I've worked a lot of grants in the affordable homeownership field. The best course of action is typically to apply for grants to support work that you're already doing. That way, if you're already in business and somewhat stable, it's a boost to your work but not something that will kill you if you don't get it in the next round.
@FarmerCee4 жыл бұрын
Some of my first successful proposals were emergency and transitional housing and CDBG block grants for affordable housing. Remember that world well. For affordable housing and more social service- oriented grants, that is certainly a strong course of action. In farming, the government tends to support capacity building to increase production and profit. The funding opps tend to be more focused on infrastructure or innovation. So while you may grow excellent tomatoes, grants such as VAPG, may encourage you to think more entrepreneurially to perhaps create a line of tomato sauces which may entail stepping out of the box of what you already do well.
@GDMiller4194 жыл бұрын
@@FarmerCee that makes sense! I think the through-line is having some kind of base set up before reaching out for gov't grants. You're unlikely to go from zero to tomato sauce, but you could start by growing your tomatoes.

Here from Deva Jones. There are even the grants for the small things also, like rotating your livestock through pasture and I just love seeing people get the high tunnel grants. Let's say I have a farm where I produce different kinds of vegetables. I need a barn to be able to make into a production facility. I apply for a grant to purchase a barn for this production facility. What if I can't wait to see if I get the grant or not? If I take a commercial loan for the barn and start building it and suppose that I am granted the grant but the money arrives halfway through building the barn. Can I still use the grant to pay back the loan, or is that Grant null and void if it was restricted for that purpose?
@FarmerCee2 жыл бұрын
You typically cannot use a grant to pay back a loan unless you specifically request a grant to pay back a loan. Most grants are not retroactive. And grants for construction or capital grants are hard to find. You would need to structure it as a capacity building grant or tie it into the activities that will take place in the barn instead of the actual barn itself.

I liked the information in this video. I have a question? What are the initial legal paper I need to know and apply through my county. I just purchase my farm land and I can use some information about the initial legal paper work I need to fill with the county or the state before I began work on the land. Thanks for the information you are providing.
@FarmerCee3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest you contact your local agricultural extension agent and ask them for the specifics for your county as it can vary place to place. If the land is already zoned agricultural, I would think you can begin work as long as it isn’t anything that requires a permit of some sort. But your county’s agent should be able to give you a breakdown of who you need to connect with and why.

I have a few videos discussing registering your business with the state, IRS, USDA, and checking with city/county to see if you need a business license to operate as farm selling to customers. In some states in the U.S. marijuana is legal. Additionally, commercial level production is legal (with the proper licensing). These are state laws. Now, set next to that the fact that there exist many grants and loans to help beginning farmers succeed; but, recognize that many of those grants and loans are federally provided (federal). Now the fed still considers marijuana illegal (not legal) but the constitution - which is supposed to govern the country (fed, state, and whatever else there might be) - states that: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Therefore it could be argued that the fed has not power to regulate the legality of marijuana either way (which happens to be a very VERY lucrative crop in the states it is permitted). With all these things taken into consideration... could an entrepreneur successfully win federal grants and loans for the purpose of marijuana production (a pot farm)? Even if it were to be taken to court (sue the fed)? Even it it had to be won in the appeal? I suggest there are some precedence that must be set; and, if there is not already a precedent in favor of federal money for pot farms, it must be set.
