Sandra Bullock has actually both US and German citizenship. Her mother was German and she lived in Germany in her childhood. She was raised in Nürnberg, and that is also why she speaks with a slight franconian dialect.

Yes, her pronunciation is very good, but she did make one mistake that makes it clear her native language is English (can also happen to native German speakers who have lived in an English-speaking country for a while). She wanted to say that her speech (ie, the words that she had written to say on the podium) was lying there on the floor, but she actually said "my language is lying on the floor there". But it makes sense if you speak English, because "sprechen" is speak and "Sprache" is the noun form from that verb...but it doesn't mean "speech" in German, as it does in English, but rather "language."
@rosawolke2788

@@RKB74 I thought that was intentional because she wanted to express that she did not speak the language for a very long time. In this case saying "my language is lying on the floor" may be a bit nonstandard but shows that she really knows german

Yeah, but you can hear he didn't speak Italian for a long time, you know, you can hear he was thinking in English translating in Italian, he had a good vocabulary, a good pronunciation and a good accent, but the construction of sentences is simply not Italian. For example he said "fare ispirazione per loro" but it should be "essere d'ispirazione per gli altri", he said "è molto importante fare le cose che sono più grandi di te stesso" that basically means nothing in Italian etc. this happens because he speak in English, with Italian words, but in English.

Swedes are also very forgiving and happy when you try to speak Swedish, but almost all Swedes switch to English if we hear you are trying, cause is the core of Swedish culture not to embarrass anyone, basically all of our behaviors stem from that core value. We don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. So foreginers usually have trouble practicing Swedish as so many Swedes switch over to English right away in consideration. If you want to speak Swedish to a Swede you have to tell them to please speak Swedish back so you can practice, otherwise they will just switch to Eng.

I don't think you should see this as criticism, it is just an observation, that's what was asked of her here. And in general, if a french person corrects you when you practice, don't see it as a critic either, most (I cannot speak for all the french assholes) french people would do that to help you learn the proper french, not to pull you down but just because we know how hard it is and that's also what we would do for children learning.

So true about speaking with others, because you may know how to say something but if you don’t understand the other party, you may not be able to respond properly. If you don’t speak with others, you may only understand the most proper form of a reply to your phrase, which is hard to find outside of language learning software since most people use colloquialisms , slangs, and shortcuts.

Chalamet speaks a really good French. The accent is not perfectly on point, tho, and I think French people care more about that than in most other countries for historical reasons (Jacobinism).
@hugokana6425

For Timothée Chalamet, he is Franco-American. His father is French, but they lived in New York. He has that kind of French like Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, who are both Francophones but have lived among Anglophones, so there is a slight difference between their French and that of Francophones who have lived in a Francophone country/region. For Emma Watson, it's the opposite; her parents are British, but they lived in Paris, where she was born.

David Lee Roth can also speak fluent Spanish. 4:34 Not entirely true but somewhat, standard german is based on mostly middle german (and high german aka even further south) dialects, it was made to have a common language when the printing press was invented and the bible got translated. In North Germany we have low german which is a different language with the same root as high german, if people spoke low german, most germans wouldn't understand it so in the north people started to just use standard german unless its grandparents or parents at home (it is mutually intelligible with old english as that also has the same root, so people often say low german is somewhere between dutch and english). We basically have less of a dialect because we had to completely change to a different language (that being the middle german-based standard german) rather than changing a few words. And even then you can clearly hear when someone is from close to the north sea or baltic coast because they do speak with a bit of a dialect. The least dialect and most "standard" standard german is spoken in Hannover which is further to the middle of the country. Actually if i take my grandparents as an example, who spoke mainly low german, their standard german has more of an accent rather than a dialect, which makes sense. They sounded a lot more natural when speaking low german.
@olafgogmo5426
@olafgogmo5426 2 ай бұрын
No, standard german is based on middle german, especialy on "sächsische Kanzleisprache" witch was used by Martin Luther. And Hannover is definitely in Northern Germany. In the 19th century people in Hannover still spoke low german.
@TheSteakLP
@TheSteakLP 2 ай бұрын
@@olafgogmo5426 yea which is why i said further to the middle of the country and not "in central germany" people also still spoke low german in hannover in the 20th century, nowadays its just the older generations like anywhere in north germany, but you can't really tell an accent like with people closer to the coast like in Schwerin, Kiel, Hamburg, Bremen or Oldenburg. The "sächsische Kanzleisprache" wasn't just middle german but a mix of middle german and high german and was used for interregional communication rather than regional. But yes, I should've said middle german rather than high german as it was mostly middle german.

The problem of Standard German that persists to this day was a mistake, they were right to include Middle and Low German, but they made a big mistake when they excluded Northern Low German, so they ended up creating an unnecessary diglossia and isoglossia and there are dialects being suppressed from In a crazy way, the story would have been much better if Low German had been part of standard German now.

I am native Spanish and speak quite fluent (but accented) English and German and basic Italian... Most of the people that sound native are born or brought up as pure bilinguals (my kids are so, they speak my three main languages as natives, with dialect accent). Gwyneth was in a small city in Toledo called Talavera de la Reina for 6 months or one year and you can hear very good Spanish but a bit rusty. It happens to me when I do not practice with natives for a while. And Will Smith Spanish was better than Chris German in my opinion. If you want to speak another language, practice, practice, practice. Forget the shyness, do it half wrong. It gets better through the way.
