Hi Brett I love your videos ! I am Latin and I lived in Spain, I know our cultures touch more and kiss more but not in inappropriate ways, we hug and we kiss on the face if we are happy celebrating something but we don’t kiss on the mouth in that way to someone you probably don’t know… maybe in a party drunk and happy you kiss your friends but it’s people you know and it’s always consensual, it’s really inappropriate what he did, and also he has been doing inappropriate things for long time so this bad behaviour is not new… I think he destroyed to himself his career, no one else ! If he would’ve known how to behave nothing of this would’ve happened, We don’t have to blame others for our actions! Our actions bring consequences and he has to learn to deal with that !

It seems motivated and ironically cultural supremacist. It was a passing moment and I think the dude kissed other men - admittedly not on the lips. Send him to a seminar (or a dozen) quietly and put the focus on the women's team. If you've travelled, you're aware that other places don't have the same level of boundaries . You could argue that being touchy enables taking advantage, but that's probably more nuanced. I watched a couple moments of soccer the other day. The european players were being more physically friendly with the referees than I've been with anyone in my life. And as a sports fan, I'm aware that many teams seem to pat each other's butts. So there's a conversation about etiquette varying on environment and intent - but where most people accept in principle that boundaries aren't fixed. If we apply standard rules here, then any women soccer players who touched each other in the course of celebrating would also have to attend seminars.

You forget that there is a human being behind this that was probably very exited and overwhelmed by the moment to stop and think about what just happened. She said she didn't like it and that's enough, she doesn't need to lay on the ground and cry loudly. I actually think it's good she didn't let this incident ruin her mood. I wonder how Brett would feel about her boss or a stranger kissing her like that. I HOPE that people who watch this video are decent human beings that were taught manners, enough to not take this video to the wrong place and know that if Brett thinks it's ok, doesn't mean the rest of us think this way.

Dear Brett, I normally agree with your point of view on many things, but not on this occasion. What this dude did was in the heat of the moment, but it was wrong. He should have apologized immediately, but instead, he handled the situation horribly and now he's in a deep hole. Being Mexican, with many ties to Spain, I can assure you that you don't go kissing anybody on the mouth other than your spouse; cheeks are perfectly OK, even with people you've just met. (In fact, I've always been uncomfortable about the fact that in the US and Canada, some family members kiss each other on the mouth. I know this because I've lived in Canada for almost 3 decades.) The fact that he's the boss adds a level of inappropriateness to the situation. What do you think?

You are missing lots of things that make this way worse. 1. Kissing in the mouth is not a common way of celebrating in Spanish soccer. 2. He is her boss. He can really affect her career, so he has lots of power over her. It is not acceptable in any circumstance a boss kiss a subordinate, it is a power play. 3. The federation released a statement where they quoted a statement from Hermoso where she said that it was not a bid deal. The problem is that the federation made up Hermoso’s statement. 4. Rubuales and Vilda (coach) pressure her and her family to appear in a apologist video with Rubiales. She didn’t appear in it. 5. That video is everything but an apology. 6. He grabbed his crotch to celebrate the victory in next to the queen, the infanta, and England and Australia authorities. 7. He has had lot of problems in the federation (ex. using federation’s money to do an orgy) and this is just the straw that broke the camel’s back. I can go on but I have to sleep. The thing is that you missed the context of what is happening. I don't know Bret, I usually agree with you but I think you're wrong on this one. I'm European and I agree that kiss on the cheek is completely normal thing, but kiss on the lips is reserved for people in an intimate relationship, but it's not unusual to be seen with very close girlfriends or parents and smaller kids. You don't go around and kiss everybody you know on the lips. Now, what makes it even more complicated is the fact that he's basically her superior, and from my point of view I wouldn't like to be kissed on the lips by my superior I'm in no way, shape or form attracted to, just because we won a major contract or something. I would probably be grossed out and I probably wouldn't have time to react as it happened very quickly, so there was really no time to process it + the excitement of getting the deal done is still on, but I would certainly look at it differently once the emotions die down. In addition, I sure wouldn't like this to happen to women in a work environment as how can you keep working with that person wondering what's next, as if he could kiss you in front of everybody, what will happen if you end up alone in the room? I mean, how would you feel in that case? I agree with one thing though, I wouldn't call this an assault, as to make this equal with an actual rape would be crazy, but the only way this would be appropriate is if they were in some kind of a secret relationship and he got carried away... It's sad their win will take a step back so this thing can be all over the media.

I typically agree with Brett’s takes but there is some empathy missing here. Winning the World Cup was huge for the whole team and emotions were running wild for everyone (as the unexpected kiss shows). The player who was kissed was high on those emotions when the kiss happened, it also happened so fast that she had no time to process this. The video of her laughing about the kiss was still not long after this very emotional moment so she hadn’t come down from that yet. When her emotions were finally stable and she was able to process the whole thing she realized that in that moment she did she did not feel comfortable and that it was wrong. It was not assault but it was inappropriate. Rubiales is in a position of power over the players which makes breaking their personal space and boundaries even worse than they normally already are. Also, us here in the states do not know too much about specific people in Spain. Many Spaniards have an issue with this guy because he has shown through multiple actions that he’s a disgusting man who has abused his position of power. Inappropriately kissing someone added more to the fire. I didn’t do that much research but I know at least this much. The only thing why this Spanish presidente is in trouble is because the women have turned extremely toxic lately. Always assume they will be out to get you. Don't let your emotions cloud any of your judgment. If he kissed Sergio Ramos on the lips it would be funny moment, Ramos, who is not gay, would not even mind and the whole thing would just be one insanely memorable night, untarnished with anything. Here we have a woman who is ready to throw one of their own under the buss, to ruin this great memory for him, who, like it or not, was heavily involved in development process of the Spanish female football. This also ruins it for his family and all his friends. These people won't remember this as the victory but as a very bad event that was unfair to them. Just because you're European doesn't make you Spaniard, cultures vary extremely widely in Europe and Spain is quite different from the rest of Europe especially. No, he should apologize- but is it an issue like you're making it? Fuck no, it's a minor issue and it's worth an apology at best. We're talking about the KISS, not any of that other shit that you're trying to lump it in with, they are not the same thing and we are not talking about all of that. If someone was raped, or shown things they didn’t want shown to them or if someone was kissed without there consent that’s sexual trauma. Saying it’s an insult to other people who have been sexually assaulted is telling victims who that has happened to that their story doesn’t matter because it’s not as bad and that’s no true. Every story matters and we don’t compare because hurt is hurt. I have many participants who have left the program I run that joke about what happened to them or laugh because they don’t know how to cope. They don’t know how to react so they try to laugh it off to dull the embarrassment or pain it may have caused them. Was she violently assaulted no but it was still an unwanted kiss on the mouth. I don’t care if it’s what people do in Spain it’s inappropriate and if someone Spanish or not went to kiss me on the mouth without my permission to “celebrate” they’re are going to hit. Give a high five, a hug but you don’t kiss people who don’t want to be kissed by you. And before people come for me, I’m a conservative with conservative Christian values. First off you don't need to have immediate trauma or distress in order for a sexual assault case to be valid. Also, I'm just gonna debunk the "it's a European thing" claim. Yes, it is considered normal to kiss from man to man, woman to woman, or man to woman, but that only pertains to kissing on the CHEEK, as Brett stated in the comment she posted at 13:20. As an Albanian myself that is something we also do in our culture, but it is considered rude and excessive to kiss someone from lip to lip, especially if it's non-consensual. I'm sure the Spanish can relate to this taboo as well.

I appreciate this perspective, and I am trying to keep it in mind as I say that it is also difficult to understand what it is like to be the over-stepper, and to watch your career flashing before your eyes, if you never overstepped a boundary unintentionally with someone this much in your life before. Since men are statistically going to be the ones doing the over-stepping --- since they are socially expected to do more of the chasing and the bravado --- they are disproportionately the ones who have gone through this. So this could very much be a horrible experience for two decent human beings, we don't have perfect knowledge. If your boss kisses you without your approval, it's a firable offense. Why would this case be any different? She might not have been crying directly after it happened, given that they had just won something so meaningful, she would have had a lot of emotions to process at that time. I think that it is totally fair for her to feel differently after having some time to reflect on it. I don't know if we should or shouldn't call it sexual assault but it doesn't need to be assault to be unacceptable.

I'm sorry but this is Brett's lamest take ever. Within seconds she said Hermano instead of Hermoso in the intro to then completely jump in out of context to analyze what assault is or not. But this doesn't end here, because the definitions were changed and sentences to criminals were modified to fit this new designations, old crimes can be appealed, more than 900 segs offenders will be benefited by this, 100 are already FREE and some are committing crimes again. www.elmundo.es/espana/2023/04/12/6436a4adfc6c83366b8b45b2.html

Despite this, at the time I was frozen and uncomfortable, and only spoke about it after 6 months of anxiety attacks whenever the thought of being with a guy crossed my mind. I felt so consumed by this experience and so miserable, but still hesitated to label it out of fear of diminishing other’s experience. If I were in the situation of the player, I would be hesitant to use a term that is unfortunately a huge and detrimental part of many women’s and men’s lives experiences. OK. I totally disagree Brett. A coach, passionately, kissing a young woman, and he coaches is predatory. I have been someone who has been sexually assaulted and been through an incredible amount of trauma. When I am uncomfortable/and or after something traumatic or shocking or appalling, happens my knee-jerk reaction as a very shy and timid person but also as someone who is a peacekeeper, I freeze. I don’t get angry I get scared and when I get scared I shut down and laugh. I’m not laughing because I think it’s funny, I’m laughing because I’m mortified or in shock. Just because you wouldn’t have reacted that way doesn’t mean that she wasn’t shocked or traumatized. If he kisses a girl half his age who he has power over in front of the whole stadium without her permission, what kind of creepy things do you think he would do in private? my theory is he’s made advances before and took this opportunity as an excuse. You can disagree with me, but as someone who’s experienced constant and severe abuse. All I have to say is everyone reacts to trauma differently, and there is no wrong way to react. There is fight, flight freeze. And there is no“” correct way to react to something that made you feel unsafe or violated.
