Celia knew she was embracing the beauty of black latinoamericanos, she was victim of racism and discrimination for the color of her skin she sure shut down many with her powerful music and lyrics she was a super strong woman who always told her truth and stayed true to what she believed in I love her wow! thanks for all the likes.

ilcemsilva - Exactly! It wasn’t only that she was black but she was a woman in a time when men dominated the music industry! She was an amazing woman! If you haven’t had a chance, check out “Celia” a Netflix series about her life and rise to stardom. Great way to learn about all the crap she had to endure and her strength and persistence! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Thank you for pointing that out. My family is Puerto Rican and my uncle alway called my mother "mi negra" - that's not racist at all. It was a familial term of endearment, after they are brother and sister and both are "dark" by North American standards.
@Lil08103
@Lil08103 4 жыл бұрын
@@wvanderwahl i'm not saying "negra" is bad--i'll leave that up to afro-latinos who have better context--but i do want to challenge your broader assumption here: that because smthng is a term of endearment or well intentioned, it can't be racist.

i think it's just hard for many ppl to make sense of several competing truths. on one hand, you all have characterized a nickname based on pigmentation as a term of endearment and suggested it cant be fully understood across cultures. that makes immediate sense because other appearance-based nicknames in spanish (i.e., flaco, gordita, etc) don't always translate so kindly in english. on the other hand, there's the ongoing reality of colorism in latin america and the "we're raceless, everybody's mixed" mythology that prevents ppl from confronting this colorism. i def know contexts here and abroad are muy different but i'm struggling to make sense of the "it's all endearment" idea when, for example, growing up i watched a full decade of latin american news and telenovelas to learn spanish, and morenos were few and far btwn on programs and when they did make appearances, they played servants and poor ppl. so i feel like there's possibly a more nuanced conversation available here than what both the clip and some of you're are saying.

Lady Gaga, Madona y Celia son grandes artistas en sus repsectivo generos, y no recuerdo que ninguna reclamara la moda de las pelucas y ese estilo como suyo, de hecho, no son las unicas artistas que usaron y usaran estilos extravagantes. celia cruz my queen of salsa, she opens the doors for us woman to be able to sing salsa! if you don't know salsa was considered and is still considered to this day a man's world, so when Celia when solo after leaving her salsa group and became successful she shocked the Latin community especially the salsa world! because back in those days there was this belief that if you were a woman singing salsa then you could only be a backup singer, not the main vocalist! celia broke that tabu when she became the main vocalist for the salsa group Sonora matancera! so everyone expected her to join another salsa group and continue being supported by the men in the salsa group! nobody expected her to go solo and becoming a world sensation! SHE WAS ALSO THE VERY FIRST AFRO LATINA THAT BECAME WORLD FAMOUS NOT ONLY IN LATIN AMERICA BUT ALSO AROUND THE WORLD! TO THIS DAY SHE IS THE ONLY AFROLATINA THAT HAVE MANAGED TO ACHIEVE WORLD STARDOM! I grew up listening to this lady, hell half of the people my generation grew up listening to this lady, our grandmas were her fans so it was obvious that her music would be playing like crazy in every Latin American and Caribbean homes! you are watching one of Latin Americas greatest and most amazing ICONS AND LEGENDS!

I always thought this song was very interesting. There is a deep double meaning to the song, especially eaten with the rest of lyrics. The rest of the song has to do with how one is remembered after passing, and how one should live rightly. The word tumbao superficially means grace or swagger (it musically refers to the drum deep baseline in Afro-Caribbean drumming), but it’s also is a elision of the word “tumbado” which can also mean “fallen” or “entombed”. The words “nunca camina del la(d)o, can mean both “she never walks on the side” or as an imperative can mean “don’t ever walk beside her”...so the words “todo la sigue por su caminao” meaning “everyone follows her as she walks” can wake a more ominous tone, as it can mean ‘sidewalk’ to ‘walkway’ but can also mean “path” as in the general path one takes in life. So the song, especially the chorus, on the surface is a fun song about a woman who walks with swagger and confidence, but when taken with the rest of the lyrics in the song, can be heard as an admonition to do the opposite, and be conscious of how you live your life and not necessarily chasing what looks attractive, but may eventually lead you to a fall.

Celia Cruz was that rarity that was having the hugest hits of her career up until her late 70's and it was pure fire and not some "old people music" but rather something that you'd hear in every young person's club. Imagine if Aretha was scoring #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 75 and was still performing up until the end. There has never been anyone quite like her.

Lmao!!! I was waiting on the part when she got naked!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is why Celia Cruz is so iconic! Avant-garde, ahead of her time. This song could come out today & ppl will still relate. At the time ppl thought Hispanics where only what they depicted of us. Celia taught us we come in all shapes & sizes & to always walk tall.

Heck yeah! Merry Christmas to me!!! This song/vid is the total ish... It remains groundbreaking and avant garde with a hint of transgression (just to mess with the mainstream folk)... It's all that I love from our QUEEN... black is beautiful. *All hail the QUEEN!* PD: Thanks for reacting to this masterpiece

Exacto!

you are one of the few who manages to break out of the mexican territory. That usually happens to many reactors who start reaction to Spanish music, but in reality they are only really reacting to Mexican music and never actually react to other spanish/latin music. this was Celia at the very end of her career and life. She died like 5 years after this song came out. She dominated South Florida.

Hey there my brother. I'm Afrolatino and I wanted to explain the symbolism about this song. The Cuban lady with gold body paint represents Oshun, Celia Cruz, may she be in God's glory, gave homage to Oshun as represented by the lady in gold paint and the peacock feather that Celia is wearing in one of the scene. She also gave homage to Yemaya and Elegua in the scene where the young lady is wearing the blue dress and the man with the red and black suit is dancing at the intersection, Elegua is the keeper of the crossroads that's why they are dancing at that intersection. So there is a profound traditional African religious representation that is Beautifully and skillfully weaved into this video, specifically of Yoruba origin of Nigeria.

@SuperPuma82
@SuperPuma82 4 жыл бұрын
Y me falto la ultima referencia, ya para terminar en el minuto 7:09 se ve a tres personas (la negrita, y dos como vestidos de soldados en traje de gala) y justo atras de ellos es el Monumento a Juarez, ubicado en la Alameda Central.
