I got into a very ridiculous but vicious argument with my sister over what the song is about. Her feeling is that the person who is singing to Danny Boy is his lover making a group of men singing it inappropriate. I think that even if that was the case (although it's not), it would be just as appropriate for a lover to mourn the potential loss just as grievous and sad regardless of the sexual orientation of the people involved. I believe that the song is being sung by the parents of a boy going off to war and who are concerned that he might be killed in action & thus leaving them forever. What's you guys' take on it?

I feel that it's probably more likely that the song is about a soldier leaving for war and that's the way I choose to interpret it. I think that individuals can think of the song in any way they wish though. It's clearly about missing a loved one in any case, and it's a great tune. Love this version.

One of the Celtic Thunder guys, can't remember which one right now, has stated that it's from the perspective of a father whose son is leaving Ireland and going to America. Before the invention of jet planes, if you emigrated, chances are you wouldn't be able to go back home for years if ever, and by the time you did get home if you were lucky enough, there was a huge possibility your family members would have passed on. This is why the second verse, which is not on this version, asks Danny Boy to say a prayer over his dad's grave if dad dies before Danny Boy returns.

Christy Davidson I believe it is definitely about a soldier going off to war, because it says "the pipes, the pipes are calling"--that is, bagpipes summoning the men to fight. Also, there's a version which says at the end "if I should live and you should die for Ireland, let not your dying thoughts be just of me . . ." etc. Now, personally, I always assumed that the individual singing the song was the soldier's sweetheart, but it doesn't have to be--it COULD be his parents. And even if it is his sweetheart, I agree with you that it's still ok for a guy to sing this song. Because it's really just about love, and love is something everybody experiences. Same thing if a woman sang "The Rose of Tralee" or "The Maid of Culmore" or "Down By the Salley Gardens," which are all songs about a guy remembering a lost sweetheart.
