ive been there in february 2013 when i worked in NY. we were talking to each other in hungarian discussing the menu when an old hassid jewish guy offered his help in authentic hungarian to translate for us to English. i thought why not to test his abilities, pls translate Rigó Jancsi (name of a cake). oh he said thats the same, Rigó Jancsi! meaning Johnny the Blackbird :) we had some rétes and krémes, was marvellous. God bless you there.

My friends and I have been eating at the Hungarian Pastry Shop for more than 40 years. It's not just an institution, their coffee and pastries are delicious, and the atmosphere is homey. It's a gem!

I LOVE the Hungarian Pastry Shop. I featured the Hungarian Pastry Shop in my book, No Peacocks! A Feathered Tale of Three Mischievous Foodies. One of these days I need to drop off a copy of the book for the owner. p.s. I miss the peacock cookies they used to make.

What are peacock cookies? I am half Hungarian and I have never heard of them.

@juliettailor1616 They were like sugar cookies (if I recall correctly) shaped like the peacocks.

@@robinnewman6599 interesting. Never seen or heard of them. Peacocks used to be a common feature on Hungarian farms though.

Globalist corporate “Hungarian”. Zero authenticity.

@@treylol760 I expect a video on a Hungarian Pastry Shop to say why the hell it's called a Hungarian Pastry Shop. They could have said a few words about the founders...

Actually no. Germans like to claim it just like Austria. The origin is not clear but most likely based on baklava came to the area during the Ottoman occupation in the 1500s. Serbia and Hungary has more base on claiming strudel than either Austria or Germany.
