Yeah, Hong Kong lost a lot of it's old charms. Now, just like every other modern city, it looks bland and boring, with equally boring architecture. The mainland washing of Hong Kong pretty killed a lot of it's cultural heritage, and what made it distinct. I'm not saying moving with the times is a bad thing, but if it comes at the cost of what makes it unique, and you just have buildings that basically look like every other city in China, it doesn't feel special anymore. 90's Hong Kong was peak Hong Kong culture IMO, and it steadily got worse from there (especially the cinema, it sucks now).

It's actually not like every other modern city... Korea, Singapore rose from the ashes and Japan has always been #1 destination for travellers around the world.. consistently.... and that's just Asia.. Hong Kongers whine but don't innovate or set up special heritage districts to preserve their culture ... this is a criticism out of love.. it's sad my daughter won't see the Hong Kong I got to grow up in.. but it's not always China.. All the tutoring and children'not having a proper childhood did not produce children that innovate or have the fight of its previous generation... it's getting absorbed by China and it deserves it... if this was America some young entrepreneur would have recreated and repackaged those wontons as hand chopped and sold at Wholefoods for 5 times the price

China is forcing buildings to be taken down and redeveloped so they can keep the construction scams going. All the new buildings will be shoddy and unsafe. Hong Kong Island and the tip of the Kowloon peninsula were ceded in perpetuity to the British Crown after the 1st Opium War, but the decision was taken long ago to cede the whole colony back to China in 1997 as the Chine has made it clear they'd just take Kowloon and the Island if they weren't handed back. By the 4th quarter of this year, Country Garden will most likely be forced into bankruptcy like Evergrande. Construction workers in the real estate business make about 12% of the work force. Think of all the uneployment in China now in the construction industry. With so much oversupply, and no reason to build for the forseeable future and no reason to buy new propoerty, China will continue to shrink for the next decade. The price difference across the border is just too high when you can buy similar products/services with less than half the price in China, and countries like Japan is absolutely cheap now. Ultimately you can say it's because of the China-US decoupling, and foreign capital fleeing HK, it's a tragic situation, HK need to find another way. Forgive me if I am uninformed, but these businesses stay for decades and still did not bother to buy out the properties they were in? They rented that WHOLE TIME?

When I was a kid, the financial centers of Southeast Asia were Singapore and Hong Kong. During the period when both were under British rule, they held significant financial power and influence in the region. However, after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took control in mainland China, specifically in 1949, there were significant shifts in the economic landscape of the region. Singapore maintained and even strengthened its position as a financial center due to its strategic location, stable governance, and proactive economic policies. It became a hub for international trade, finance, and investment in Southeast Asia. Hong Kong, on the other hand, experienced changes after the handover to China in 1997. While initially, there were concerns about the impact on its status as a global financial center due to the "one country, two systems" framework, Hong Kong continued to thrive as a financial hub for many years. However, in recent years, political tensions and concerns about the erosion of its autonomy have raised questions about its future as an international financial center. While Singapore maintained and even strengthened its position as a financial center over the years, Hong Kong's status has faced more uncertainties due to political changes and tensions with mainland China.

If they take away the dai pi dongs they take away the reason alot of tourists want to visit! Why go to HK when it's no longer HK? It's becoming unrecognizable.. just another modern city

I was in HK recently. I still really like it. People move in and people move out all the time. It's not tragic. The main cause is the integration of Mainland. During the process, businesses have to adjust to adapt to the new environment. People do adapt and I'm sure HK will survive and be stronger in the long run. Add oil!

One reason could be hongkong food is skyhigh so expensive and even the locals opted to eat on the streets. And cant afford mid cllass dining...even we tourist eat in small side walk stores with food approx hkd 50...for us its still expensive...as our country we easily spend 1/3 of 50 to eat a decent meal

Only the Chinese government and communism could take the power house that was Hong Kong and destroy such vast economics in the shortest time in the history of mankind's industrialism.

I'm so sadden to see the city of my birth being so brutally modernized to the point that the charm and all the things that made Hong Kong a great, unique world city turn into nothing but more boring malls and condos.
