What a bunch of hypocrites see blk men when you have a preference they shame you when blk women date out it’s nothing know shame from other blk women. She doing slave plays with massa but shaming blk men. Shes A true colorist self hate is something. She wants light skin babies. Once you have a baby by white massa remember blk women the man carries the seeds determines the nationality of the baby her having a baby with massa she’s jus producing a white woman with a tan lol. Only way a blk woman can make a blk child is with a blk man. Skin tone doesn’t determine your nationality your farther does we call it sprem. There wasn't colorism in my house but I can't act like I wasn't aware of it or it never made it into my home. The adults in my house were not treating my light skinned sister better or even mentioning her light skin, but a lot of other people did. Adults felt no shame in calling my dark skinned cousin names. My mother never let them get away with it though, she wasn't afraid of taking these colorists on (even family) and even kicking them out of our space. So I knew from a young age what it was and that it was wrong, even if it wasn't practiced in my home. So this I didn't know is a LIE!

If she was really sorry, she would have let a woman who “ look like her mum” take the part. Instead, she decided to get ahead of the “ANOTHER biracial woman playing a Black woman damage control” and try to justify why ANYBODY can play a Black woman. If that’s the case, they should have just kept it a White man. She used her light skin and tears to get sympathy, just like a Karen. I met a LSBW at a neighborhood party hosted by a dark skinned couple. Now I really don't care about color, at the end of the day I like who like me. So turned out me and girly had a lot in common and chatted for a while and then she disappeared . That week on the subway to work I saw her and tried to engage in conversation to no avail. I figured maybe I got the name wrong lol wouldn't be the first time. So that weekend over brunch I mentioned it to my friends and nope the name was right. Irony of ironies I ran into her again walking into a building and now l was clear in greeting her and she looked right through me. So now I was done as I was taught never to beg for friends. Later on that summer I mentioned it at another neighborhood party to a neighbor, a Yoruba fella and he laughed and said it was my husband. I was like what? Turns out her beef was that I married a tall white man. The joke was that when I first started dating as a teenager all the dark brothers were interested in the sistas that looked like her so I gave up and dated who was left. Korean, Indian, Scottish whatever as long as they treated me right and we had a connection. I had one American cappuccino colored guy in college in Louisiana tell me he didn't date girls darker than him! Ms. I am black and I am proud had a lot to prove since her 23& Me test told her she was 72% white. So I guess the question if you decide to answer is who is "more black?" Me 100% of African ancestry of Senegalese, Ghanan and Nigerian or 72% white with beige skin but she does wear her hair in locks and goes by Tomeko while I have mid-back length relaxed hair and go by Sophia! That is a trick question because one of is is trying while the other is naturally a black queen! I have since decided to ignore her whenever I see her because you can't fix stupid or self-hate.
@artisticagi2 жыл бұрын
I think it might be two things: one, you triggered her insecurities not being black enough and two she doesn’t understand since black men always gravitated to her how your experience was very different than hers which led to your decision. She likely feels she had to overcompensate for her lack of melanin and African ancestry with all the stuff you mentioned, and probably feels a type of way that you don’t have to but had the audacity to erase it halfway by your marital partner. She knows if she chose a white man her kids would basically be white but yours will still have a tinge of their ancestry visible. It is sad and weird, but I would talk to her about it. If not to be friends, but just for education purposes. One day it might sink into her insecure head.

Another note a lot of light skin women who grew up in majority brown skin communities will talk about how they wished they were darker, how they always liked brown skin, how pretty it is, etc I’ve had several tell me so. I’m inclined to believe them. So she probably admired that about you and is taking it weirdly personally that you decided not to pass on that darkness to your kids (if you had/have any) And possibly put your kids through what she might have gone through by not being brown like everyone else. (I had a coworkers niece who was biracial who wanted to cut her hair because she was getting teased, so I do believe them when they say they get teased. It obviously doesn’t supercede colorism but empathy goes both ways)

I'm going to give you the real. And this has nothing to do with insecurities or hatred of XYZ. I don't have any white friends and I don't have any blk friends that are married to or date white people. I used to have many white friends and blk friends married to non-black people. Untill, I had one too many unpleasant interactions. The last straw was when I was sitting on my couch, in my own house, doing my daughter's hair, and my black friend's white spouse stated that they didn't think they wanted to have children with said black friend because they didn't want to have children with nappy hair or blk features. It was at that point realized I didn't owe anyone anything. Not even my friends. No matter how well we get along, I don't owe your spouse the opportunity to do some dumb shit around my children. Just because you love someone doesn't mean that we have to even like them. And, it doesn't mean that they behave the same way around others as they do around you. I don't allow colorists, antiblk folks of any stripe in my home. But ever since adopting that one strategy a good 90-95% of racial micro-aggressions have been eliminated from my life. I still have blk friends married to Asians and other people, but those communities usually have experience with colorism/racism first hand. It doesn't guarantee anything but I have yet for that to be an issue. That's my rule and if anyone doesn't like it they can kick rocks.

I just wanna say that the *only* time Thandie Newton has ever played a convincing and compelling role was in this audiobook that I listened to (Jane Eyre) in which she played several white ppl. As a Black girl she has always been static and lifeless, and maybe that’s because she is hyper confident about her prestige, beauty, and talent simply bc she is lightskinned. Darkskinned actresses really have to be top tier talents to even get an ounce of attention, but actresses like Thandie and Zoe are invited to the table and to play roles that they don’t understand simply for being the hegemonic image of “Black” beauty.

Though we broke God's Law, Jesus paid the fine by dying on the cross: "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (Jn. 3:16). Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. He fulfilled all the prophecies of the promised Savior. Africans have lived all up and down Central and South America since before they became independent nations. Most of the traditions in Latin America were stolen from the African culture. If you’d like to visit a country that is 75% Nigerian, learn a bit of Portuguese and check out Brazil.

lol had to pause to comment how years ago in university i became really good friends (for like a semester lol) with this extremely wealthy (went to a top boarding school and all) british nigerian girl who was an international student and our friendship ultimately ended because of what you mentioned. homegirl really tried to paint me as crazy, ignorant, and inferior for acknowleding race/racism/colorism (she was dark skin mind you) and classism and really tried to gaslight me into believing how it's only an american thing and none of what i would talk about existed in england/europe or nigeria. she deadass looked me in the eyes and told me skin bleaching isn't a thing in nigeria which i knew wasn't true...... it was really hurtful meeting a black person who pulled out literal KKK talking points about AA, she had a deep disdain for black americans that slowly but surely came out in the course of us knowing each other i'm surprised she was even interested in being "friends" with me looking back. hope she healed and learned for real lmao

I have to say, I am a Black woman of Haitian descent born and raised in the states, and although I can’t stand the crocodile tears, I think I may understand, to a very small degree, what Thandie might have meant when she said she was considered dark skin in the UK. I think, though Black exist in a multitude of shades across the world, in her own little world and chosen community, she may have very well been the darkest person, and therefore called “Dark”. I’ve seen this to be the case as well with black people who were raised around very fair skin people or white people, because their shade was the most pronounced in their immediate circle, they are called dark in those circles and internalize being dark as a negative thing. It’s a very deep issue where people’s perception of what is considered light and dark is so relative to their own experiences that it is also distorted in their minds, because as a Black woman, to me, Thandie Newton would not be considered dark on any scale, but she could be considered dark to her very white friends. I had the reverse experience as a child. I was raised in a mostly Caribbean community in Miami. Those in my neighborhood and in other circles were usually of the same or darker complexion than me, and while I never saw myself as high yellow or fair skin, I would often be referred to by my peers as a red bone or even dirty red (in the same way you hear dirty blonde). I am Black with a medium to dark brown complexion, but to some of my peers I was considered “red”. So the first time an Afro Latino man referred to me dark skin, in my early 20’s, I was confused; not, because I needed to hear red bone, but I didn’t understand how someone the same complexion as me, had referred to me as dark skin, as an identifier. It didn’t take me long to realize that culturally anything non-white or close in close proximity to white, is considered dark to many Latinos and really, most people who are lighter skin. So I say all of that to say, if you internalize how you are being perceived in this world, based on the perception of those around you, it would make sense how a light skin woman like Thandie Newton could have thought she was dark skin and then had a totally different experience once being in the US…especially if the treatment she encountered in the US was preferential in comparison to her experience in the UK. Let’s not forget, she has other factors in her corner as well, that adds to her unseen privilege: while she is a light skin black woman, she has lighter eye color, loose curl hair and an English accent, which is highly favored in the US, so her proximity white definitely affords her privilege that she chooses to continue to be blind to moreso here in the US, than in the UK.

I get that, I'm mixed with black, extremely pale, add to that English climate, I grew up in rural white land UK, my friend once said to me, "you're really black" 😂 I couldn't understand it, so sometimes mixed race people are the blackest thing a white person has seen. I was called the n word and the p word. When I have a deep tan, my race changes again. Africans see me as white, Europeans see me as black. I know I'm treated differently from fully black people, even within black people, there is colorism. The problem is I don't know what to do about it. I asked my black friend, should I decline every job offer? As how do I know there is someone else less privileged below me, not given the job? I'm not sure what to do. It has been a headfuck to be both but neither, to be pedestalled and predujiced simultaneously, but I've reconciled it now, as being authentic and honest, eg not pretending to have the same experience as all black people and being honest about their mistreatment, but also acceptance of my own internal identity, not needing validation from white people or black people.

"is your bullying systematic" couldn't have said it better myself. I would always try to find a way to word that exact statement, but could never. All I could come up with was, "okay, I understand that you had that experience, but it's not the same as institutionalized oppression that dark skin women (and men, but like we talking about the girlies) face" which, I mean like isn't a bad way to put it, but what you said is so much more concise and you get it like immediately.

Thank you for this video Mayowa! This is the first video I have watched of yours and I feel you perfectly encapsulate and articulate my feelings growing up as a dark skinned woman. I never had the words to fully articulate how I felt. It’s nice to know that I am not crazy. Your breakdown of the six steps perfectly outline why their ‘sincere’ apologies always felt flat to me. I’ve I often feel like light skinned woman like Zoe Saldana and Thanie Newton play victim and act like colorism don’t exist while fully aware that their desirability is the reason why they got in the door and extended these opportunities. Throw in the fact that they not from the U.S. and seen as ‘exotic’ or in plain language ‘not the average black girl’ only added to their differentiation appeal. As long as the checks cleared they were fine with snatching all the roles they could being the “token desirable Black girl” but when those checks dried up, now all they have is water works and hallow apologies. I can’t!

I think what’s missing from a lot of these mixed/light skinned women is will power at this point. Being aware of something and actually doing smtg abt it are two completely different things, and that’s what’s missing. They’re not actively putting in the work for themselves and the community they claim to care about, it’s all a performance.

I personally get most of the language to describe the different forms of discrimination- be it racism, sexism, colorism, etc- from African American women because you often have honest conversations around these issues and you give them the name/language. We often don't have such discussions for example in South Africa where I am from. So sometimes we go through discrimination 1) not knowing the language for it; 2) not having the tools to address it. I grew up being a huge fan of women like Mama Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and now Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie- why? because they gave me the language for some of my experiences.

Ok but Zoe Saldana saying she didn’t grow up with lighter and darker has to be untrue right? Correct me if I’m wrong but I have mad Dominican friends and they def have called darker people morenos or sum that means brown. It’s considered a term of endearment but like, girl you gotta be aware of the skin tone scale over there. Also we’ve all heard British people separate “mixed race looking girls” from dsb girls

Moreno to us Dominicans means tanned, and like you said, its not hateful at all. We also use it as a loving way to describe someone you love or care for who is tanned.🫶🏼 even the word “negra” (which would refer to someone brown or dark) which is usually used by some men, its in a loving or intimate way ❤

As a blue person, as ugandan called us 🤣😂(darkest humans on earth)from South Sudan 🇸🇸 I think colorism in black community is everywhere. in Kenya 🇰🇪 they called us charcoal , in uganda 🇺🇬 they tell us we are blue people that we are not black. Infact lightskinned people feel like they are superior than brown people and than the brown people feel like they are superior than dark-skinned people like me, in this case we are not in the conversation 😂🤣

17:34 some people are so quick to remove themselves or where they grew up/live from fault. colorism is everywhere. even in places where it isn't necessarily a black folks' issue, it is still very present. south/southeast asian countries experience it (India has it bad), latin american countries def experience it (whiter latinas--especially those with less body hair--have privilege over darker latinas--especially those with more body hair). even back in the day, colorism was a thing. royals wanted to be as light as possible because being darker signified being a peasant, being poor, being uneducated. stupid shit. always has been, always will be.

I don't think that she meant it as an apology... "I've desperately wanted to apologize"... not I want to apologize. She basically said that her wanting to apologize stemmed from the way she was treated. In her eyes she was treated so badly that she felt like she had to apologize all the time...but now she seems to realize that she herself was the victim afterall. She is crying over young Thandie. Forget about being black, MY life was way harder.

It's the intellectual dishonesty for me. Like, I don't get how these "victims of reverse colorism" don't feel stupid saying and doing these things in 2022. The Zoe Saldana incident was so embarrassing. Why repeat it? It's like when Tucker Carlson pretends he doesn't understand white supremacy. I don't know why so many people think acting dumb is the go-to solution. Like, when did it become okay to just be stupid in front of cameras for attention or whatever she thought she was going to get out of it? Why? I didn't even look at the rest of the Thandie video... As someone who watched a lot of her movies but didn't really know anything about her, I'm kinda just embarrassed for her. Like, leave the "Am I not black enough to replace you?" rhetoric to the younger people like Zazie and Doja and the girl who was Storm in X-Men... Thandie is a full grown 50 year old woman. Even if she believes what she's saying, she had to know saying it on camera was a bad idea. She's too old to just be acting an ass for attention.

Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. He fulfilled all the prophecies of the promised Savior. Please, today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will forgive you and grant you the gift of eternal life (Eph. 2:8,9). Then, to show your gratitude, read the Bible daily and obey it, join a Christian church, and be baptized. Visit NeedGod.com and LivingWaters.com 🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊

Thank you. They are not the same. Khoisan people and black albinos are light skinned and 100% black. Biracials are not the same as light skinned black people.
