There are a number of issues with this comparison.. First, the regular Bravo 1 is notably thicker than this LT on which many critiques in favor of the S1 were based. The handle on the S1 would never in my mind be considered more robust or durable than the Bravo's G10 or micarta... the S1's plastic is very vulnerable to heat and abrasion, and will not fare well being wacked upon. It's injection molded plastic, so... you get what you and you're stuck with it. Contrary to the commentary, G10 will be entirely unfazed by a baton, probably same for micarta... and BR will replace your handle in a couple weeks if you ever manage to mess it up. The false edge on the S1 solidly defeats its "survival" persona, it makes batoning more difficult, it cuts into the baton and that does two things; it robs you of solid hit energy transfer, and it chews up and softens your baton. The false edge also thins away the majority of the spine that strengthens the tip, and thats a notable flaw in combination with its 100% exposed/unsupported vg10 tip.. its downright puny weak compared to the Bravo 1 tip in 3v. There are several youtubers who have footage of Fallkniven tips breaking off. Lastly, the false edge weakens the entire front half, and that requires the steeper scandi'ish grind that results in a thicker edge and it simply does not slice as well as the Bravo. I like the exposed pommel on the S1, but the Bravo is readily available in S30vn with a exposed pommel lanyard thing (kinda cool looking too). I own a Bravo (G10/3V) and owned a S1 and A1.. In short, the S1 is more of a military/combat/stabber.. the Bravo is more of a *knife* , a true cutter, a proper do-all bush, camp, hunting, kitchen or soldier's tool that easily adaps to any reasonable task and will hold its edge longer doing it. Nowadays.. all Fallknivens have become over-priced. btw.. my Bravo came with a greatly improved leather sheath. Be sure to pass on any "water proofing" option when buying from knivesshipfree or DLT and instead water form it properly, then water proof it yourself. If you must avoid the Bark River, or simply like the looks/feel of the S1 better, or live where the temps drop way low and you dont want a sub-zero knife freezing your digits off, then I highly recommend you consider the SRK in 3V... for $127 off Amazon its a absolute steal the covers most all of the S1's bases with a better steel with a nice stonewash and a weee bit longer blade matched with a shorter false edge which combins to make it a fantastic do-all option. (despite various stock photos, the 3v absolutely does come with a short 1/4" 5mm ricasso in front of the finger guard, not the big ricasso shown in photos.)

The S1 Pro uses COS steel, even better than VG10 and competitive with steels like CPM3V. I think the length of the Bravo 1.25/1.25LT is better than the Bravo 1/1LT. In my limited view, Fallkniven knives are the king of very cold weather locations and Bark River knives are the king of every other location.

I have a Bark River Bravo 3V steel. It has a convex blade, but for some reason the factory sharpened the last fraction of the outer edge angled instead of convex. I don't know why they did that, but I believe it makes the edge more brittle. I accidentally tapped the edge lightly on a rock surface, and two tiny chips came off.

I found that I had to make the edge bevel a little shallower to carve easily. Did you feel the same. Love the knife! The 154cm sharpens easily enough. Seems like it loses "razor sharp" quickly, but keeps a working edge for a long time.
@zetterberg7 жыл бұрын
Yea i find the 154 workable too ( easier than i had heard to get back after dulling) usually just a strop. The sk4 has a really robust tip that is awesome for getting the bowl started in a spoon, and eats wood in the early stages. Than switch out to a finer mora for finishing.

Thai I just got the bark river Aurora and am not very impressed with it. The quality of the blade geometry is very sloppy and unfinished. Towards the tip on the left side of the blade there is a small area where there is excess metal where it is not convexed but a flat grind going to a micro bevel. The straight part of the blade is uneven and when you place the edge 90° to a flat surface you can see wavy light shining through. The straight edge portion has a blade geometry of up to 28° and the belly is pushing 35° or more. I wasted a few days going from stroping going to lower and lower grit stones trying to sharpen a brand new out of the box never used Aurora. Finally I saw a video from Virtuovice of completely reprofiling the Bark River blade due to bad geometry and since I had already scratched up the new blade, I went ahead and did a full sharpening and re-grinding of the Aurora. It worked! In addition the micarta handle on the left side just before the blade has a dull finish issue whereas the rest of the micarta has a gloss finish. My Fallknivens A1X and S1X with their thicker blades(7mm and 6mm respectively) had perfectly contoured edges and came perfect from the manufacturer. In fact a brief stroping of the Xs and it is crazy sharp. I wanted a Bravo 1.25 in CPM-3V, not so sure now.

I don't like thumb ramps on my BRK except the Bravo Survivor. I don't have the wear you have shown on any of my sheaths and I have had the for a few years. A closer comparison would be with the rampless Bravo 1.25 with the standard thickness and grind. As always good review.
@Kman31ca7 жыл бұрын
VG 10 does chip pretty bad. I used my F1 setting up some hunting blinds. While chopping some of these thick willow bushes I accidentally hit a couple rocks. Not to hard, I thought at worst it would maybe have a few dings in the edge. But when I looked at it, it was chipped horribly. I had to re profile the whole edge. I've hit rocks in the same way with other steels, and it would leave slight marks which came out quickly. But that VG 10 is decent steel. But far to brittle for being a survival knife in my opinion. And yes, I know rocks should be avoided at all cost with any knife. But for a knife that is basically famous for a survival knife for Swedish pilots. I'd choose a different steel.

Bark River have made knives that are closer in specs to the Falkniven. I can never understand why people compare two knives with completely different geometry and profiles. Other than both being knives, there is VERY LITTLE that’s the same so as to make a comparison. You may as well do a video comparing apples to oranges. They have completely different tastes and applications; but they’re both fruit.

that's the wrong view. the two knives are different to be sure, as in all things. but the applications of each certianly overlaps. this video analyze the advantages of one over the other for uses enumerated. Cedric supports his arguments clearly and i would agree that it makes sense. Your views and experience may differ. But to discount a comparison wholely based on the fact that each knife is constructed and styled differently is not conducive to an entertaining and lively discussion of ideas and experiences.

Mine came with the dangler sheath and I wore it all of the time. Only took it off to sleep. Liked it so much I purchased an F1. I have no experience with Bark River knives but they look excellent. Say Heah Cedric, Watching this video again, I was reminded that because the way the Sheath's are on my Fallkniven A-1 and my H-1, I could carry both side by side, a lovely piece of kit. I usually like carrying this combo on some of my scout's when checking out new areas with perhaps a overnighter. The handles are maybe a bit warmer to use in cold and wet conditions. I went with the Fallkniven H-1 because it's similar to my 3V Skookum Bush Tool. The Bravo 1, I have (3) of them, one in A2 which is part of a 4Knife Set, all in A2 with Green Jade G-10 Handles. Ofcource I pick and choose from the set on which I ones I carry. I have the Woodland Special, Bravo 1, Bravo 2, and the Golok. My two Bravo 1's in 3V I like to team with my Himalayan Imports M-43's. I have (2) also, the larger one with the Black Buffalo Horn Handle is the one I usually like to team with my 3V, Black G-10 Handle Bravo 1. A great combo to take on a overnighter. The smaller one has a Cream Bone Handle with Tan Steaks and it's a 10" blade. I especially like this combo when I just add my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw., I Usually don't have to take a hatchet along because the Khukuri is a pretty good chopper. I usually don't use this set in snowy and wet conditions, but they do perform in any conditions with no problems. I guess I'm just like you, I luv both sets, but I do favor my Fallkniven's in wet and snowy conditions, but they also perform in all weather conditions. I feel safe using either or. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

The Bark River knife, with the exception of that thumb ramp and the shallow convex grind, pretty much mimics my all time favorite hunting knife. That one is a 40 year old Sheffield made Charlton Ltd. in a beautiful pattern welded "Damascus". It is, I should nite, also a flat grund. A wonderful blade. Predates all the cheap Pakistani ""Damascus" out there now. The "ramp" on the Bark River seems totally useless to me. Without it, a very simple one-piece sheath would work fine, and be secure with no silly retaining strap. That is what I have. Almost looks like a Scandinavian sheath without the dangler...Good comarison. That ramp and the sheath would also cause me to choose the S1 over the Bark River. But fortunately, I have my trusty old Charlton. So I doubt I'll ever have to make that choice.

I have heard some things that have always put me off bark river.... such as selling knives with bogus crappy/average steel as high quality steel. I have also heard that the owner is something of a dick. If not an out and out criminal. Maybe thats all just rumour but still doesnt inspire me with confidence and ive never heard such rumours about fallkniven.

Those instances are pretty rare... plus don’t forget about the lifetime warranty and spa treatments that BRKT provides. If your knife ever breaks, they will fix it or replace it, no questions asked. But, Fallkniven knives are definitely better

@@svens.1917 your lips-n-ass are overpriced too, but I guess Justin Case didnt mind, all he could say is "Bam" when you were done with him. Or maybe I got it wrong, maybe you're just a childish dipshit talking about people's moms in the comments section for knives?

@@dash8465 i don't even want to speculate on how you managed to find out that his lips an ass is overpriced.
