Hi there, Ex-Saffer now living in UK here, and really enjoyed your refreshingly different review style. Firstly, you vastly undersell Felix's involvement in the design of the Venture! Wow! He is a very modest person, and I can see so many of the things he brought to the design that shows his influence, especially the way he dealt with the feedback tsunami its launch triggered. It was a revelation, as was the response from Victorinox, who addressed the issues very well in next to no time! Well done that man! It's amazing the extent to which I agree with nearly all your comments about the knife! I have used many V'nox kitchen blades, from the little paring knives to the largest chef and butcher's knives, and have often wondered why they haven't ventured seriously into the fixed blade arena. Then they go and do this to me, when I'm passed the time where I could have enjoyed this knife more! Right, let's chat. The drill bit: here I disagree with you, as I think the ability to make holes is one of the most useful abilities when camping or living outdoors. It's not really practical to lug about a drill brace and bit set. I know it's not really a survival aspect, but it does open up opportunities for making life in the wild more enjoyable and even effortless. In fact I would also dispense with those sharpening stones and add 2-3 more spade bits of various sizes. [ My V'nox already has the reamer (about 6mm) so I'd add an 8mm, 10mm and maybe a 12mm bit, and store them in there. ] I recently viewed a KZbin video where the Venture was pitted against the Mora Garberg in a feathersticking comparison. The reviewer actually scored it above the Garberg, which really surprised me. Your comment about keeping the Scandi edge as intended reminded me of a comment made by Rob Evans (Wales) about sharpening Scandi edges, and that it is a difficult process, and not practical in the field! This was confirmed by several other KZbin reviewers. Also, as you point out, the V'nox blade is very easy to sharpen, in comparison to the Scandi edge. On your comment about survival type knives, I again agree. These need to be much more robust, and larger - my current knife is a Cold Steel Trail Master (San Mai III version), which I use to a surprising extent even in an urban environment. The Venture was hopelessly over-sold by their Marketing people, even prompting Felix to put it into a proper perspective! It is much more a bushcrafting knife and configured to do those things. V'nox have just decided to do it differently to the mainstream bushcrafting fraternity (ie the Scandi crows!). If initial sales levels are a good measure, they achieved their sales goals spectacularly! Thanks again for an interesting review. Cheers mate!

I believe you are having what's referred to as "The Millennial Experience." A half dozen random interests, striving to balance how much we all threw ourselves into social media, and "grandparent" hobbies with a weird mix of exercise attempts thrown in for seasoning. Good times. I also appreciate the "do everything for a couple weeks" approach. That's been my approach with new pocket knives in recent years. Carry a knife, do everything that's anywhere near reasonable with it, and see how it goes. Usually means a bit less intense than some of your tasks, but cooking, backyard gardening and yardwork, household tasks and repairs, and the usual EDC type crap with packages, mail, and etc. Really a nice approach and means some guaranteed need to sharpen and touch things up.

Regarding sprouts - I'll try them with mushrooms, once the sprouts are in season here, ta. Sounds awesome, there will be no internet or mobiles etc. Just getting back to nature and basics ... we also have to cut off all communication with family etc but that's just to detox from 'society expectations' and relearn how the the 'family' gets connected to nature. The family also encourages reading, our dear leader has written a book which we must study & recite every night. I won't be able to let you know how it goes since there will be no internet.

Nice review! Since this looks more like the best utility/kitchen/camping knife Victorinox did, but not quite a survival knife, I am curious what would be the best survival knife from all knives you've seen and used? Gerber Strongarm is very tough but maybe it doesn't cut very well, Cold Steel SRK is tough but maybe not a good slicer, Buck 119 might be a good slicer but seems fragile. I am wondering what might be the best jack of all trades knife, decent toughness, decent cutting ability, easy to sharpen in the wild.

Pete, have you ever played around with sous-vide? I got into it about seven years ago, for a couple hundred bucks: Immersion Circulator, Vacuum Gun, Reusable Vacuum Bags, Picnic Cooler, Bulk Ping Pong Balls. The setup is great for red meat, particularly venison, as it is easy to get the internal temperature desired, without overcooking, and I can add herbs, butter, or other flavors to get away from that gaminess. It's been helpful to me in meal prepping a variety of different-flavored meals, freezing them, then letting the circulator handle the defrosting and cooking, browning in a pan or with a torch before serving. I can get a bunch of chicken, make each batch different, have a starch and some veg, and not get bored. Also, as an aside, you recently liked an instagram story that I made about my mom's passing, and I just wanted to say that those little acts mean a lot to an internet stranger who shares a hobby. I remembered showing my mom Dickhead Survival a few years ago, which led to occasionally sharing some of the pet-focused, or otherwise non-knifenerd videos.

i really think the venture is inbetween the garberg and kansbol. here in the states if you look at the msrp of the stainless garberg with polymer sheath on mora's website it's set at $103. the red venture on victorinox's website is $75. if you like the kansbol but wish it was full tang, tougher and had better edge retention, this is your knife! victorinox updated the sheath improving the guides and retention and sent me a new one when i reached out. didnt even ask for proof of purchase as it was a birthday gift. i put a ranger band on the end and slid my mora ''survival kit'' on it to make a super solid friction fit. it really takes a lot of force to get it off and now i have a diamond sharpener and fire steel to carry with it. i abosultely love this knife. i think it speaks to me the most and fits my purposes better than anything else in my collection. i can't say enough good things about it good on you for taking a break. things are even more crazy nowadays and we all feel it. whenever you choose to put out a video we'll be here

@@uncalm i know that but i was going by msrp set by the company edit: to compare what they value their product at. all of the reviewers are saying victorinox made the venture as a competitor to the garberg but i don't believe they would make a product and price it based on what something else goes on sale for from other dealers. i really think they were trying to do their own thing with the venture

@@KawikaLee408do you think the garberg is better than the venture or are they equivalent?
@KawikaLee4082 ай бұрын
@@piovtr8572 it's all preference my man. There's enough differences that it really comes down to your use case, especially if you're considering the carbon garberg vs the stainless venture. like others will tell you if you want a bushcraft knife that's bomb proof enough that it can get into ''survival knife'' territory then the garberg is your knife. the scandi grind on the garberg is good for wood processing but not much else, though you can make it work. The venture is much more slicey, less durable and better for wet conditions and has a much more versatile grind for things like food prep. the garberg has a lot more belly at the tip which i'm not a fan of, but could be useful for things like skinning larger game. the venture has less belly and a much more pointy, centered tip which i really like for more fine, detailed work. the venture also has a more comfortable handle. thats just preference built through experience. i live in california where i cant do much bushcraft and wood processing. im a saltwater fisherman, so stainless is pretty much a must. im an avid cook and i raise chickens/meat rabbits that i need to process. for my use cases the venture is the ''better'' knife. if youve never used a scandi grind before then pick up a companion or basic for like 10-20 bucks and see how you like it

G'day Pete, with ya, not something I'd carry out in the sticks, but around the house ideal. Mind you, so is a Mora Pro S for about 1/5 the price. Yeah bitta sheath fluff going on there and if one actually has a need for a spade bit, I'd suggest stepping down to around a 10-13 mm, (3/8 to 1/2 in.), job. All in all, not bad, though I wouldn't be pay'n 150 odd knicker AUD for it. I reckon 80-90 with a basic sheath would be more compelling. Perhaps Felix ......... is tak'n a cut ; ) Anyway, very well reviewed mate and best o' luck with the health regimen. Cheers Duke. P.S. btw you can have roo meat on your own, ...... once was enough for me ; ) I must be one of the few that actually like the taste of brussels, rather than halve 'em, I do the ol' cross cut in the base to cook 'em through. To lift the flavor lean-er/trimmed "short" bacon bits are hard to beat. Also, as with aubergine and zucchini, a "bit" of char, or al least a fair ol' browning, works well too. And, not forgetting the array of herbs and spices to tart things up. Just to round it off, I reckon, FPS, (farty pants syndrome), from brussels, beans and such, only comes into play when the meal is like 70-90 % of those ingredients ; )
