Invest in some liquid bandage. Really great to heal cuts fast and waterproof. Also I wonder if those white Japanese sponges would clean the blades better. It’s allows you to scrub with just water alone. I think sometimes they refer them as magic sponges. They use up as your use it.

12:15 The girls from Silky Saws Australia taught me that Australian eucalypts have the most acidic sap of any tree species. Oh, from experience, Eucalyptus oil will remove the sap, but it's way more expensive than WD-40 (which is also mildly acidic btw). I use euc. oil to clean the wood crud from my saws and choppers, and then spray my blades with lanolin oil. As for wear, the coating on my BK2 had a lot of wear and scratches when I got it (the $30 deal). I removed the coating when I refurbished/restored it.

I just realised what that coating looks like. I used to cart hydraulic rams from big machinery (D11 dozers etc) to a Hard-chroming plant in Maryborough QLD (if memory serves correct). There is a type of hard-chroming that looks much like that. Even newly re-hard-chromed rams had a similar sheen. Perhaps that explains the high HRC claims? I guess they don't disclose the chemical structure of the coating on the knife.
@BradGryphonn
@BradGryphonn 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrJedi5150 Nice. Thank's for the info @Jedi5150 Looks a lot like Black Hard-Chrome. But yes, tungsten carbide properly bonded to the steel should last a near lifetime. Hard chroming has a limited life when used in the coal industry. Dozer rams that push coal and other hydraulic machinery work in fairly abrasive and corrosive environments. I have some photos of a D11 with a high wide blade (6 metres wide, 2.5 metres high I think) that was used to push coal all day. The entire face of the dozer blade shone with a high polish. I think you can find it on the old Panoramio site if you search Boonal Siding Australia.

One fun trick for you to try the next time you clean your knives, use a gel style hand sanitizer. As far as getting sap and wood off of a knife it works exceedingly well for me. I own the S1XB and can attest to how ridiculously hard that coating is. I wanted to take a little bit of that coating off of the blades convex grind, just so I could get a nice shiny blade with a black spine. I had to use a diamond bit dremel to get it off, and I went through 2 of those bits that are now destroyed due to that coating. Overall the S1X is a beast of an outdoor knife. I have put mine through 3 deer and 1 elk, and it goes with me on every camping and packing trip. After all the knives I've used over the years it's nice to finally find that one that does it all.

Nice test. With not having read all the comments, maybe it is answered, I will dare to take a "shoot from the hip" about, what a Rockwell hardness on 83 could mean for a coating. In my "interpretation" of this, it could mean, that the "layer of molecules and atoms" that sort of "makes or is" the coating will be 1.: more than one atom or molecule (most likely molecules) thick, and have a level above the blade, height, so to say, measurable on a microscopic level, and 2.: that layer of molecules / atoms will be compressed, with a pressure higher than these 83 RWH applied to it. So, if this coating is put on a knife blade with eg. 59 RWH, then if the applied pressure is between the two numbers, like with these "small ball tests", eg. then the material under the coating will give in and compress, but the thickness of the coating layer, so to say, will be unaffected. On the other hand, if the material under the coating is harder than these 83, maybe like 100, just to be a little above, then it is the layer of coating, that will compress, so to say, before the material underneath will be affected. This is my idea of this. Right or wrong? On the other hand, it seems, that the molecular structure of the coating itself might be quite strong, and so it should be able to withstand friction very vell, as your test on this dramatically described wood also shows, in some ways at least. If others are better informed about this, and how it can be, and I am wrong, please comment on it? Nice day and "wood description" no matter what!!! :o)
