like one person having too much power, so when Beyoncé branches outside of music, they don’t like that. They want her to stay in her lane, it the box that they feel comfortable with her being in.

I love love your commentary. The way black ppl specifically have responded to Cecred is sad to me and some of the comments are a bit scary. If you do not like Beyoncé you won’t like ANYTHING she puts out. However that is their own bias, the lighskin/brownskin/darkskin issue is deeply rooted but also requires a lot of self work. As a Beyonce fan and a Virgo too lol, i am mainly irritated by the comments who are blatantly wrong. This the same woman who put out Black Is King and black ppl were LIVID and the other half didn’t watch it. I think the black race as a whole has suffered a lot of trauma and has a very difficult time moving away from that and healing to a certain extent. We, as a people, need years of therapy. I love Beyonce. I think she is amazing. I am purchasing her products and I have purchased her country song, which I love. AND contrary to popular and ignorant beliefs, Beyonce has supported us in many ways without our knowledge. People don't realize this. She can't help that she's light skinned, beautiful, creative, famous, successful, etc. and she is BLACK! She has to be guarded because SHE ISN'T US. Black people want the world for nothing and when we get something...we often times still complain. Yet, we don't do enough to improve upon ourselves and our community. We put so many requirements, expectations, etc. on people who have made it with their sweat, blood, tears, etc. (applies to regular everyday folks), but ask very little from the people who oppressed us and are still oppressing us. It's mental illness. Also, your hair looks amazing!! It is so shiny and full.

Hey Carolyn! Thanks for sharing your perspective. I definitely agree with a lot of your sentiments but want to push back on the term “reverse colorism”. While colorism shows up in our interpersonal interactions, it’s systemic. We don’t see the reverse (discrimination of people for being lighter) systemically. Definitely valid to feel like there’s an outpouring of resentment from darker skin black folk who have been experiencing the negatives of this system their whole lives. That’s a worthy conversation.

I was looking for this comment. Colorism is the child of Racism. So unless there can be "reverse racism", "reverse colorism" cannot exist. Colorism is systematic and goes far beyond our interpersonal interactions. It affects everything from the length of prison sentences, who gets jobs, to the frequency at which a child is punished in the classroom (regardless of the race of the teacher). Dark-skinned women have for decades been yelling at the top of their lungs about this phenomenon only to have people (particularly light skinned women) deny its existence. So I think this "backlash or reverse colorism" is birthed in the same place as the response that women of color have given to white women refusing to acknowledge their privilege. When you are fighting in a system and those that should be fighting with you begin to gaslight you, it's only so long before they are viewed as tools of the oppressor. This is a conversation that needs to be had, but I don't know that we can when we are still arguing whether or not colorism even exist and if it does, what does it mean.

I love this video and I think the hate Beyonce got around this launch was very weird and disappointing. Colorism conversations are so tough and require so much nuance. As a darker-skinned woman with a light-skinned husband and many light-skinned family members and friends I would not want to discredit someone’s feelings or lived experiences. Colorism is bad for the Black community period. But one also has to take care not to perpetuate “the myth of jealous dark-skinned girls”. For the record, I don’t think you did that (or intended to do so). Those takes minimize the wide-reaching impacts of colorism. Colorism does complicate interpersonal relationships but beyond that it also affects the harshness of criminal justice sentencing, access to housing prospects, the harshness of punishments in school & has so many other harmful impacts outside of teasing. I know you know all of this, but too often I’ve seen other people take well-intended conversations like this and pushed that “jealousy” narrative. Anyway, your hair looks good! Thank you for this review and the conversation during the deep conditioning! I appreciate you!

Cookie I enjoyed your review on Cecred, however what did you mean when you said there is reverse colourism? “reverse colourism” is not possible because reverse systems do not pertain to issues that were designed to oppress groups that systemic racism was designed to subjugate". Colourism was never designed to specifically oppress lighter-skinned people within a given race. Colourism is the specific prejudice, towards people with a darker complexion within a given race. Do light skinned women get backlash, ofcos because in many instances we choose to be oblivious to the privilege that comes with being light skinned within our communities.

Hey there. Yes and agree to what colorism is. This is kind of hard to break down without using examples of dialogue or even body language so let me try. I also said the effects of colorism in SOME CASES haVE created a misplaced resentment from dark skin women against light and brown skin women when they assume incorrectly they are colorist and not interested in unity or treating light and brown skin folks in a way that seems like they are better OR not black enough. Like statement I’ve experienced from a dark brown sis “oh cuz you’re brown with white features you think you’re better than me? You dont even wear your hair natural, are you ashamed of who you are ? ” would be an example. What happens after that SOMETIMES is that you have light skin / brown skin women react to that resentment energy and meet it with the same hateful fire. For example “oh because you think you’re dark skin you think you’re closer to royalty and purity than me? I’m still better looking than you” from a light/brown skin person to a light skin person. So not necessary reverse and I’m annoyed that i used that word because i wasn’t trying to label it like reverse racism which a lot of people don’t believe it exist. But it’s almost like a pedestrian intentionally causing one car to back up and crash into another vehicle and the hit car gets mad and rams their car back into the side of the 1st car. You still have two damaged vehicles with two angry drivers who can’t understand or realize, a third party caused the issue. Do i make any sense ? I’m trying my best

I wish the ‘hair typing’ system was never invented. People have made it so divisive. I really enjoyed your take on the line/topic as well as the demo. I was fully engaged! Glad you like the way it felt on your hair. Generally, I try a new product after asking friends who have similar texture as mine, or watching a KZbin video of someone with my texture. Or if it’s a brand I already use, but a new item I have never tried. When the investment into the new product is small, I don’t worry. I tried a new gel twice last week and hated it. The majority of Cecred reviews are from black women. Do a simple search of KZbin and mainly black women will pop up. Yes, she created it for all races, but she will need black women to be the consistent buyers and hence she should be paying attention to our questions, critiques, and reviews. There has to be a target audience for hair care products. It's nearly impossible to create haircare for "everyone" and be successful. Not buying a celebrity's products, especially at a such a high pricepoint does not mean you want the products to fail. Not all black women are going to buy Cecred...and they don't have to. I have never purchased Pattern or TPH products, but I don't "hate" them or want them to fail.

I’m not sure what happened to your comment but I want to make sure you had a response. @carlyon100 You don’t consider me a lil more mocha frappe? Or i just look like a vanilla caramel to you? I’m just kidding. When it comes to career, i have not received favor. I became an entrepreneur because i wanted to create my own favor. I have a lot of trauma from working in corporate because i felt very silenced. My white name got me to be considered, my resume got me the interview, when i got there I needed a referral. Get what mean. But if i do get favor in what im doing now I will use that shit and bring us with me. Yes I WILL! Because i know my worth and the worth of my people. I feel like this favor we’re talking about has been felt in my experience with men and when i felt that i would not proceed with a man like that. I will be honest with you on this note. I’ve never felt good enough for light skin folk or dark skin folk. And definitely not white people, until folks got to know me. But i would often feel that once i passed the “vibe check” with any of those categories I was the exception. And that is very ick to me. So it may not be what you think i experience looking at me but I’ve seen favor in many areas of life but I’m Always doubted first and I’ve worked hard for my opportunities.

“Beyonce too high for us” grinds my gears because they don’t require these billionaire white men, whose apps they use, to live up to the same standards they set. It boils down to insecurity. If you critique a celeb for a money grab I’m not disputing you. But something about this woman turns people into walking hypocrites. Taraji and tracee’s line came out of nowhere and didn’t receive this much criticism. Beyonce said a couple of decades ago she wanted to open salons. I think Cécred is her way of fulfilling that dream.

Thank you for an honest and informative presentation of Beyonce"s hair products. No products are ideal for everyone. As one commenter said, you can't please everyone and you buy it or not. The hate is ridiculous especially from those who have never tried the products! Pretty sure these products were well researched and tested and are for all hair types! There is an underlying problem of colorism in the black community which has persisted for hundreds of years.

It's a money grab, she should've started a wig line, why isn't she in the Marketing campaigns, she never tells us anything...it's just thoughtless comments. Her mother was a licensed cosmetologist and salon owner, a hair care line makes obvious sense. It's literal nitpicking at every thing and not being reasonable nor rationale. And the audacity to tell a person what they should invest their time and energy into is wild. This video is very on time and thoughtful. And having notes is important when speaking on a subject. Taking note of that for myself. ❤

Respect to you for being brave to discuss the issues surrounding colorism especially towards Bey. It’s hard not to notice that a lot of BW that have been really venomous towards her & this hair line is from browner BW. It’s been consistent since Destiny’s Child and when you point it out, they call you “colourist” or now the new phrase “anti black”. So the audacity to complain that the brand isn’t focused on them is a joke! Even if Bey used other races in her marketing, why not? She’s a global star since she was a teenager and other races do support Bey and buy hair products period. If she only used BW would BW buy immediately? Absolutely not!

You meant well and the idea of peoples prejudices and ignorance projecting on to beyonce is correct. However, there is no such thing as reverse colorism. Just like there is no such thing as reverse racism. An “ism” connotes systemic power which black people cannot exact on the oppressor. Same with dark skin people. If black people or dark skin people have prejudices against white or lighter skinned people, it’s just prejudice, disdain or spite. They don’t have the power in the systemic hierarchy to be racist or colorist. Hope that helps.

Hi there. Sure thing and i know you meant well with this comment. Thank you for watching. this video has aged a bit and I’ve definitely covered this in other videos/lives about mistakingly using the word reverse. I knew the difference, just got caught up in creation. I realize that though I know im human and can make mistakes, i can’t just film an experience while in a flow state. With the reach that I have, I have to be SUPER CAREFUL and almost robotic about every word that I speak and since creating this video I have refrained from making more like this because I had to learn that most ppl don’t know my heart or assume my intention or don’t know my ACTUAL BLACK HUMAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE AMAZING BLACK FAMILY I HAVE With what i share. I don’t read off of a teleprompter, i try to harmonize my written notes but i will be holding off of certain topics until i can afford regular assistance to help ensure the words that flow through me during creation align with my intentions. This was good! I had an unnecessarily tense chat w my Mom and sis about the launch and it aligned with a lot of what you said, boiling down to resentment over her many privileges. It was disappointing, but nothing new in the Beyonce discourse. I am so happy she designed it as a businesswoman and not a sentimentalist. Inclusivity is not just for black folks. Sometimes the narrative is to just be happy for our sis instead of grumbling about not being the main character. Wakanda had a largely dark skin cast and yet we collectively seemed to feel embraced. A win is a win.

I LOVE educated reviews that show that the person in question did research. I LOVE. The conversations were very timely and needed. And the criticism that they wanna see her do what Rihanna did with Fenty and sit in front of the camera so we have reason to buy the products and criticise her hair health. She's a more private person. We haven't seen all her kids. On purpose. You won't run into Beyonce on the street. There's so much criticism that people have to over Beyonce and it's not even the things for which she should be criticised. Beyonce does not need anyone's extra money-- not for more tours or haircare. Black women can do no right even in other black women's eyes. I hate it here. I don’t think it should be considered pocket watching when critiquing billionaires that openly brag about being billionaires in their music. As we know billionaires get to that status through harmful business practices and often off the backs of other people’s work. I believe that it’s fair to critique Beyoncé’s business practices when it has been reported that she uses her power to take people’s publishing in the music industry. I’m aware that the topics are separate, but are in some way connected and contributes to the public being turned off. if we don’t critique billionaires then they’ll continue to get away with harmful practices in the future. I think it’s fair that people are raising an eyebrow at celebrity brands when a lot of times they are just cash grabs, not saying that this is the case with Cécred. I am a fan of Beyoncé and her artistry so I’m not saying that she isn’t a hard worker. We must acknowledge that there are a lot of reasons as to why people are side eyeing celebrities and their brand ventures now more than ever before. I do respect your opinion and enjoy your content so I’m not saying this to start a debate. Just sharing my thoughts.

I don’t know too much detail about the publishing situation because i remember a moment happening with Pharrell, Kelis, and Beyonce. The song in question was taken off for a day on the album but then it went back up so it came across like everything was ok. And to be honest I forgot about looking into that. Let’s see. But i feel you! Money can spawn evil in this world.

Woooo sis. I am sooo glad you realized this. I was not shocked but still disappointed that it’s always this backlash from dark skin women when it comes to anything Beyoncé related. They were releasing videos about her hair product before it was even released saying not to buy it that it isn’t for them. They have pushed this narrative that Beyoncé doesn’t have healthy hair and when we see her real hair say it’s not real. I saw a discussion online about Beyoncé one day and it was a black gay man that said this to black women. He said he feels like Beyoncé triggers certain black women like she is the light skin girl in school that they didn’t like. And I really feel like it’s the truth. Beyoncé triggers so many black women especially dark skin women and I have not seen any other black female celebrity get the level of hate like she did for just existing. It’s weird and it’s really something that needs to be discussed because it’s really not a good look.

Dark , light , we should love each other. What I don’t understand is why light , taupe , yellow black people refer to themselves as”brown “ shouldn’t actual brown girls that do exist be referred to as brown. Ex. Kelly Roland,Mary j bilge are brown women. Not Tracey Ross, not Audra McDonald. Not many light women who call themselves brown are brown. They would never call themselves white because a white women wouldn’t allow it. Own your lightness and let brown women be brown.

I’m confused by your post: There are many shades of “brown”! Tan, taupe, khaki, beige, toffee, coffee, mahogany, caramel, etc. All shades of brown women can and should embrace the melanin in their skin - That’s not a bad thing! Why would we want to create divisions in the black community by drawing lines around who can call themselves “brown”?!? And then, who would decide where the lines are drawn: You’re saying Audra McDonald isn’t “brown”? Ms McDonald is “dark brown” or “medium brown” to me, but u obviously see something different. Please let brown women claim their color: We know who we are, and we love the melanated sisterhood - all shades accepted!

I’ve watched many reviews on Cecred, some liked it and some didn’t. However, it’s truly weird watching women do reviews just to credit or discredit the other’s reviews because the standing them is that “all Black women need to support Beyonce.” Beyonce may be a God to people but she is not YHWH and it’s not our job to make sure she succeeds at everything she does. It’s creepy reading these comments from grown women who obviously have no real direction of their own. To buy a product to do a review, claim that it is good, but then goes back to continuing to use your previous product is false advertisement. It’s a ploy to promote the creator. People generally by different products when they are looking to change, not to convince others something is good…..or not good. All this hype over hair care products that are out of the normal budget of most Black women is absurd. Women, Let’s find something else to be passionate about because this ain’t it.

As a dark skin 60 year young woman who grew up in the south during the 60s and 70s, I can definitely relate to being overlooked and undervalued simply based on my skin tone. Although I don’t know if reverse colorism exists, but I do think that there is a level of hurt that darker skin women still carry around with them and they often direct that hurt at lighter skin women. BTW my mom was a lighter skin woman who unknowingly projected her bias about color on to me. She would not let me wear certain colors but she let my lighter sister wear them and it was not done in a mean way. She simply believed it to be true. Sometimes darker sisters often believe that lighter sisters think that they are more superior and darker sisters will go out of their way to let them know that they are not. I’m speaking from a place of experience. Carolyn I think that a lot of your points were valid. We need healing and whether the negative behavior is called colorism or not it does exist and we can’t deny that.

Her red bob was gorgeous and Bretman has beautiful hair already, so using him was plus as well.

I don’t follow celebrities. And I can still root for the success of an entrepreneurial Black woman named Beyoncé. Because there are enough people who don’t look like us repeatedly telling us to stay in our lane. Why would we promote the same behavior within our communities? That’s an old mindset that keeps us hustling backwards and needs to change, as Carolyn eloquently stated. I also want to state that smaller Black-owned brands without a celebrity behind them can also thrive. Ultimately, when it comes to hair care, the journey is personal and what works for some won’t for all.

So enjoyed your thoughtful commentary on how we as black people teat each other. Beyonce has given back in many ways. During her concert tour she gave money to an HBCU in some of the cities she was in. One HBCU happened to be my alma mater. Thank you for addressing our colorism issues and inability to just support even if we dont want or need the products in question.

Carolyn I first started following you because of the fashion going on a year now. But, as your channel has grown, I follow you for so much more! You tackled the issue of colorism with so much tack and grace as you do more of the topics that you have addressed. I look forward to seeing where you go because I am convinced that you are going far. Continue to be authentically you and I’ll continue to support and follow you! Be blessed 💕
