Loved this reaction! I think that what makes you vibe differently when she sings in french is because it is her native language and therefore, it's easier for her to channel the vocal emotions that she wants to transmit and feel. Being myself a french-canadien native, and singing coach here I think it must be just that. Keep up the good work!

i think the ending is supposed to be her imagination when it’s her face, because if you watch the person walking toward Ziggy is actually a man who pulls up his hood. so she still has that mental fantasy at the end, but loved your read of the kiss also being one of acceptance at the end! i hope you check out her french song “pour que tu m’aimes encore,” i think she uses the dynamics of her voice really well to emphasise the lyrics of it

Celine recorded an English version of this song as a part of Tycoon. The English speaking cover of Starmania from which The world is stone (by Cyndi Lauper) and Only the very best (SOS eng. version by Peter Kingsberry) was extracted too. At the end of the video, it’s well another man Ziggy is kissing but when the hood reveals Celine’s head is the part of her fantasy when she dream to be at the same place... The song is a piece of Marie-Jeanne character songs from the rock musical Starmania. She is a waitress working in a bar of which ziggy is a regular and whom she became friend. Ziggy is a young gay aspiring singer and Marie-Jeanne is madly in love with him but, as she says it in the song, "...knows he will never love her back".

You are right about the last bit. French is her first language and its more romantic for ballads., So she can let go more and feels safer in softer registers. But BELTING is an English language thing and so is rock or pop. Little catchy words that make nice SOUNDS are rare in French. Most of our words have multiple syllables. In English, you can do a lot more sequential acrobatics with multiple words. Bu tit usually sounds more "guttural", with fewer vowels.

About the different chord in French: yes she does, so do all french native speakers. Singing in your native language always elminates some filters and connectsbyou directly to your heart and soul. In addition, french song are about strong lyrics, conveying stories and emotions, as opposed to US songs, which are more on the pure entertainment side

Like other said, this is a cover from Starmania opera rock... Ziggy is one of the characters, obviously inspired by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust... It's an interesting story and a kind of extrapolation around "fame" and "star" stuff, and how "people" have just this as a dream to "live" in a superficial "future". It was quite ahead of its time, and the subject is more true today than in those times (end of 70's)...

She is very much aware that he's 🌈 . The last sentence says "même si je sais qu'il ne m'aimera jamais" or "even though I known he will never be in love with me", but he is so fine she wishes he was hers. My mom loves this song that came out at the height of the AIDS epidemic. She said it brought normalcy and support to queer people in Francophone countries when they needed it most. 💕Céline💕

The "Starmania" rock opera (originally written by Berger & Plamondon) features lots of talented persons you already know, Dereck: of course Celine in that case ("Ziggy" and "Tonight we dance Extravagance"), but also D.Balavoine (as Johnny Rockfort - "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" & many others), F.Gall (as Cristal -" besoin d'amour" & others) as well. And to go on with the 1992/93 English version ( _Tycoon_ ) one can find Nina Hagen singing "You get what you deserve", Kim Carnes singing "Working girl" ( _La complainte de la serveuse automate_ ), Tom Jones with "I would love to change the world" ( _Le blues du businessman_ ), Peter Kingsberry for "Ego Trip" and "Only the very best" ( _SOS d'un terrien en détresse_ ), Cyndi Lauper for "You have to learn to live alone" ( _Les uns contre les autres_ ) and "The world is stone" ( _Le monde est stone_ ). This musical is a gold mine for you. You should dig into it (you know the drill...)

Here you go. You've discovered your second Starmania song. Good instincts: in the story, Mary Jeanne (the automate waitress; sung by Celine Dion here, but originally sung by Fabienne Thibault) lives a lonely life waitressing at the Underground Cafe. She only has one friend: Ziggy. The song explains how they met, how she was instantly attracted to him like a moth to light and she can't turn away even if she knows he will never love her in "that" way. It's a poignant song. He is the star around which her life revolves. In Starmania, the imagery of stars and stardom, light and dark, attraction and repulsion is very pervasive (lots of double meaning throughout the show). Mary Jeanne lives in darkness ("underground" cafe) but aspires to light (Ziggy). She's in the grey zone in between these two worlds. Some of the characters are fully in the light, while others, like Johnny Rockford (you've listened to SOS from an earthling in distress sung by Daniel Balavoine) live in the dark, away from mainstream society. The whole crux of Starmania is what happens to these characters as they try to cross into the light or dark, depending on where they are starting from. This cover is lovely but slightly "off" because the song is out of the context of the full show. It still stands on its own and Celine Dion did right by it (but then, she always does, doesn't she :-) )

Lyrics by famous quebecois lyricist: Luc Plamondon Music:Michel Berger...from Starmania opera rock...there is a english version And you're right, sshe is a way better singer in french, with better song...she doesn,t feel the need to blow all the time

Nope, at least to me, you’re not wrong: Celine Dion strikes a different chord in Franch than in English. Personally, I bought her first English album and I was so disappointed (because her songs didn’t strike me emotionally) that I stopped listening to her altogether... I have no idea what her English songs are now... 😅

Imo Celine‘s vocal intonation changed by the late 90‘s become a bit irritatingly nasal.. her early nineties output in French and English was much more organic so to say and for my ears more pleasing.

In my opinion the original by Fabienne Thibeault or the next version by Maurane were better, and the video is far from the dark atmosphere of Starmania (With songs like "S.O.S. d'un terrien en détresse", "le monde est stone" and many others... here it's an impossible love story and the character is suffering a lot about it...)
