Our cellos normally do not come with frets. However, we installed frets into the fingerboard of this cello upon a client's request! Musician: Cassandra, K.C. Strings Retail Staff Team www.kcstrings.com

Thats because the bow took a esential part in a cello tunning .

My guess is that this is like a fretted Viper violin, where the frets are very shallow and not enough to lock in on the pitch. Notice how she's able to do an uninterrupted slide/glissando. I think that's intentional. The frets can serve to help fingers feel where the positions are, but they don't really work the same way as a guitar or other fretted instrument, forcing chromaticism.

I think it's intonation. The variable scale length due to moving bridge affects the pitch at higher frets. Just like an electric guitar: if you haven't intonated the scale perfectly using intonation screws for little string blocks at the bridge, your guitar will sound in tune on the first 7-10 frets, but will start to sound sharper or flatter as you go up.

why does it sound out of tune sometimes though?
@isetta40832 жыл бұрын
I imagine string tension wasn't taken into account, with a higher action the string being pressed sharpens its pitch, especially higher up on the fretboard, I encountered this problem myself on some the banjos I used to make

I want frets on my violin 🎻. Are you still in business?
@KCStrings Жыл бұрын
To put frets on any bowed string instrument means we would need to replace the old fingerboard with a new one that had frets. Pretty expensive. Email us if you're interested at info@kcstrings.com :)

@@KCStrings Good looking out. I have a (Mark) Wood Viper 5 string. After kommenting on your short i started kgallung a few violin makers within my region. I learned alot. I never new fingerboards we're glued in such a way as to be taken off for planing. Something about Hyd*(?) Glue used for the sole purpose, Of being able to frakture? Man that's a heavy trip. I rekkon I'll just make do with my Fiddle Fretter laminate for now. Also,thank you for responding. I totally subskribed. Have a wonderful day.

Why? I came to the instrument late in life, after fifty years as a guitarist. While the cello and guitar have ALMOST the same interval spacing, the finger 'stretch' on the cello is a slight bit larger. I'm looking to do some gut frets on my cello, (Those are at least reversible) in order to be able to play it a little more competently. Had I started as a youth, then yes, perhaps I would see this as cheating. But, at 66, with both arthritis and four hand surgeries behind me, I feel learning THE BOW is quite challenging enough. BTW- I checked out your video: I wish I had your skill set. -Very nice...

Notice that she's also able to do vibrato. I think the answer is that these frets are probably very shallow, not really intended to work like a guitar, where pushing anywhere between frets will lock the pitch in on the next chromatic step. Some fretted violins work this way as well. The frets can sort of be felt under the fingers, like a guide, but they don't amount to a tuning "cheat" or interfere with slides, vibrato or other technique.
