*Further review notes* The original Terrasaur knife was sold under the ‘Off The Map Knives’ brand, also called the Terrasaur and first debuted in 2009 as a collaborative design between Joe and Brian Andrews. Examples are easily found via google image search. This version is the same pattern with a plastic handle. I guess you could say its an ‘iteration’ of that knife. Mora Garberg does have some advantages in its fit and finish and is a great knife. I try to answer as many comments as I can on my newer videos, but please watch it all before you say I didn’t address something I, in fact, did! Some pros/cons and neutrals I feel like highlighting: Garberg beats the Terrasaur in slight fit and finish. The DLC coating also protects more of the blade toward the edge. The sharpened spine is a little more sharp on the Garberg. Both factory edges were about the same keeness out of box. The steels feel about the same during continued use in terms of edge retention and stability. The sheaths are about as good as each other. Multimount (Garberg) is possibly worth more to people looking to mount the knife. The condor has a better thumb launch. Both have a lifetime warranty. The condor is half the price. It roughly meets the needs of me, a user who doesn’t claim to be carving rocking horses, complex deadfall traps, yurts or ebony skull lanyard beads on the regular with my knife. Usage may vary if your skills, either real or inagined, take your knives to a higher needs place. They both make feathersticks, stock remove wood, split kindling, pry and lever bark off trees, cut food and cardboard about as good as the other. I will gladly spend more money on a knife simply on aesthetics or brand loyalty myself. Totally get it. Play nice, Mora fans!

its foolish to spend more for a knife when the less expensive knife is just as good or even better...An expensive knife doesn't make it a good knife

Your notes match mine, I also recently got both a Terrasaur and Garberg. Fit and finish and the spines are noticeably better on the Garberg. Sheath wise I don't like the Terrasaur plastic, it's a cheap soft easily marred material I don't think is going to last in a usable sense comparatively long. For a first time knife or a vehicle backup I think the Terrasaur is a great investment due to the price. I definitely wouldn't leave my more expensive Garberg in the car, or hand it to someone in a teaching situation.

The terrasaur makes my hand cramp up when carving. The garberg handle fills my palm better and prevents cramps, especially when I choke up on it to carve. The condor terrasaurs price makes it where I can put one in all my cars and bags for occasional use but the garberg is what I take camping or backpacking.

As of now: Condor Terrasaur 45€ Mora Garberg stainless 53.80€ (60€ with multimount) Mora Garberg carbon 70€ (including the multimount) If I didn't have a steel preference, I'd go with the Garberg stainless. It's the better knife (which doesn't mean the Terrasaur is bad). I expect the Garberg carbon to come down in price some more next year. But even now I would prefer it over the Condor. The price difference is worth the overall better quality and ergonomics. But that's personal preference. I own all three knives multiple times. I find myself using the Garberg more often.

@JohnSmith-gs4lw
@JohnSmith-gs4lw 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. BTW, technically not differentially treated according to their site; they are harder below the surface, that’s why they grind the spine down. But Pete said exactly what I’ve been saying ever since the Terrasaur roared to life: this is going to be what finally drops the price on the Garberg. I’m the biggest Mora fanboy there is. But I never bought into the hype around the Garberg. And to answer the question of why the carbon steel is more than the stainless, that’s because people will pay more. Mora is excellent at what a company should be excellent at: making money. People are going to hype the Garberg and hype carbon steel so Mora is going to charge whatever the market will bear. Well, now we have something called competition. And competition is always a good thing. Despite what the socialists tell you.

Great review and great channel. It is nice to see a knife review that does not copy exactly the format for every other one. People seem to have forgotten how weird it is to see only hands of an anonymous person on a screen as a trusted source that informs your choices for purchasing knives. Also, it is nice to see content that does not focus on knives that are more suited as jewelry or ones that are used to only open envelopes and Amazon boxes. Thanks -

I have an original Terrasaur knife made by Off the Map Knives. It was my first quality knife and had it shipped to Australia in 2010.. It cost $200 USD shipped, which was a lot of money at the time. Brian Andrews's waiting list was 9 months. It has one of the best edges, amazing for feather sticks etc and so easy to sharpen. The sheath was awesome too. I wanted to buy the Bushcrafter model but Brian decided to stop knife making which was such a pity.

This is not something that would likely come up in the Australian context, but the Swedish knifemakers (I am thinking of Mora and Fällkniven in particular) have made a point of choosing handle plastics that perform well at cold temperatures. I guess this would be worth testing out ... to see if the Terrasaur handle becomes hard as rock and slick below freezing as compared to the Garberg handle.

Well now as a lover of Mora and Conor it was an interesting video to me. It was a fair and unbiased comparison and you are quite right the price tag of a knife is very important to many people who just can't afford the high end blades these days or the prices of the not so high end but still need a blade they can rely on. This was as up close and personal as you can get without being able to play with the blade myself and for that I thank you because now I can go out and buy a Terrasaur with confidence knowing I am onto a winner. Keep up the good work my friend you have no idea what a great help you are (Ok maybe you do by now some one MUST have told you.) when it come to getting a good blade for an affordable price.😁

Garbergs are $79-83 USD on Amazon in the US right now. Edited: I have never gotten the hype on these. I picked up my carbon Bushcraft Black for $33 and never saw a need to go to the Garberg. All Moras are about indestructible. Heck my Companion in carbon steel does everything I need a knife this size to do. If I need something just slightly more heavy duty, I have a dozen knives to choose from that are more "hd" than a Garberg. Another good video though. I really appreciate all of the ones you do. Terrasaur is a grest value. However, Garberg is the only one with stainless option. The Stainless Garberg is overlooked over the carbon but it is cheaper and not significantly worse. It also having a unique stainless steel among the Mora line is a plus whereas the carbon steel is same as from the Bush.

After 6 months of use I have the following thoughts about the Terrasaur: 1. The sheath sucks, full stop. The knife sits way too deep in the sheath and doesn't want to come out. The thumb ramp doesn't help the slightest bit getting the knife out. It should be on the opposite side. Therefore, I will make a Kydex sheath for the Terrasaur. The original sheath is completely useless. 2. The blade is actually quite nice. If you get a decent Terrasaur (the quality of the blade, especially the grind varries a lot), you will have a well made blade with a decent grind that works well for wood work. Some people prefer the more pronounced belly of the Garberg, some prefer the less pronounced belly of the Terrasaur (which is similar to a Mora Companion). I wouldn't pick a clear winner between the Garberg and the Terrasaur, but the Garberg's blade overall feels better in terms of quality. So the blade comes down to personal preference. I like them both. 3. The handle of the Terrasaur not only feels less comfortable compared to the Garberg, it also lacks traction. While both handles are not rubberized, the Garberg has a nice texture which provides good traction while the texture of the Terrasaur is slippery in comparison. It's more for the look of the knife instead of really providing a better grip. On top of that I prefer larger handles, which the Garberg happens to have. I also like the symmetric design of the Garberg which feels perfect to me in all grip variations. On top of that, the handle of the Terrasaur is not very robust. You better never hit the handle when batoning wood. There is only a very thin layer of plastic above the blade spine where it sits in the handle. A few hits with a piece of wood and that plastic will break / split exposing the spine inside the handle. On the long run, that's not gonna hold up very well. So better be carefull when batoning and stay away from the handle. The Garberg on the other side doesn't mind you hitting the handle for hours and hours with a baton (not that I would recommend doing that). The handle of the Garberg is made of polyamide which is a very tough plastic material. It really can take a beating without showing any sign of abuse worth noticing. While I'm not really into batoning (aside from making smaller kindling), the toughness of the Garberg's handle to me is a big plus. The Terrasaur really is not a bad knife for the price. The blade is really nice (if you get a good one), the handle design is decent for typical bushcrafting tasks. But I highly recommend getting another sheath for the Terrasaur and not abusing the handle near the spine as it is way too thin / weak in that area. A little more plastic would have made quite a difference in that area. After all, you get what you're paying for and for most tasks the Terrasaur is a more than decent knife.

I purchased 2 of the Terrasaur's in black, months apart. On both, I had to remove some plastic "sharp" burrs from the handle, "dull" the protruding metal at the pommel that was stabbing my palm, sharpen spine and strop blade. This is a really good knife! At this price point (I paid ~$43 @ KnifeCenter) I think a better comparison would be to the Mora Bushcraft black (~$40 total @ Third party/Amazon; "Amazon" is charging ~$53 inc. tax). The Garberg is more than twice the price at $90. Mora fit and finish is better, for sure. But, you are getting a full tang Garberg style knife, for a Mora Black price. I own all of these. I still choose the Mora 2000 (for all around use) and the Terava 110 or 140 (for wood Prep). Just for Sh*ts and grins - The Terava 110 fits perfectly, like a glove, in the Morakniv Bushcraft: Black or Forrest sheath.

@@chriskp This thread is 3 years old. I was making a price comparison for bushcraft knives around $40. Quote, "But, you are getting a full tang Garberg style knife, for a Mora Black price." The Garberg carbon was 90 bucks at that time; still is. Yes the Terrasaur is not just close, it is a Condor knock off version of the Garberg carbon. I wouldn't call it a clone, more like real close cousins! They are both great knives. However, the Garberg is more refined in every way. I still choose the Mora 2000 and a Glock 78 bayonet just reprofile the edge.

If you leave the Condor in the same shed, its handle may fare worse than the Garberg. Polypropylene's melting point is lower than polyamide's. On the other hand, we're not talking melting point, but softening point. Possible to compare them, but these temperatures are well outside the intended use.

I live in the EU, here a Mora Bushcraft Black is cheaper than Cold Steel Finnhawk (about 35 Euro). A Mora Garberg stainless with all it's fancy multimount + accessories cost about as much as the Terrasaur... Speaking of which, Condor Bushlore with fancy micarta handle is in the same price range (+/-5 Euro, a total of 65 to 70 Euro). They also sell Bushlore blade blanks (20-22 Euro), if you fancy a knife handle of your own. If you are on a budget Hultafors Grovkniv is 9 Euro, while Mora Robust goes for 10-11 Euro. And so... It seems shipping accross the world DOES INCREASE prices!... who knew huh? =)

On knife design the terrasaur is to me a lot better. I wish the Garberg looked like the Terrasaur. The finish in the Garberg and track record is better. On knifes like this I sharpen the whole bevel but keep secondary bevel (micro bevel) The secondary bevel I do however transform from a V to a convex. I get a convex microbevel reducing the drag, make it easier to sharpen, while keeping the strength. I do this by sharpen in hand by scences; touch/feel and ocular observation. Beeing less dependant on other thand primitive sharpening routines improve the chances on keeping the blade sharp and stable.

Garberg fan boy here...not butt hurt Condor filled the full tang price point niche most mora fan boys wanted from mora...so I bought two. And peeps comparing an expensive car thats always in the shop to a cheap car isn't exactly a good comparison.

Poliamide Is not as flexible as polipropilen, but Is way more tenacious and allowes better finish in molded pieces. Polipropilen wears off faster.
