A covenant of acclaimed directors (all male) and past winners of this category (almost all males) select the nominees every year. Those old school, white, stuck up males NEVER will nominate a musical, a Barbie movie, a superhero movie and such. That’s why the Director category and Best movie are almost always diverge

I agree, but technically, G(a)linda is a leading role also, not a supporting one. Both Chenoweth and Menzel were nominated for the leading actress Tony Award for playing the same roles.

Wicked was a masterpiece of daring filmmaking on most every level. Instead of a Mama Mia excuse for a trip to the Adriatic. Ariana was an extremely risky casting decision, but really worked and brought the necessary attention to this women-focused, musical (certain box-office poison). It was her acting ability that was the most surprising. Just compare with all the horrid casting of all those successful Broadway musicals made into movies during the 1960s, the only decade when such movies were common! Hello Dolly perhaps the worse waste of money ever on a musical. It took extremely low-budget Grease (off-Broadway hit) to get the bad taste of the 1960s out of our mouths (but then canceled out by the movie of HAIR). Cabaret was so sanitized, but Chicago movie a surprise (though Evita movie was reduced by singer Madonna's pedestrian acting). Fiddler became a precursor of Love, Actually crap, missing the soul of the musical.
