Celtic Mythology - An Introduction to the Tuatha Dé Danann

A short introdocution to one of the most important races in Celtic Mythology - the Tuatha Dé Danann. These were the old gods of Ireland, Britain, and much of Europe, and their tales have been preserved for us in ancient manuscripts first written by Christian monks over a thousand years ago.
And if that isn't your thing, then maybe the scenery is - I'm on top of An Cruachán, a mountain between Kerry and Cork in South-West Ireland.

As an Aussie of British decent, I've been getting into Irish mythology, and I have to say thanks for the proper pronunciations! I'm glad that I can now say 'Tuatha dé denann' and 'The Morrígan' now without botching how they're said 😄

It is a breathe of fresh air to see a video so well presented as this. Not often do presenters attempt proper pronounciation and we get Anglicised version of Celtic/Gaelic names and words. Definite subscription and I look forward to more of your work.

I became a taxi-driver in Dublin a year ago and my very limited knowledge of Irish folklore and mythology has become very useful to the fantastic tourists we receive. It's made me hungry for more and to top up what was taught to us 40yr ago in school.

I so love the celtic myths! Im volunteering at scouting and go on yearly summercamps with kids. During those camps we always have a theme. Most themes are mythological, done egyptian, greek, norse, arabian, and this year its gonna be celtic! You're video's are a huge help in researching it all!

Thank you so much for this indepth history lesson! I am a descendant of the Madden family from Cork but my family have lived in Aotearoa/New Zealand for many generations and aren’t very clued up in our Irish culture. I am Māori too so learning about my Māori culture always makes me feel more full yet more empty knowing I’m missing out on other beautiful parts of myself so thank you very much for this video. It’s very heart warming to be learning more about the origins of this layer of me and my ancestors. I will be watching more of your videos and hopefully some new ones in the future 🥰

A lot of people who have celtic heritage have blue eyes 👀 which by a strange DNA mutation first appear in what is now Syria. So all blue eyed people are distantly related to the people of that region. Tis interesting alongside stories of the Celts arriving in old mythologies but could have arrived via the Nordic regions in more recent history. Fascinating stuff and thank you for this fab video!

@@tomasohaodha1078 . I'm from the USA. I've been studying the Celts, Celtic mythology, tales, archaeology, for years, on my own. I've a question for you. Recently, archaeologists have said that the mass migration of the Keltoi(or other groups) did NOT go to Eire, as per the tale of the Milesians. For me, that doesn't sound logical. I'd love your take on this. Thank you for your time and help. Also, do you know if I could get credit, somehow, for my private studies? Thanks maith go Mach, a charaid, Tina

Hi there @@tinaloflin1174 - I'm afraid I wouldn't know about credit for your private studies - I imagine that depends on where you're attending school. However I *can* suggest further material for your comment about the Celts migrating from the East. Have a search for videos by Barry Cunliffe - he is a proponent of the "Celtic from the West" hypothesis, he is very qualified and a great speaker! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGSqo61qa8iCm8k

Hi Tomás, fantastic video here thank you! I would love to hear you speak about the ancient context of Samuin - very curious to know more about it - reading about its reference at the beginning of The Wasting Sickness of Cú Chulaind and conscious that we're almost at that 7 day festival in the next week or so. So yes I would love to hear some more context and juicy insights into that. Sadly I can't speak/understand Irish but I would love to be able to.

Still a god of war. Many Cththonic deities were still gods of the underworld or "otherworld", but they weren't seen as "evil" or "dark" forces entirely, they were closely associated with rebirth and regeneration. A "war god" plays a largely symbolic role, their purpose is much deeper and older than that relating to war and so-called "warrior cultures"
