Excellent job on this fix. Back when I started replacing ceiling fans in the house, the previous owner installed the fans secured to the electrical box with one 8-32 bolt and a wood screw.

Bringing an older home to code is a never ending source of surprises. Nice job on that one. Tho I must say, if I had to choose "electrical thru a hole without a box" or "mounted to a box not sturdy for a fan" I would pick the electrical problem. A friend had a ceiling fan fall down and hang by the wire. It had originally been installed in an "old work" box just hanging on the sheet rock by the ears.

True. I find surprises all the time. So many people should not be working on homes. The fan was definitely secure when it was done improperly. Thanks for watching!

Great job, not trying to nit pick, just one small note, the plastic pop in goes in from the top of the box , not the inside. it prevents the Romex from being pulled into the attic, not the ground screw. Plus in the future, if the fan were changed out, you could easily pull more wire down if you needed more slack
@electronicsNmore

Depends on the situation when I install those plastic Romex clamps. In this case I chose to do it as shown because no one will be in the attic pulling upward to pull the wire out of the box, by installing it as I did, you also have more room inside the shallow box. You won't have the whole extended part of the plastic bushing sticking down into the pancake box making it more difficult for you to tuck the wires into position. The ground screw does excellent job of preventing the cable from being pulled upward into the attic, and the clamp when installed as shown prevents people from pulling more wire down into the room especially when there's no staple located within 6 in of that box. All comes down to preference. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@electronicsNmore I can tell you definitely know a lot about the code. But the code requires the staple within 12" of the box for NM cable "Romex" and allows for 18" of slack between the staple and box, and 6" of wire min to work inside the box. I'm guessing that the allowable slack is to be able to pull more in if needed, but it doesn't say why.

Excellent presentation. I ant to put one in my garage ceiling. there is a receptacle giving power to the garage door motor. Can I use that receptacle wire to wire the fan? I would probable have to do your exact installation mrthod. Can I proceed? Thank you.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 27 күн бұрын
@@mostrogolf22 To my knowledge a garage door opener does not require a dedicated electrical receptacle. Ceiling fans draw very little power, usually 100w or less, so I see no issue with tapping into a garage door opener electrical receptacle

I always do it the hard way- attach the box to the beam or truss with a cross brace up in the ceiling. Have found ceiling fans attached to drywall with molly bolts! The ones in my home were old Hunters and were attached to a steel frame up in the ceiling!

So my house is very old, it has real hardwood in the attic.. I wanted to add a ceiling fan to my sons room ( most rooms I was able to do this job no issue) but his has no box at all ( one of those ugly boob lights ) on the ceiling. The hardwood surrounds only wires without a box. I have a keyhole saw but how do I do this job? Should I try to cut through the wood that's super hard? Or the other option which is a no no to just wire the small fan up there and screw it into the wood?
@trench01

I specifically wanted to see how you wire it since the colors at times are different. I see white black and blue and put the blue with the white? Since I remember I did not put them together due to short but I assume that home was just strange.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 2 жыл бұрын
The black wire of the Romex typically goes to the fan motor the blue wire of the fan light kit typically goes to the red. It can also be the other way around. White to white.

I guess you didn't have a stud finder with you (not including your wife 🤣). I've always hated installing a ceiling fan. I usually have to balance the blades and set the all the blade angles the same to prevent wobbling and vibration. Plus the awkward angles of everything being on the ceiling and the fan's weight, working by myself. Cool tricks here. Great video. Thanks

I have one, I just prefer to drill a tiny hole instead since I'll be cutting the area out.
@illestofdemall13
@illestofdemall13 2 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore Yeah, you need the drill no matter what for the installation of the box, and there's already a hole there. Might as well do a quick exploratory probe. Sometimes stud finders are hit or miss anyways.

I put the clamp on the back side of the box so no one can pull the cable out from the attic.

That's one of the issues of these plastic strain reliefs-- they only provide one direction of resistance. IMO no plastic should ever be involved in any part of the ceiling fan support system. I prefer the old-school metal screw it all down tight strain relief/clamp. Attic temperatures can get way hot. Plastics just won't last.
