Lucia was special not only because of her beautiful voice, but also for her excellent technique, style, and acute intelligence. As you say, this aria can be a true snooze fest (I like it, though) if done superficially, but Lucia gives it sense and emotion. Her recording of the entire role with Solti is also testament to these qualities. High and above one of my favorite singers.

Heard her as Annchen in Der Freischutz, Gotz Friedrich´s stunning production (ROH,London) at a time when opera was worth paying for unlike now when I wouldn´t give most producers the time of day. Wonderful artist.

An anecdote that was shared with me: In a studio recording of this opera, when they went to do Sull’aria. Kiri Te Kanawa showed up dressed to the nines, adorned with all sorts of jewelry. Popp showed up wearing a Mickey Mouse T-shirt, now that’s MY kind of lady!

More than her beauty of voice the basic humanity and warmth in her singing seems to perfectly attuned to Mozart. The spirit in the music is directly reflected in her core sound like few others. I LOVE this aria and all of Susanna's music, nothing boring of it IMO and Susanna herself is certainly not bored. Her very real but also very sober love for Figaro is perfectly expressed, as is her strength of character and basic decency. The contrast between her music and the music for the Countess shows just how smart Mozart was in differentiating the two in terms of status and personality.

The first time I heard Lucia Popp was in the video version of Carmina burana, and I'll never forget it. She's so lovely in this aria. Nancy Storace who created the role was a great favorite of Mozart's.

This aria was an acquired taste for me and I have Ms. Popp to thank for that. I listened to dozens of college age sopranos butcher it during my studies and cast it aside as B-list Mozart. Like many I fell in love with the overture, then the act II trio, then the finale before giving this aria the attention it’s owed. For me, Lucia takes what feels like melodic simplicity and exposes that second layer of music that’s frankly just divine. It’s like it was composed for her. Thanks for posting so much Lucia! Always puts me in a brighter mood!

Thank you so much, LO. Many of we opera fans would be lost without your contributions. This is my favourite 20thC female voice. Not the vocal genius evident, perhaps, in a Callas or Sutherland, but this woman's art will live on forever, not least in her extensive recording legacy. It's just a shame that her recordings are skewed toward the 80s/early 90s, i.e. those relatively later years of her career.

This opera is probably the most vocally boring thing Mozart ever composed. Lucia is divine as always however. Everyone always mentions how beautiful her voice is but what about that low A? Her and Fleming have the best chest voices out of the straight sopranos.

Lucia Popp is the ONLY Vitellia on record who does not push / scratch her low register to achieve the low notes of Non piu di fiori.... Assoluta Soprano Lyric... and yes Le Nozze is boring as hell

@@LohengrinO Her Vitellia is exquisite. I would give that categorisation - Assoluta Soprano Lyric - to both Popp and Fleming. The only Vitellia? I rate Julia Varady and Marina Rebeka very highly in this role as well and don't recall any scratching of their lower registers in the aria. What is your opinion of their chest tones in that aria specifically?

Popp sounds truly natural down there... Yes Fleming too as Assoluta Lyric... and I consider Manon and Thais two of the best examples of Assoluta Lyric singing... Varady comes very close to Popp as Vitelia
