This is one of the best reviews I have seen and I have seen a lot, I just ordered the ED PRO after seeing this review it's on sale at the moment at a leading Uk store I had the 25x100,skymaster what a nightmare it had so much Chromatic aberration it was like a laser show all colours of the rainbow I've been collecting binoculars for years and they have the worse Chromatic aberration I have ever seen in either binoculars or Telescope I virtually gave it away, I'm looking forward to the skymaster ED pro

@@FocusKnob yeah I have been using it for a few weeks but due to the British weather hasn't been able to use it much and found you nailed it in your review,I found it very uncomfortable due to the size of the eye cups if you have a big nose (like me) you can't see the full view, it's a definite a step up on all those entry level 20x80 astro binoculars that has been the market for years but as you mentioned it lowers Chromatic aberration but it doesn't eliminate it is more like a well correct achromat rather than an ED, I have decided to keep it because of the price I paid in the sale £270.00 i won't use it much because it's too uncomfortable due to those oversized eye cups,oh by the way the collimation is perfect.

How did you come to the conclusion that they weren't collimated? I didn't see that in your video?

You can't exactly show a miscollimation on video. The right side view is substantially higher than the left side which made it hard to merge the views.

Very well made review. Nice colors and contrast looking through them. And sharp as well in the center. Too bad they weren't collimated correctly! Will you receive another pair? Or by some other cool binos?

It's permanently back to Celestron. May be if the price goes down I'll buy again. The bad collimation at the current price is unforgivable. I didn't want the trouble going back and forth at this point in time. I'll look to more affordable binoculars.

@FocusKnob9 ай бұрын
Get a tripod that can go at least 70" tall like a Bogen 3011, 3021, 3033, 3036, 3046, etc. Depends on how tall you are. My latest tripod acquisition is a Coman KX3636 which can go to 74" tall. Checkout my review of the Celestron SkyMaster Pro ED 20x80 binoculars to see that tripod in action.
@dedskin19 ай бұрын
Exit pupil of 4 mm is really small , if it was 6mm you would gat 2x more light , so 12x80 would be much better as far as collecting as much light as possible , or at least 15x80 , would give about 5.3 mm exit pupil , even that is double the light i think . Chromatic aberration would be less but i guess everyone can chose their own . From the specs these are Dusk , dawn binoculars , definitely not for ultra Astronomy. Or Dark . What 4.5inch telescope do you have , anyways great review , 10 out of 10 . I just didn't see collimation problem but i guess that is hard to show .

Really appreciate your video mate, good stuff 👍 What would you think in comparison for Astro observing on going down to the 15x70 pro ED for a gain of 0.7 focal but losing x5 magnification?
@FocusKnob9 ай бұрын
Dropping down to 70mm in aperture robs you of about 23% light gathering capability. On the other hand the 15x70 gives an exit pupil of 4.7mm compared to 4mm on the 20x80 binoculars. If everything was equal then a bigger exit pupil may give the appearance of a brighter image if your own eyes' pupil can at least match the 4.7mm exit pupil. I've read young eyes can open up to 8mm while older people not so much. You also frame more of the sky at once with a 15X.
@johnstark81169 ай бұрын
Thanks very much, I wasn't thinking that it could be as much as 23%... I'll do some research and see how much a x5 drop represents in magnification. Also what field of view is best usable in astro. It is also true I'm not getting any younger :) not saying price and weight could influence the final verdict. Appreciate your help there 👍
@FocusKnob9 ай бұрын
If you take an image and divided it into 20 sections. 15 sections would be what you would see with the 15x binoculars. There are two camps when it comes to binoculars and viewing the night sky. Some prefer the lower magnification as it allows you to see more of the sky at any moment. Others prefer a higher magnification to see things closer. When looking at the moon I prefer the higher magnification.

ED glass comes in many varieties and quality of correction. FPL53 being the best apart from fluorite which is very marginally better but I don't think it's used for binoculars only top end telescopes. When a manufacturer doesn't state what type of ED glass is used you can bet it's a lower quality glass.

Probably not top tier ED glass but a definite improvement to the non-ED Celestron.

@FocusKnob10 ай бұрын
8x25 is more than adequate for day viewing. Anything bigger in daylight your eyes will attenuate the extra light gathering of the bigger lens. Bigger lens is good when light is dim like when the sun is about to set and at night.

I wonder why they don’t make 25x80 in a pro model and a 34x80 would be awesome as well. If they made a 34x80 ED model, I would own it already.
@FocusKnob2 ай бұрын
Increasing the magnification without also increasing the aperture results in a dimmer view. In order to maintain the same brightness then the aperture needs to increase to 100mm for a 25x100. 34x80 would be so dim it probably will not be suitable for night use.

I purchased the Orion 20x80 ED binoculars five years ago. They look VERY similar to the Celestrons and I think the specs are nearly identical. They were $300 (again 5 years ago) I also had to send back my first pair due to poor collimation. The 2nd pair they sent me was good, however and I kept them. It sounds like your expectations based on the price were a little high. These binoculars are still not high end instruments. You could spend one to three thousand dollars on binoculars. While the chromatic aberration is much improved on these ED binos compared to the standard binos, there is still some CA present and that was what I expected.
