Kind of a review of the Fallkniven S1x, but less of a review and more just slaughtering this atrocious design and execution.

🤣 I've been stung too many times by manufacturers who just don't care about their customers. I've totally given up with Falkniven especially and I'm glad I've managed to at least stop one person making a bad decision. Go and get a custom from ZlKnives or Savchenko on Instagram. Awesome dudes, making amazing knives for very very affordable prices. Cheaper than Fallkniven.

@@stroppystuff641 The sad thing is: Once a company beomes large enough and the finance guys take over price is ofter decoupled from cost and quality and is based solely on the market. So marketing is working on the brand instead of the product. Next step is cutting costs and that means lower quality for higher prices. It's a shame really.

It's possible there was some grit or sand on the wood I was cutting which caused the roll but I doubt it. The edge retention generally seems okay on it, I just really dislike the design. @@stroppystuff641 as you know I really like fallkniven but I do think the S1 is a bit of a miss. I don't have a single one. It's either too big or too short. I like the A1 F1 combo a lot more. As for the X series I think it's made for the fans. I don't dislike it but I think it kinda goes against the intent of fallkniven knives being cold resistant knives that are grippy for gloves it doesn't make much sense to keep the same handle scales yet expose the tang. After living in the tropics for several years I got rid of everything (except my Buck 110FG and Vanguard - my hunting knives) and replaced everything with a PC, F1 and A1. Especially leather suffers badly in humid tropical areas and just had to be replaced. Very happy with my Fällkniven combo. The little PC sits in a belt pouch, the F1 is my EDC fixed blade which I swap out for the A1 in the countryside when it might be needed.

i think in situations where someone's carrying a fixed blade on their person, you've got to expect that the knife might be pressed into some laborious, repetitive and overall "hard" tasks in less-than-ideal conditions. i can see how the handle on that fallkniven could leave the user with burning blistered hands in those sorta use cases. i've seen a bit of a trend of late for knife tangs extending proud of handle scales, and i think it can eff right off. it's as if market research indicated that "full tang" construction helps sell blades, and some manufacturers thought "okay! we're gonna make something _even tangy-er_ ".

The rattling from the sheath is because of the knife being loose inside. And, it's Intentional. Here in Laponia we get low as -40-50c degrees and then be sure it will stuck inside of it, so you know. It was made with the help of soldiers and hunters who are experineced in Arctic climates. Most Sami knives, like the Leuku, also sits ä little loose where the steel meet the sheath. Hope it became clearer now. Be safe with knives

I am glad I didn't have your experience. I got the S1x and the A1x a few months ago and have not had a chance to use it. But after holding it for periods at a time and stroping constantly because I am chomping at the bits to get out and use it, I find it weighty but comfortable. I plan to wear buckskin gloves when ever I use it so the grippy scales works great, even still holding it bare hand is comfortable though I haven't choppped anything yet. I find the sheath passable but very noisy if the locking bar is not applied, mine does not rattle when locked. I don't buy their excuse regarding the freezing temperature may cause your knives to become stuck. I have never had that experience with any knives in the winter of north America. All in all a great knife with a perfect convex grind. I am surprised that your knife had that crazy edge problem. I would send it back, period! No need to deal with such an expensive knife and hating it. I have had issues with the Bark River knives initial quality with their factory convex edges being wavy and uneven. I had to reprofile my brand new Aurora completely. Hopefully as time progress you would appreciate it more if you hold on to it.
@stroppystuff641
@stroppystuff641 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam! I understand where you're coming from with some of this although I don't necessarily agree with all of it. For example the handles being comfortable with gloves, it's very possible to make the handle comfortable with and without gloves, but Fallkniven always pull the "cold weather" card on us as an excuse. Just because it works well with gloves doesn't mean you should neglect the gloveless usability, especially when handle shape is key for grip rather than handle material. I do plan on keeping it, I'm going to make some micarta scales and flush fit them to the tang so that it's all nice and comfortable to use for long periods as a bushcrafter :)
@samthai818
@samthai818 2 жыл бұрын
Changing the scales should make the S1X more comfortable to hold. I hope you were able to rectify the uneven edge problem. I can't believe fallkniven let such a product out of their factory, and I thought Bark River had quality issues. I believe you also weren't thrilled with the thickness of the blade at 6mm. I have to admit that I am also amazed how a knife at just over 5" can be so beefy. But it works. The X series with its very thick blades also comes as probably the sharpest knives out of the box. I like the heft for clearing small branches from a piece of wood for poles or walking sticks. The closest knife to the S1X is my Coldsteel SRK in San Mai, and I believe the Fallkniven is superior. Though not always because I believe the coldsteel master hunter is superior to the F1X. These knives are just as personal to each user as a pair of shoes. Any I enjoy would probably not be useful or beneficial to another person. Luckily there are so many choices. Good luck with your modification! I hope it works out for you.

I have the F1X Elmax. Don’t have any of the issues you mention here. Blade absolutely perfect, shaving hair out of the box. Sheath fits tight. Feels great in the hand. LOVE the thick blade/tang. My complaint is that the back edge of the blade isn’t sharp enough for sparking ferro rod effectively. Awesome knife. I found your review unnecessarily scathing. I have a Fallkniven F1x (so not the same model, obviously) but the fit and finish seems much better than your S1x. My blade is perfect and the knife fits the sheath well (very secure and no rattling when locked in place). My handle seems better finished too - not the same sharp edges you describe. @@stroppystuff641 I also bought one of the S1x knives and it is perfect. The HiddenTag checked out, so it's legit. My sheath also had rough edges on the webbing cuts (took me a couple of minutes to smooth it off), but otherwise the fit and finish is excellent and the knife fits snugly into the sheath. My blade is perfect - and extremely sharp out of the box. Rather than showing your blade after you had worked on it, I think it would have been fairer to show the blade brand new, and tested the blade without messing with it. So, given my positive experience with the S1x and the F1x (admittedly a very small sample size), I think your review is rather unfair on Fallkniven as a company.

His blade was chipping out constantly and Fallkniven told him that chopping small sticks was gross misuse of the knife and that it was designed for precision cutting tasks. In what world is a 6 mm thick blade suitable for precision cutting tasks? Fallkniven customer service sucks, their design sucks, their manufacturing sucks and their quality control sucks 😂

I had the same issue with the factory edge using it out of the box to make a fire drill; multiple micro chips on relatively soft wood. After my own restoration of the convex edge, this no longer occurred. I’m hearing this a lot from Falkniven owners so seems more the factory bevel. I agree with you on the “sharp angles” on handle. Ironically I felt their sheath modification was great in its simplicity but they worked out one problem and created another: - thermorin scales : soft thus TOO thin in 2 months of non heavy use they peaked off from the points where they were fastened by screws; less than 1mm thermerin held by screw. I actually emailed Peter as to what I thought a great marketing idea of multiple replacement scales; since they are detachable one could “dress up “ one’s knife like multiple ties for one suit. Also maybe micarda??? No plans for that was the response nor are there ANY after market people making generic replacements that one can have shipped. Leading back to: - even if there were it would negate the modified sheath as the opening and quite imaginative fastening lock that really WILL support the knife upside down can’t accommodate anything other than the thin thermorin handles - I even get the concept of the scales not flush with the handle back if one is batonning this protects the delicate thermorin but exposes the hand - they FINALLY FIXED the lanyard hole. Put it at the end point of the handle which was a bitch on their snapping retainer sheaths as the retainer covered the hole negating ability to attach lanyard as well as impossible to easily re- stow with gloves on. But irony again - they didn’t need to move lanyard hole as the new sheath requires no snap retainer. - again I liked the new sheath but given I went through 3 sets of replacement scales I eventually hand wrapped the handle which made the new sheath I LOVED obsolete - the back of handle? The only application over a flat extended pummel is what “glass breaking”? Or more realistically combat skull crusher - it tends to lose the hammer function way more applicable on a regular basis than a EMT “car rescue” To conclude with my humble recommendations as an owner and lover of more than 10 Falkniven knives: 1) keep the true full tang and replacement handle possibility. Sell from factory with thicker micarta handle. 2) keep same excellent sheath design but obviously widen the opening to accommodate the thicker handle. ( personal note I am not a kydex fan. Kydex does not handle temperature change especially cold well. Good old fashioned plastic does. I believe Falkniven once came to a similar conclusion having tried kydex) 3) offer choices of scales. This allows one to keep an extra pair on them should an accident in the field occur or more likely to dress up that old suit with a new tie instead of buying a 100 new suits for each affair. We are not all girls yet. 4) go back to flat pummel. When I say “hammer “ none of Falkniven handles were ever good for hammering but if hammering the knife into a stump to more expeditiously sharpen tent stakes, spears ( as from my journey on KZbin not “being girls”= thinking oneself a navy seal/neanderthal/warrior) a flat pummel is better and if one must still crush the occasional skull of the other tribesman stalking you through the forest. Thickness tends to be subjective as to what one wants to use a knife for. I do agree that this level of thickness ( equal to the A2 which I also own and is of acceptable chopping length) diminishes practicality as the knife for more utilitarian use. I’ve never had the original S1 or F1 snap and the worked out the reinforced point and shortening of swedge to pass a Survival Lilly test. Again why thicken a blade that size and reduce more common cutting camp chores? Combat again? This knife will go through a car hood but again how often do we need to do that? I do personally like the added weight of it in my hand but that’s just me. For me there are more goods than bads, the S1x works for me with my own modifications that sadly lead me to saying goodbye to a sheath I actually found innovative. It seems Falkniven will flatten one tire to reinvent new wheels

Some really solid points👍. I eventually made some micarta scales for myself actually and it greatly improved the knife, I posted a video about it after I posted this one. I've seen lots of reports of fallkniven blades chipping and it's likely due to them burning the edges while grinding. One of the guys from the DBK discord got really badly treated by the Fallkniven customer service too, they said the X series wasn't suitable for chopping and he was abusing the knife 🤣

Sorry but you slightly overshoot. I perfectly understand your anger about the blade, that is an absolute no go, should never happen and questions seriously FKs quality control. You must send it back and hopefully get a discount together with a brand new knife. As for the rest of your review you get carried away by your anger. The thickness makes the knife a batoning champion and used as survival knife, saves a hatchet. The sheath features two perfect blocking mechanisms and is designed for subzero environments. The rattling is a consequence of grantig the necessary space with makes sure the blade never block-freezes in the sheath. Your TRC will never be accepted with that sheath for military use around the polar circle. Etc, etc,. Bottom line: your complain is more than valid but the knife is big stuff if delivered as should. @@stroppystuff641 I like the EKA Nordic in most aspects. It has better cutting than for example the Mora Garberg, although being thicker than the Garberg. Also looks drop dead gourgeous in the handle, which, with the "thumb guard", is made for carving both towards and away from the you. One minus is it has not a true scandi grind, but a micro grind and it's bcs to prevent from chipping, my guess is. One can instead self grind a "Scandivex", I've heard. The newer model comes with a leather sheath, but i'm ordering an older Kydex version which comes with a sharpener and fire steal on it, as spare part. At least I'm considering to do so. It's a battle of a better steel vs better grind. Without some hard foam in the tip of the sheath, most knives are rattling. Thickness and weight - you could have chosen the S1 Classic - 100g lighter. That's why I've sold mine - not choppy enough. The S1x seems pretty customizable, so the lack of roundness finish, or the thickness of the scales, don't seem such a big problem. But if you paid over 300€, I can understand your views. Thanks for the video.

Strange that the QC on your knife was done so poorly. I have had none of the problems you've had. For the the S1X completes it's role as a easy to sharpen knife quite well, i do not use it as a substitute for an axe. Which i guess is something people are doing with loads of different knives. I do baton logs when they're cut to make "inner sticks" for fethering and so on. I've had it out for extended periods of time, and having worked in the industrial sector for some years my hands really aren't bothered by either the coldness or the grip feel. Also there i do not have the issues you're facing. The transition between the tang and the scales is near flawless. Barely noticeable, and a quick "flat polish" on the sides reviled no "spot shininess" which would indicate a uneven surface the same way it will on a car body etc etc. I've not managed to roll the edge so severely that a quick stropping has not fixed it, even using it on hardwood. I guess the absolutely atrocious part of Fallkniven is how they managed to let that knife through production and in to customer hands. Seeing this video almost makes me wish i could refund mine. To make them finally take the playing field seriously. It seems, they're comfortable with their brand name and have started getting lazy, which sadly is common for every industry.

Never liked the overpriced Fallkniven stuff. I had the original F1 and even that was overly thick in with again overly thick convex grinds. As you experienced, I also get quite a few of chips and rolls after few minutes light use. Which made me totally loose my faith on VG10. I do not think they got the heat right on their knives and this is surprising as they have been made in Japan. Japanese usually know how to heat treat, especially if its their own steel.

I believe the reason the knife was made that thick is for prying. I read that Swede fighter pilots are issued this knife. There’s no doubt in my mind that this knife was made to be a survival knife, not so much a bushcraft knife. I’ve never seen it perform any task exceptional well. With that being said, I don’t even own a single knife from Fallkniven. I can’t bring myself to spend that much money on a mediocre performing knife that comes with an ugly sheath. I even saw Joe X destroy it easily, which is expected; most knives will break/fail when abused, I just didn’t expect the Fallkniven to fail that quickly for a knife at its price point. I know 1095 is cheap steel, but I love Esee’s knives in the way they perform and their “No questions asked” warranty.

@@stroppystuff641 the QC surely has got nothing to do with the blade stock. The A, S, Fx series, as far as I am aware from online reviews and documentation are meant to be very capable all round, survival knives, hence the very hefty blade stock. I have most recently used a F1x for a while, and one of the must appreciated features is the blade stock, for batoning. I don’t want to bring an axe, therefore I have bought Fällkniven models that cater to that need. From what you mention it seems like you have had a poor quality example. You mention that you have been very happy with your A1(1:43 minutes in). Then it seems weird you comment that Fällkniven specialise in “lemons”(0:48 minutes in).

Ha, just got a second s1x and has a dastardly grind gouge near where your grind mark is, but it's worse cuz it runs over to the edge, distorting the actual edge. I contacted Fallkniven and they said it met their factory qc specs and that I shouldn't want a knife that looks like it belongs in a glass cabinet, seriously! I simply wanted a knife with the most basic geometry correct, like flat sides with no grind gouges messing up the edge. They sarcastically messaged "sorry that our best knife does not meet your standards" and offered no recourse or exchange. Piss on them, I'll never buy another and will spread the good word about them! Both were so dull out of the box, they could barely cut copy paper longways.

Well, I think you simply had bad luck with this one. It seems this blade has a wrong heat treatment and other problems that ends up with what you complaining about. Why do you damn Fallkniven knives in general, only why received one bad one. Compare yours to all the other reviews and send it to Fallkniven to either get it fixed or replaced. If you are to lazy you should not complain this way. By the way, the rattle is the price to pay for a better performance in winter with snow and ice. The its a result of another feature. I understand you're pissed by this particular blade ... but hey you received it for free right? So why howl like an infant, sell it or change it. Or are we talking about a clickbait video? 😁
@stroppystuff641

This only explains the bad grind. All of the other issues are design flaws. A friend had a CoS Fallkniven which was chipping when chopping small sticks, Fallkniven told him this was gross misuse of the blade was it was designed for "precision cutting tasks" even though they clearly market the X series as "hard use". Fallkniven customer service is an absolute joke. The reason so many reviews are very positive online is because people are trying to justify their bad purchase because they just spent a lot of money on it and want to feel good about themselves. Additionally people like yourself will leave negative comments on the reviews because they're blinded by their own opinion rather than the facts laid out before them.
@taunushabitat9000
@taunushabitat9000 2 жыл бұрын
@@stroppystuff641 True, it just explains the bad grind. I wouldn't say "design flaws" as these are actually intentional features. Except for the guard, which is somehow too sharp when delivered. I'm with you, but you can change it yourself if the outlier in your knife's blade quality is worth it. Probably, and I've never heard or experienced it, if chipping would occur, sharpening once or twice should stop it. Well, blade designers must always be careful when making recommendations regarding usage. This is clearly a legal issue. For some more, for others less. And there are still too many people who actually, for whatever reason, totally abuse their knives. But I agree that European Fallkniven customer service is not US Esee customer service. On the other hand, there are also good experiences. "The reason so many reviews online are very positive is because people are trying to justify their bad buy because they just spent a lot of money on it and want to feel good." I really doubt this for at least 90% of professional or advanced users or KZbinrs. Otherwise they would name it just send their knives back. To be honest, I thought about that too, as one of my S1X blades came out unusually dull. But once sharpened, it performs very well as expected, so I'll keep it of course. Anyway I'm still undecided if I like the Pro series more, especially in cold conditions. (And that, by the way, is the climate for which all Fallkniven knives and their sheaths have been developed). "Also, people like you leave negative comments on the reviews because they are more blinded by their own opinion than by the facts presented in front of them." Well I've been collecting, using and comparing knives since I was a kid. So I've been dealing with it for a very, very long time. I have countless blades to compare and in the end Fallkniven is one of my top brands even though I know they are a bit overpriced. But that's the case with others too. Well, in the end the first F1, S1, A1 or A2 versions are cheaper and actually everything you need anyway.
