This was the first Celebrity Jeopardy! sketch without Norm Macdonald, and Darrell Hammond had been in the first three sketches as Sean Connery, Phil Donahue and John Travolta. It was decided to revive his Connery character and have him start trolling Will Ferrell's Alex Trebek, and the rest was history.

The Connery impression evolved over time. The mother jokes were added in later versions of the sketch.

I just found out that Norm MacDonald wrote most of these sketches. That makes them so much better IMO.
