Celebrity Beyond Excursion - I Went to An ACTIVE VOLCANO in SICILY!

I visit Mount Etna - an active volcano in Sicily and the largest volcano in Europe - while sailing the Mediterranean onboard the brand new Celebrity Beyond.
Mount Etna had been erupting for a few weeks before my arrival. We only visited the lower crater, some 6,000 feet above sea level, but the views were stunning. After showing you one of the craters of Mount Etna I head down the mountain to a jewelry shop in Sicily before heading back to the port of Messina.
I visited Mount Etna via a cruise shore excursion from the brand new cruise ship Celebrity Beyond, the newest cruise ship of Celebrity Cruises. Celebrity Beyond had her inaugural sailing in April 2022, followed by an inaugural season in the Mediterranean. Celebrity Beyond is captained by Captain Kate McCue and will be repositioned via a transatlantic in October 2022. The Celebrity Beyond will then be home-ported in Fort Lauderdale, where the new Celebrity Beyond will sail cruises to the Caribbean.
This 9-day voyage on Celebrity Beyond visited Naples, Sicily, La Spezia, Santa Margherita, Nice, and Marseille.

I'm always in awe of the power of a volcano. For two years I lived across from Great Sitka, a volcano in the Aleutians. Great footage. Sicily for us on the Edge next May! I really don't care for the hard sell on a tour. Worst ever was Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Still, a tour to consider. Thanks!

I was with the Navy in the 80's and we were stopping in several ports in the Mediterranean and while in Naples and Sicily mount Etna erupted and ferries from Italy to mount Etna were canceled as they were being used to evacuate the people at the base of mount Etna.

When Mount St Helen's Erupted, I was stationed in Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington State...I also survived 3 major Typhoons while stationed in Tripler Army Medical Center Hawaii and survived After Being Deployed in Kuwait and Iraq.. so you can understand doing this would have no effect on me....lolol.

Is it possible to do private tours up the volcano, to avoid being held captive in the stores for half the time? And are there helicopter tours that can go further up?

You certainly could do private tours up to the top and, in hindsight, I wish that’s what I would’ve done. However, I’m not sure there would have been enough time since it takes so long to travel by car to the mountain from the port. Maybe on a stay on the island.

@@ZachtheTravelingMan at least on a private trip, you could have spent 2 1/2 hours on the volcano. I swear, some of those sponsored shops are really predatory. I got tricked into a Diamonds International in the Caribbean once, and they practically locked the doors to keep us inside! I'm afraid I had to get a bit rude, to back them off and gain my freedom 🤣

Zach, My dad was wounded on Mt. Etna in WWII. I am not sure he enjoyed it as much as you did.
