I was watching an Inked Magazine video where these tattoo artists talked about how they noticed a pattern of clients who get name/couple tattoos mainly being women- the men would either back out or just not get it at all. Then, it turned out that these women often were in abusive relationships and that this 'branding' in spirit of sorts was a hint to that dynamic. Of course, not everyone who gets couple tattoos are in toxic or abusive relationships, but often times this pattern is due to those women being essentially branded as property of their partner going back to misogynistic roots and so on. It's extremely terrifying, I of course knew about how couple tattoos get criticized- especially huge face tattoos- for often being a huge regret, but I didn't realize how it often mainly was something that affected women, and in particular female victims of abuse.

My partner got a chest tattoo of a unicorn when she was in the Air Force. It was a sign of freedom for her. But 20 years later, after kids and wanting a real career, she began to hate her tattoo and wanted it removed. Her ex-husband forbid her from removing it (one of the many reasons he's an EX). But when we began dating 10 years ago, I fully supported whatever she wanted. We went to a dermatologist that told her the colors of her tattoo couldn't be removed. So I researched it for awhile, and found a new laser (at the time) called a PICOSURE laser and there 4 in the whole state. Fortunately, one was close by. I went to all 7 or 8 treatments. I watched her cry from the pain. She did it slowly, often taking 4-6 months between treatments (They said the faster you want it gone, the more treatments it takes). After 3+ years, it's gone. She wears clothes now with confidence, instead of hiding her tattoo. It was an important transformation for her. It 100% changed her life.

@@MaterLacrymarum Its not even about forgiveness, that goes to show you weren't really listening to what was being said. It is about having some empathy and compassion, you don't need to understand a situation fully from a personal standpoint in order to have some empathy towards another person, but for some reason that is being lost a lot right now in society. You can look at someone in these positions, such as Alyssa and you might feel yourself being judgemental and saying. ''Oh god why would you do that? that doesn't look good? who would make such a choice?'' and its instead trying to change the narrative into empathy, and turn those thoughts into, ''I hope she's okay, I hope she's in a good place, I hope she gets the help she needs''. You don't need to forgive someone's mistake, no but you can absolutely have a shred of empathy and make their life easier to live and navigate while they live with their mistakes and choices. The last thing that people like Alyssa need, is horrible comments, judgement and cruelty especially when she's already working towards trying to correct her 'mistake' and choice. A lot of people ended up making those poor decisions in the first place because they were abused, misguided and treated poorly and they probably didn't realise that they did not deserve that and that they deserved kindness in their lives. When we offer kindness and empathy we are also helping these people self-realise what they deserve, and that can lead to better, more informed decisions because they will possess the strength to do so. Nobody is going to do anything good for themselves if they're continually put down with judgement and mean-spirit, they will just think they deserve the bad things and will never feel strong enough to feel otherwise.

I’m sure there’s a lot of nuance that many people don’t realize are affecting how they view and respond to these situations with these respective people. She’s also been locked up so that’s another tick against her. I would say her being an ex heroin addict plays a huge role along with her previous time in lock up. Her being a victim of abuse based on that preemptive knowledge of her addiction and law breaking tendencies I’m sure paints her as “someone who deserved to be abused for being a user and criminal.” They probably assume a plethora of things that make it easier to be mean to her and hate on her. But most people doing this cruel commenting I’d say don’t even realize what’s affecting their opinion of her so it could be broader than that. It’s complex to say the least.

Was a single mom finding my way after an abusive relationship and attempted murder against me…. then my world was destroyed and I lost it all. I ended up getting an apprenticeship after a year of becoming HEAVILY tattooed and addicted. From the smell of green soap to the pain to the atmosphere and the almost therapy it… nobody told me to slow down because of what was happening in my life. I'm sure Alyssa got a lot of hate for getting the tattoos and having them for the whole time she was in a manipulative relationship, and all that negative feedback at first was helpful to realize what abusive situtuation she was in. However, it's so sad that when she gets out of the bad relationship, and tries to make right with the public's view of her, and erase permanent evidence of that person on her body, people still criticise her mid process of making it right. It's not night and day. The marks she made on herself representing the bad place she was in, do not reflect who she is now. It's not right to punish her today for who she was. Clearly she regrets it if she too agrees she doesn't want it on her. It will take months to years to right it. She knows it's wrong and looks bad, she's doing what she can to erase it. Leave it be.

Im guessing class and gender plays a role in who gets support and who gets dragged. I do think that it is very likely there will be heaps of people getting removals. Seeing how many folks at very young ages are getting face tattoos and other very visible ink. I have a lot of ink, and it's almost all easy to hide. Even if I didn't love my tattoos, at least I could always hide them away. I guess I have my age and culture of tattoos to thank for that. Tattoos were frowned upon mostly when I was growing up. So we were engrained to get them in discreet areas. While some of my tattoos are very large, they are easily hidden. But when I want to show them off, I am sad that I really can't show most of them :( ... oh well. Xinial gen problems.

I read an interesting article in a medical journal some years ago. I wish I could remember which one it was. The proposed theory was that excessive tattooing and body modifications were actually a form of self-harm, particularly in women. It fell under the same behavior as "cutting." However, tats and body mods were more accepted as a lifestyle choice or artistic expression. Facial tats/mods/piercings were considered to be the most extreme form of this disorder. The article postulated that if these people matured and/or found other ways to cope with their trauma/mental illnesses, they would try to cover up or have their tattoos removed.

I started at 28 and have no regrets, and am only getting more heavily tattooed! I also did all of the internal work first- went to therapy for a few years and healed from my past. I think a lot of people think of aesthetic decisions as solutions for internal issues. At the end of the day, a tattoo is just a tattoo. A haircut is just a haircut. And when it's over and done with, you're still the person you were before you got it done. So if you were miserable before, you're gonna be miserable after. I think that's where a lot of regret nowadays comes from. People get many aesthetic changes done, and they're shocked to learn that they're still miserable inside after the initial dopamine rush wears off. Because they never addressed their actual issues. Just my two cents as someone who's seen a lot of traumatized kids turn to body mods and end up regretting them.

I suspect there are 4 reasons Alyssa is getting more hate. Three of them are obvious… misogyny, the appearance of the tattoos, and her past criminal record and addiction. The one that’s less obvious is that she still has some self esteem issues that subtly show through in her body language and speech patterns. And people often pick up on these subtle expressions subconsciously. This emits a signal that attracts people who are also dealing with self-esteem issues who cope through externalizing their shame onto others and feeling superior to another person and her channel has attracted a lot of them in her audience. It’s probably a lot better than it was before though as it seems like she’s done a lot of self-esteem work too. She’s just perhaps not quite out of the woods yet in terms of the more subtle expressions of that self-esteem issue.

I also stopped giving a fuck about what anyone else thinks of me, which is a big factor to consider when becoming heavily tattooed. I think there would be a lot less tattoo regret if people just waited. Plus, then you can get a better artist and your tattoos will come out better once you're more financially secure and mentally mature. Just my take as someone with no regret who's glad she waited.

I remember I got my first tattoo at 17, I had to go of my own country for it as the minimum age in my country is 18+. I got it as one off whilst I was on holiday but then came back immediately after arriving home for more. I turned 18 only a weeks ago but my arms and shoulders are already completely covered with tats. I was 17, working part time but making a lot for a teenager and still lived at home so no commitments and rarely saw my parents so they didn’t even notice when I was out of the country for a day. I blew all my money on travel to this country and the tattoos. I’ll give myself some praise for always getting something that actually meant something to me and I really liked (I know many that don’t think about their tats) but still, I was mainly doing it because being in that chair with a needle repeatedly stabbing me felt so good. I don’t regret my tattoos, but I’m only 18. I’m terrified of getting to my 30s and really regretting them. I also don’t understand how tattoo addiction isn’t more talked about. By society but mainly tattoo artists. My tattoo artist knew I was traveling every other week from another country but didn’t question it and still tattooed me. My mother encouraged me to get my first one at 17. I got 4 tats (2 big pieces, 2 small) on my 18th birthday and nobody said ANYTHING. I was definitely suffering from another more talked about addiction at the same time too (*alcoholism*) and despite everyone knowing I was 17 and drunk nearly 24/7 nobody said anything, not even the adults tattooing me. *EDIT:* I’m also covered in piercings, ears and face. I feel the same way about them. And I also do feel like other people’s responses to my face and body could of been drastically different, if I were a man. It’s always different for women. My male cousin could crash his car and be arrested and my family give him a stern look but nobody really cared because I got a face piercing on the same day and they are more concerned about calling me to scream at me for it (true story). And you can find out easily but I’m purposely not saying which country allows tattoos at 17.

Alyssa looks like such a lovely person. It must have been brutal to do, it really shows how strong she is. I wish she didn't have to be as strong as she currently is needing to be. Wish I could give her a hug. Sometimes I have patients come through my clinic who have clearly had very rough pasts, and have the face tattoos to prove it. I am in general, a very friendly and cheerful person (except if it is the morning), but I make an effort to let them know that they are welcome, valued and respected in my clinic. Its nice when I see them slowly feel safe with me. I think Egg is getting more support because he is classically attractive and that attractiveness and charisma is visible with his face tattoos. I think it is a combo of pretty privilege and misogyny.

Also, maybe it’s because I had a horrible childhood that still at age 48 f’s with me, I never ask why anyone did something that I may find strange. People will tell you what they are comfortable telling you. The only people who know the extent of my abuse are the therapists who literally saved my life. It’s so crazy because looking at me you would never know I was abused as a kid because I present happy go lucky with a joke ready and smile. If I let you stay around me long enough you will notice I do not invite you to my home, ever. I finally have a home I can be safe in-I can’t risk anyone taking that away. I am better now emotionally and I don’t cut people out of my life at the earliest disappointment (as much-learning process). Their tatoos they had is what I had internally. I don’t know, I’m rambling. I did get my first ever tattoos two years ago- in both of my inner wrists. They are based on my favorite lines from a Stephen King book (I read every single book of his when I was younger. My fave author). I now tell people when they ask, but I wish people would just admire or notice a tattoo and then wait to see if the person with the tattoo tells you what getting or erasing a tattoo means to them instead of asking. Sometimes you would rather drown than explain. Ugh sorry for the long comment this video hit a spot I guess.

Cello, this is a great video, and you made many wonderful points. I agree that women are judged more critically on their body choices than men …because women’s bodies are scrutinized more closely than men’s. I’m sure you’re correct that some people inquiring as to why people removing tattoos got them in the first place ARE motivated by self-satisfaction or the urge to shame them. But I don’t think that’s the majority of people (at least I hope not). I expect some truly want a better understanding of tattoo culture, and what motivates someone to do something. Maybe parents are asking to develop some insight when discussing the issue with their kids. And maybe some want to know if people are less worried about being tattooed because lasers can now remove them non-surgically. As odd as it sounds, the only way to learn not to judge a group of people engaging in what seems like inexplicable behavior is for them to de-mystify themselves. I hope that makes some sense. 😕
