The Mavericks are trying too hard to force mismatches and are using ineffective screeners to get their offense going instead of taking what the defense is giving them. The defense is giving you ample opportunities for off-ball screens with your Centers instead of leaving them on the low block clogging up space. The defense is giving you mismatches elsewhere besides your usual screeners. As you pointed out coach around 9:30. Tatum cannot guard Luka and I certainly don’t think he can guard Kyrie. And even if he can, why not tire him out and create opportunities later on? The defense is also giving you multiple pick & pop opportunities. Run the P&R on the wing and instead of having Derrick Jones Jr roll (which we saw in this video he is not comfortable or good at doing), have him pop back out to the corner. The Celtics will have to get their centers out the paint to guard him in the corner as long as he maintains a respectable jumper! Jason Kidd needs to step it up!

They have to experiment with running the P&R on the wing. It may not generate the mismatches they’re looking for, but it will instantly create more open 3s. Look at the spacing at 7:59. If Kyrie were to call for a screen from Gafford here instead of isolating Jrue Holiday, here’s what would’ve happened: First, Gafford would run over to that side and set the screen. Tatum would have followed him. Gafford then sets the screen, and Tatum switches on to Kyrie while Gafford drives against Jrue. That creates a lot of opportunities. Number 1, if Gafford gets good positioning inside on Jrue, it forces someone to help. With this spacing, it would be impossible for Kristaps to help Jrue in the paint without fully giving up Jones Jr in the corner. So boom, an open 3 is generated. Another opportunity this could create is that Gafford could simply do a pre-slip or ghost screen and not set the pick at all but just act like he will. This could confuse the Celtics and get Kyrie or Gafford wide open with optimal spacing that would force the Celtics to have to help and send their defense scrambling in rotations.

Great video coach, I was thinking since game 1 that the Mavs should use more the Spain pick and roll because it would be the only thing (other than completely change the way they plays) they can do to move Boston defense out of position. I saw this used little to none by the Mavas but I think they could have great opportunities, even with Kyrie or Luka as screener. But the reality is that Kyrie seems to be on a completely different planet right now. He is not playing at all and it is really hard in 21th century basketball to win with your second star playing this way.

The Mavs have a lot of options tbh. Option number 1 that I would immediately do is start running the P&R on the wing instead of at the top of the key. You have to at least give the Celtics a different look instead of doing the same thing every single possession. Running the P&R on the wing offers several advantages: 1. Different angles and spacing. Running it on the wing changes the angles and spacing for both the offense and defense. This can make it harder for the Celtics to recognize what’s going on and execute their switches. 2. If u run it on the wing, it fixes this spacing problem and no longer allows the man guarding the corner to guard 2 ppl at the same time like Derrick White did at 2:14. It creates a CLEAR strong side and weak side differential. If the Celtics are gonna be heavily focused on the strong side (whichever wing you choose to run the P&R) it will most definitely create more corner 3s and cutting opportunities for the weak side when the help defender comes over. 3. More driving lanes for the ball handler. Like I said, this will completely eliminate the Celtic who’s guarding the corner from being able to hedge and also get back to his man to help stop Luka when he comes off the screen looking to penetrate as seen at 2:14. This will force a true 2 on 2 P&R where help defenders will HAVE to give up their man completely and commit to playing help.
@RoyaltyGotHits
@RoyaltyGotHits 13 күн бұрын
Look what happens when Kyrie attacks from the wing at 6:50. The Celtics have no choice but to help from the weak side if they want to close off the drive. Unfortunately Kyrie didn’t pass, but the open 3 was generated.
@nextblkpres
@nextblkpres 12 күн бұрын
@@RoyaltyGotHitsthis is a good catch. But the ideal shot they need to generate are corner 3s. Jrue has to split the difference between Washington in the corner and DJ above the break. Which player do you think he's going to rotate towards?
@RoyaltyGotHits
@RoyaltyGotHits 12 күн бұрын
@@nextblkpreswell in this situation I think Derrick Jones Jr should’ve been in the right corner instead of being above the break on the left side. If he was in the right corner, it would’ve got Kristaps out the paint. Kristaps would’ve been too slow to play help defense on Kyrie and make it back to DJJ to get a good contest. Luka should have been where DJJ was in this play. That would have given Kyrie the entire right wing and middle of the court to work with. You asked a great question and you are correct to assume Jrue would preferably give up the three from DJJ above the break before he gives up a corner 3 from PJ. However, it’s nothing a small adjustment can’t fix. If the Celtics are going to make Porzingis guard DJJ you have to use that to your advantage and keep DJJ in the corner which keeps Porzingis out of the paint. Putting DJJ on the wing doesn’t keep Porzingis out of the paint because he doesn’t respect Derrick Jones Jr’s ability to shoot non-corner 3s.

Not even close to the same scenario. Kd unlike Luka can play off the ball and Kd can play up tempo offense. If Kd and kyrie had this Dallas supporting cast and a full season together they would be very competitive with Dallas. The Dallas Mavs of last year lacked continuity and size. If Kyrie cant utilise them, make him run around the screens and shoot of the catch, since he's better at it (especially from the wing) than other Mavericks. I never understood why wouldnt they try to make off ball screens between a center and a wing who's guarded by the celtics big man, so they would switch again, or at least make some room for the shooters and slashers. You can even do it in the corner, not just on the wing

The team is super talented but you can obviously notice Joe’s imprint on every game. The 3Pt shooting that everyone was criticizing them for is Joe’s doing. When the Mavs have run this action with Gafford setting screens, Tatum and brown just switch. This isn't creating any advantage for the Mavs because the Celtics aren't forced to rotate or help defensively. Luka is driving past Tatum and scoring 2s and hasn't had any lobs. Holiday has been slipping by Gafford "screens" and just staying on Luka.

probably not, the celtics seemed to only jump as high as they have to, i.e., even with KP gone, they can still hold their ground. Game 1 was a blow out, and even though game 2 was very close, whatever dallas did, looked very complicated and exhausting, while Celtics got a lot of easy buckets. The only chance for Dallas to win is if Kyrie can pick himself up and beat the Celtics defense. But Jrue is no joke. Taller, strong, one of the best defenders in the league, already won a ring. So, I dont hink Dallas has a chance to win in 7. I think this will be over in 5 or at most 6 games.

I like the analytics which is way better than the TV entertainers however if I may, it seems that there is a definite Dallas bias when it came to the commentator discussing referees as he pointed all the mistakes the refs made against Dallas and not one against Boston. But the gravest error was not pointing out the abysmal defense of Luka which is a significant deciding factor in Boston's loss. Boston actively hunted Luka because of his lackadaisical defense and he did not disappoint. Dallas can not win when it is 4 on 5. This is the finals and Boston has 5 of the best two way players in the league. (I threwup in my mouth when I said that)

Doncic needs more help if he wants to even make the series competitive so far they haven't shown up meanwhile the Celtics look battle tested like a veteran team who went through the experience of losing in the finals to golden state sometimes you gotta have that experience of losing in the finals and maybe the Mavs come back in a few years more mature and more experienced

Rofl. Gambling on steals and on ball footwork does not equal good defense. It's what you do offball and in regards to lanes that is good team defense. Both of them are incredibly lazy on off ball defense. Luka especially will do one closeout and give up. Both are horrible on stunting. Also they never played any team as balanced as the c's... all 5 can score. All 5 can play make. And all 5 can cut. All 5 can rebound. All 5 can lead transition. They also make decisions faster than most teams. Hell the Pacers were better on defense than the Mavs...and that d was atrocious but they still had more players closeout 3 or 4 times a possession. Mavs give up after 2.

How can Luka and Kyrie be allergic to defense if it's their DPOY level defense that helped put the Timberwolves on their backs last series. Kyrie needs to get out of his funk, role player shooters need to hit those open 3s every now and then and JKidd needs to come up with a plan to get us some of those lobs. If this can happen - Mavs in 7.

Bad / non calls et el, my take is: 1. Celtics will gladly give up 1 on 1 scorring by Luka even if they try to attack Tatum, so everyone else are shut down. They've learned this lesson well from playing the Heat in last 3 yrs including G2 in first round. 2. Refs for sure always help the team down 0-2 in playoffs. In fact, they did help out by giving Holiday 2 fouls in Q1 in G2. So expect more Celtics players get into foul trouble early.
