Difference between Avon & Marlo… Avon understood the game. Every level. In ways that Stringer never did. And he respected it. Marlo understood it too, but he had no respect for it or its players
@RodmanTackleAdvisor2 ай бұрын
Avon was legacy. In his bloodline for generations. He grew up being groomed for the crown. The game is like water to him. Life. Marlo was a self made man. Took a corner. Took the block. Goes independent and never negotiates until he gets the crown. Gets it, then goes about selling out to move up. The game is like money to Marlo. A tool to move up. In the end, Marlo ends up taking his corner back solo. He respects the game, but he also considers it beneath him. Avon's life is intrinsically tied to his street status. Marlo's is tied to his as well. Ironically, the real difference was legacy. Marlo got forgotten about. Everyone knows Avon.

@dadbodtee4987 I can watch this scene literally a hundred times in a row and still find a new detail every time. The all encompassing silence as Avon walks across the baseball diamond, his signature "gangsta strut", the way Wee-Bey and Cutty look up as Avon approaches them...all of that and more is what makes this scene literally perfect. Edit: I also literally JUST noticed that Avon is wearing a clean and seemingly new/non scuffed pair of Timbs as well as a stocking cap and if I'm not mistaken, a chain around his neck whereas the other inmates are wearing shoddily and cheaply made government issued trainers.

IMO Wood Harris gave the best performance in the show, and in a show with THIS cast... that's really saying something. The thing about Avon, he didn't really have any character development. And I don't mean that as a bad thing at all, he's just a character who knew who he was, and what he was. In a way that's the defining characteristic that set him apart from Stringer; Stringer wanted more, and he paid the price. Avon, though, said it himself, 'I'm just a gangster I suppose'. And he paid a price too, as he ends up with a lengthy prison sentence. But at the end of the series, he's fundamentally the same person he was at the start - just a gangster. But what an amazing, powerful, charismatic, complex character he is.

Wood Harris did an impeccable job on this role. His name should be mentioned in the conversation more about great TV characters. Then again so many that are were in shows not as good as this. I say that to say this… many of those shows and characters don’t compare to the Wire, they were too mainstream and couldn’t get away with some of what the Wire could on Cable. Thus, the Wire didn’t have as much exposure but had so much more than most any other show and we wouldn’t of had it had it been a network show. And I think Wood Harris knows he was great. If he doesn’t he should. Those mainstream shows on network appeal to an audience that wasn’t ready for the masterpiece the Wire is. Sometimes the best are diamonds in the rough. The Wire was special because it didn’t have the following of a network show at first. But those that knew, knew. You ask people and they say they’ve never seen it. Imagine if we had no Wire, which we almost didn’t considering HBO almost cancelled it after every season. Maybe he wins and award on another network on regular TV but then again we wouldn’t of had this opus.

The Wire is the best tv show ever written. It covers so much and shows all the aspects of everyone involved in the hussle of drug dealing from the supplers, dealers, customers, police, media, right through to the politicians. I really enjoyed Breaking Bad but The Wire is next level. Excellent writing and acting

29:00 Just noticed he is the same Barksdale soldier that opened the door in S1 for the raid of the Barksdale and in s3 1:31:03 claimed all them guns. He was present for both Avons downfall. Small details that make all the pieces matter

Mhmmmm....the way he was checking her out in front of D'Angelo, just scandalous and no shame... XD

I’m surprised Avon didn’t check Stringer. If I was D I would’ve told Donnette “Don’t be lettin that nigga twirl you around. U ain’t no ballerina” 😂

Stringer never really liked D'Angelo I believe he only tolerated him because of Avon's love for him. He never thought D'Angelo was good enough for the game or Donnette

I like to imagine that a season of "The Wire" set twenty years after the original show ended, where we see the original (surviving) movers and shakers of Baltimore in the old days and how they've adapted. I like to imagine an older, seasoned Avon who comes out of the Cut to find that the game isn't in him anymore, like it wasn't with Cutty when he got out. His name still rings out, but it's not what he wants anymore. He had his time with the crown, he did well in prison to build a nest egg, but now that he's out he finds himself advancing more towards community work like Cutty and, eventually, The Deacon (who was played by the real-life Avon Barksdale inspiration).
