Tracy Morgan left the show after season 28 (he did cameo a few times in season 29, but he wasn't a cast member anymore). Kenan Thompson was hired on season 29 (and probably was hired because Tracy Morgan left. In fact, Morgan leaving and Dean Edwards quitting was what led SNL to hire Kenan Thompson and Finesse Mitchell [the latter of whom only lasted until season 31 and, no, isn't related to Kel Mitchell, who got passed up for SNL in favor of Kenan Thompson]).
