Dr Shivani Deswal, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead, Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Transplant Hepatologist at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram, explains celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. This results in an immune reaction that damages the intestines, leading to nutrient malabsorption and deficiencies. In northern and northwestern India, one in a hundred people may be affected.
Celiac disease is often called a clinical chameleon due to its varied symptoms, including recurrent diarrhoea, anaemia, and poor weight gain in children, and atypical symptoms like delayed puberty, dental issues, and infertility in adults. Screening involves a blood test (anti-tTG IgA and serum IgA), with a confirmed diagnosis requiring upper GI endoscopy and duodenal biopsies. This is crucial as the only treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet.
A gluten-free diet allows children with celiac disease to lead normal lives. Regular follow-ups with a paediatric gastroenterologist are essential for monitoring growth and nutrition and staying updated on potential new treatments.
