The problem with this advice is that once your downroad gets bellow 6-8 inches then you start loosing a significant amount of performance of your ceiling fan. This is because a ceiling fan works by moving air from above the blades downwards, so you need some space above the blades.

You could make a downrod really long by combining downrods together with couplers.

Arlington Virginia houses must have a flush mount fan because some Arlington Virginia houses have ceilings below 8 feet.

I’m wondering the same currently.. haven’t installed the blades yet and wondering if it’s normal that it pivots so much. Did you ever figure this out?

Who knew there was actually a formula for the downrod length?!! Not me!! My fan came with the standard 4" (approx) downrod, but my ceilings are low. It would actually be better flush mount. Would I be able to simply remove the downrod at this point?

If you put a flush mount ceiling fan on a 14 foot ceiling, your not going to get any air, I think the fan is too far away from the ground, that's what I think though

My slab height is 12ft and fall ceiling is 18inch i need to keep more 1ft under the fall ceiling. My question is whether my fan will function steadily with 2.5ft rod or it will wobble as there is no support inbetween to the rod??

If a ceiling is 12 feet, and the downrod is 24 inches, the height off the floor would be 10 feet, not 9 feet as the graphic illustrates.

I think this is just not right. I am 6' tall. My reach is to 8'. Code or not, I should not be able to touch the fan blades, in my opinion.
