Just learning mandolin but I love jigs and Celtic music
@markpoppe8681 Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking of picking up the mandolin, but I'm not sure where to start. There's so many types of mandolin and playing styles. I love jigs, but also bluegrass. Your octave mandolin in another video sounds wonderful. I'm wondering if I should start with that because of my involvement in a church choir .

Some unsolicited advice from a stranger. Go with Celtic first. It’s not easy but you may find learning it a bit more manageable, or just pick one and stick with it a while. Get a good quality instrument but don’t worry too much over the style of body or sound ports.

Yes Magnus, I love this style of music. What was the name of the tune you played at the beginning of the video?

What is the make and model of your gorgeous twin-point mando?

I've seen jigs taught as DUD DUD and as DUD UDU but I agree with you that the first is just so much more jig-like, even if it does take some practice to get. Nice explanation!

OMG, this year my Celtic tune might actually be ready before St Patty’s day here in the US... Thanks Magnus!

Yes! Love playing that type of music! I've no idea if I'm doing DUD when I pick them though. Now that I've watched this , I will go check and see 😁! Thank you!

Yes, it's very developing to pay attention to your picking directions. You go wandering128!

I especially like your arpeggio exercise, and the way you so often hit two birds (or three!) with one stone.

Nice video! What is the tune at the start, and can I find a tab somewhere?

Thank you Magnus. I use DUD when plain jigs and other 6/8 but when I have to play faster I more often use DUDU. But I'll have a try. 👍

Super Christian! Yes, I can see why DUDU works good in fast tempos. I try to use DUD still...

Should be spelled Gigue, not jig. Thanks for the lesson!

When you say ‘going through the arpeggios in the D major scale’ do you mean the arpeggiated chords for each note in the D major scale? :)

Could you please clarify something for me? You say the pattern is down, up, down, down, up. Once you begin to play it looks like you are doing down, down, up, down, down, up. Could you please reply with the pattern repeated i.e down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up or whatever it may be please, as I'm finding it difficult to see the full pattern once you begin playing

Same pattern, just looks different because you are counting from a different starting point.
