I tried it three times actually, twice fresh and once deepfried. Each time I couldn't hardly eat a nibble. It is true though that when reviewing a fruit in particular there are a lot of factors at play, such as ripeness.. which is why I try to get several fruits when I do these reviews. Thanks for watching. :)

Ira Phakira, I try to do some research whenever I have a fruit, I also try to be completely honest. If I don't like something I will say so. I do love many of the fruits here: jackfruit, rose apple, langsats, pulasans, mangosteens, the list goes on and on. But cempedak I simply do not like.

0:57 I am normally a fiction author, but I am thinking of expanding my genres. I too love cooking and especially exotic foods, and I was thinking about writing an exotic, uncommon fruit book, possibly like a picture dictionary. I will probably reference your videos for some of the information about the fruits. What do you think? There aren't too many books like that that exist.

Thanks so much. Glad you are enjoying them. :) And yes, they are a part of the same genus as Jackfruit and Breadfruit. Surprisingly Durian is from a different Genus despite the similar funky taste
@syamiljamil8 жыл бұрын
Notice that cempedak and nangka are two different fruits with similar shape and smell.. The textures of a cempedak fruit is similar with durians which are mushy and custardy while Nangka is more firm and kinda crunchy?? Their taste are like bubblegum and honey but very few Malaysians eat cempedak raw but with Nangka yes! Maybe that's why you didn't like it, we usually deepfry cempedak with flour... It's not something that we eat everyday...

Perhaps, like durian, it's a genetic thing (like some people hate fresh cilantro and think it smells and tastes like soap). My Singaporean friends told me that generally you either loved durians or hated them. I fell sort of in the middle. So that could be part of it, beyond the appearance/texture.

How would you know if an unknown fruit like that is properly ripened and not spoiled?
@Myshka3318 жыл бұрын
Probably not a fruit I will ever try. I don't think I would be able to handle a bad smelling fruit, even if its taste was different. You're description of the cempedak as being like a small animal was nauseatingly hilarious. A spinal cord! What really turned me off though was the way the flesh kind of clung to the rest of the fruit as you pulled it out. I don't know why that was the grossest part to me, but it was. The cempedak lovers of the world can continue to enjoy this one without me! Thanks for braving it!

I personally think cempedak tastes better fried. (When it's fried, there's less smell, too, and you don't need to deal with all the stickiness.) But there's a method of frying. If not done well, it won't be good either. It's hard to find really good fried cempedak.

@badrulsmj759 жыл бұрын
there are 2 type of fruit in malaysia. seasonal and non-seasonal. non-seasonal such as banana, papaya, pineapple, pomelo, jackfruit can be found throughout the year whereby seasonal fruit like mangosteen, rambutan, duku, pulasan, langsat, durian, cempedak etc may only be found during a certain time. normally 1st fruit season between june till sept and 2nd time(minor season) between dec to feb. but its not applicable to all fruit like mango season normally april to june. but somehow now we can get durian throughout the year. i dont know whether it is a new scientific approach or maybe imported from thailand because they normally pick fruit from tree even the fruit not ready yet.

I would try putting the unopened fruit in a ziploc bag and refrigerate it first before opening it up outdoors. That might cut down on the "fragrance" which is off putting. Try to think of the core as like a pineapple core instead of a spine. You are zoomorphosizingthe dang fruit too much. "Cempedak’s yellow, custard-like flesh12 and its hard seed are edible. The flesh is eaten fresh or cooked - it can be fried or its pulp creamed to make jams and cakes. Its flesh can be salted to make a pickle called .15 The hard seeds are boiled or roasted and eaten, a popular practice among the Malayan jungle tribes. Cempedak’s young leaves and whole young fruits are cooked as vegetables."

How do you know it is a cempedak or durian and the other varieties that looks like it? I always thought they were all durian so dismissed it as I've seen durian many times growing up in the Philippines. I don't like the offensive smell of the durian so I cannot say I tasted it nor had the desire to. I came close to putting one on my mouth but the texture was also not appetizing so I didn't eat it. Thanks for reviewing the cempedak. What do they call this fruit in the Philippines or do they grow in the Philippines also?
@WeirdExplorer8 жыл бұрын
I didn't see them in the Philippines when I was there, but they are very popular in nearby Borneo, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could find them somewhere. The way to tell is from the elongated shape and small spines. Good luck!

You obviously grabbed a cempedak that is not ripe. Ripe cempedak should be orange not yellow. The yellow does not taste sweet at all. Its very hard to recognize a ripe cempedak. I'm sure there's a trick to it that I don't know because I made the mistake several times myself. I always eat the ones that were chosen by my parents. If you ever come back to Malaysia again, please find a stall that sells afternoon snacks that sells deep-fried cempedak. It taste amazing.
@WeirdExplorer9 жыл бұрын
This cempedak tasted very sweet. I've had cempedak more than once and each time the vendor assured me it was ripe. I've also have had the fried cempedak and didn't like it either. Maybe its the variety or just my taste buds, but I 'd prefer durian over it any day.
