I second this answer. The ploidy level (the number of duplicate chromosomes) doesn't change when the chromosomes replicate. Many organisms (mostly plants) do have many copies of each chromosome, though. Wild strawberries can have 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 9 copies depending on the species. Aside from this slip-up, though, this is a great video that really makes the contrast between mitosis and meiosis clear.

Highest test grade I ever got was a 56 and funny thing was she told me with my 64 (quarter grade) that I was doing well.

When the chromosomes duplicate the ploidy does not change from 2n to 4n. Yes the chromosomes have duplicated but they form sister chromatids which make up 1 complete chromosome (they remain connected here and are not separated). Since only one set exists from mom and one exists from dad the ploidy number remains diploid or 2n not 4n. The way you are illustrating this, you are referring ploidy to the chromosome number not by the source of the genetic material.
@meetamyskar12 жыл бұрын
These videos are so much of help!!! god bless Paul Anderson! its making my life so simple.....
@j3fritz11 жыл бұрын
DNA replication doubles the quantity of DNA but it does not change the chromosome number. This is not a subjective understanding...but a common misconception. 4N are tetraploid cells with 4 copies of each type of chromosome regardless of the number of chromatids each chromosome are made of.
@jayejayeee12 жыл бұрын
really informative and interesting

When the cell cycle multiplies, the chromosome that is being copied is not 1n to 2n to 1n- it is simply 1n to 1n to 1n because the duplicated chromosome is still considered a single chromosome.
