I've always explained your channel to other people as "The grandpa I wish I had to teach me the things I'm learning now". Both of my grandpa's were gone by the time I was 4, so I only had my Dad and my step-dad. They did what they could, but raising kids isn't easy when you have your own issues. I have two boys now that are still very young, 6 mo and 2.5yrs. My goal is to give them the Grandpa experience I wish I had as a kid. When they are at the right age to experience those lessons, I will ensure they have the opportunities to do so.

I hope more people follow Buckin. He's so much like T.E.C., he's a bit distractable so his instruction can be a bit all-over-the-place TBH but his expertise and skill, is unrivaled as a production logger and general tree feller. Humble beginnings is an understatement. I wish all the success that comes his and his families way...His 'acts of kindness' precept also pretty darn important.

It's not just absent Dad's sadly. There are a lot who grew up with mean, hateful, belligerent dad's and they were taught that was what a man is. I grew up with a great father so I don't know for sure but it almost feels like the mean father is worse than no father. Not that it's a competition. So great of you to be teaching kindness. Thank you.

The first thing I noticed was, Billy Ray still has that old Mercury pickup. I thought he'd sold it. I have been using chain saws since the 1980s. But have never been brave enough to mess with the carburetor. Now I finally know the simple basics. (It did not come up that the demonstration saw is OLD, and a Homelite. So I take it that what he showed us is universal. Except for the new fuel injection saws... right?) I am impressed that he actually has room to work on his work bench. I like that Billy's wife was referred to as his Bride. My wife would not let me say that. Never knew why. Good advice about finding your way in life, and doing well. The Bible says in Proverbs that your most valuable possession is your REPUTATION. And this is how you build it.

My humble friend called himself an old saw-filer. Most of his business in later years was carbide sawteeth ground on a computer controlled all-in-one grinder. Before that though, his customers were often other blue-collar guys who complained about the price he charged. His reply was "Well, that's true alright, but I had to pay a plumber the other day and it don't look like my price can come down anytime soon" (of course plumbers could maybe afford a spiffy pro sharpening, but the warehouseman could hope for a discount.)

Thank you for that conversation at the end. As a kid, I was socialized as a girl, so I was never taught how to use tools or how things work, but now (at 28), I have a beard and pass as a guy. My dad was physically there, but not emotionally. I lived in fear of him my whole childhood, and I don’t think I’ve ever had an actual conversation with him. I just found my first chainsaw from a garage sale for free (string’s broken but I was told it works), so I’m trying to learn everything I can about chainsaws & how they work before I even go out and buy any oils or a new rope. I don’t know if I’ve ever been more excited (and scared) to learn a new skill, but I feel like I’m forging my own identity by learning how to do things like this.

Bought a new chainsaw today and I was thinking of the conversation at the end while breaking it in on some eucalyptus we lost in a storm earlier this year. Very important wisdom that I learned far too late into my adulthood. Some people would say I'm just getting started, but if I'd applied "You are your problem" sooner, I'd be a lot further along instead of still feeling like a failure to launch at 34 and clawing my way forward with what little resources I have.

By modern standards, I should have every reason to be a wandering, career criminal. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference - and I chose to take my father's absence as an opportunity. An opportunity to allow myself to take the best of the other men that God put in my life to fill the void left by my father. Every one of those lessons are being passed on to my children, because I refused to be absent for them. And yet, some of those learning come from the two men in this video. Many thanks, fellas! Keep up the good work.
