Nell's story was so sad. She cries for help and nobody "sees" her. It's a metaphor that when you're suffering from a mental illness, not only you get ignored by others (oftentimes even by your own family), you're also against your own self, basically "haunting" yourself. Your own ghost is YOU. (heh, pun intended for another show starring Nell's actress).

the great thing is, everything makes sense in the end. The bent neck lady haunting nell in the past, what steve says to his father...... the show is so incredible written that often just one or two sentences in a dialog make suddenly all comprehensible and relatable

24:30 the reason Luke is on drugs is because of the twin thing and Nellie being on medications. That why he was finally able to get clean when Nellie throw her meds in the toliet.

The Twin Thing. Notice how both Nellie and Luke are medicated. Nellie with prescription meds and Luke with heroine. Whenever Luke goes into rehab Nellie goes off her meds. When Nellie returned to the house Luke had just got his 90 day chip so Nellie had been off her meds as well for some time.

About the 'Haunting herself' The show plays with the idea of ghosts being real things, but not cause they are phantoms of dead people, but cause there are things that survived the past and haunts us. It also uses ghosts as mental issues. So the question 'are there real ghosts or its just mental illness' is not even a correct question to make. There are ghosts and they are the mental illness. Heavy depression is this deep craving for the sweet release of death and that suicide wishs haunts the minds of the affected through the whole process. People that suffers from natural chronical depression have to deal with that through their entirely life. Thats how the thought of her own death haunted her through her life. Even in the good days, the thought that one day you will give in to this wishes. This episode kind hints to this approach with the ghosts again. Nell was there the whole time and everyone was more concerned on dealing with their problems. Its not blaming anyone, they were hurt actually cause they loved her, but she was just put aside and that is just how she felt. An invisible ghost. As someone who has to deal with the same condition, I never saw depression so well portraited as in this show. It is so carefully made that hurts and heals at the same time. One of the best shows ever made. Sad yes, but so is life. But very thoughtfully and carefully crafted too. =] (off-topic: I see so many people hating Steve from the beggining. Its very nice to see someone seeing his side too. ;)) (off-topic2: This entirely episode was filmed in just 3 takes. If you notice, there is barly no cuts and the actores and crew had to move very fast and enter in the characters. Its technicly very impressive) (off-topic3: sorry for my bad English. I never studied the language. XD)

Fantastiske videoer! Skikkelig gøy! And there's also something about Nellie I want to add. You said you don't think they "decided to" take their own life. Yet it was suicide, right? One could argue that the ghosts are metaphores for mental illness. Nellie was haunted by the bent-neck lady for much of her life. She suddenly creeped up to her one night when she was little, and scared her. An image of herself with a broken neck. And she shows up at times when Nellie feels bad, like buying Luke drugs or when Arthur died. She did however leave when Nellie met Arthur, because she was happy. And sometimes she just shows up out of nowhere, scaring Nellie. When Nellie died, she became her. The thing that had always scared her. In my opinion this is quite clear, the bent-neck lady is a manifestation of suicidal thoughts, often scary and coming out of nowhere. They can haunt you, and for many they don't feel or seem like yourself, but as something other than you trying to hurt you. Most who have them don't want to have them, but get suicidal thoughts anyways. Often at night when you cant sleep, or when you feel depressed. Nellie was scared of her thoughts her whole life, and it haunted her. She lost to it, they won. So she did it to herself. She took her own life. But not because she decided too, it was out of her controll. I believe that's how many victims of suicide have it, and I think it's important in the context of changing the view of mental illness. People who commit suicide don't decide to die like it's easy and selfish. It's just as out of controll for them as it was for Nellie in real life, but with no ghosts. Sorry for the long comment, but living for the videos and this way of thinking about the message of the show I feel is important. Masse lykke til 👏👏👏

So many people give Steve so much hate because of the way he acts. Yes there are some things that make him a jerk. many people I’ve seen react to this show empathize so much towards the other siblings and with the dad but almost never to Steve. Steve is thinking rationally. Many people don’t believe in ghost and like he said he never saw anything in that house. Yea he blames his dad because he thinks his mom was sick and his dad didn’t help her and he wouldn’t explain, he refused to explain their whole lives what happened so like Steve said all he had to go off was what people wrote about them. Instead of believing in ghost he believes that his family is sick that there is something wrong with them and that no one is acknowledging it or dealing with it. So when he finally confronts his dad asking him what he knows and the dad blames the house I think it’s rational for him to be angry, because in his eye the dad is shifting blame to something that sounds crazy. He had a close relationship with his dad and after that he didn’t they practically didn’t see him and well him shouting that at him was terrible but it was building up over time all the guilt, all of the resentment, all the pain of hugh essentially abandoning them because he in Steve’s eyes he sorta did in refusing to explain what happened and keeping the house. Steve is essentially terrified this “mental illness” that him and his family has

Olivia is acting particularly strangely in episode 5. Hazel Hill had a daughter, Jacqueline. That's her cup of stars. I think for Mike Flanagan, cup of stars symbolises death. He's an atheist, and he seems to subscribe to Carl Sagan's notion we're all just stardust, and that when we die, that's what we become, cf. Midnight Mass. So, drinking from a cup of stars means tasting of death. It's also a bit of foreshadowing. The old lady is Hazel Hill, whom Clara Dudley looked-after. Hazel's brother is William Hill, the tall ghost who haunted Luke for his hat. Hazel and William are the children of Jacob Hill. He built Hill House. Nellie was staying at the same hotel the family stayed at after fleeing Hill House. There's a direct link between Nellie taking psychotropic medications and Luke's addiction. If Nellie doesn't take her meds, Luke remains clean. Now that Nellie's dead, we presume Luke has conquered his addictions. There are quite a few recurrent motifs in the series. One is the color red, which can symbolise danger or love. Maybe even dangerous love? There's unknown menace of the Red Room. Ghost Olivia is wearing a red dress. The colour red appears throughout the series. It's important to mark it. Another motif is time. There are clocks, watches and the sound of ticking clocks. Also, the timeline of the series is non-linear. That's why the time motif. The House bends/breaks time and space. It can then rearrange time and space as it pleases. It's related to the Maze motif. There's the fixing motif. Hugh and Olivia fix houses; Steven fixes people who've seen ghosts by providing non-supernatural alternate explanations; Shirley fixes bodies and helps grieving families; Theo fixes disturbed children; Luke is trying to fix himself and Nell, along with Hugh, are trying to fix the family. Nell and Hugh are probably the most unselfish members of the family. This may be why they've been able to remain close to one another. They certainly have the tenderest interactions. Recall what happened at 3 after the hour, all the surviving siblings clutched their necks. When Steve told Luke that Nell was dead, Luke made a motion towards his neck. They all supernaturally sensed how Nell died. While the family does suffer from PTSD-like trauma, clearly something supernatural is happening. Another motif is the come home motif. It may be the most concerning of all. Notice how the House seduces poor Nellie by giving her everything she's ever wanted. Dreams/waking-up is another important motif. Now that Luke is clean, he's starting to see things clearly for the first time, and he doesn't wear glasses anymore. 😉 In episode 6, Steve sees his mother's ghost by the casket and coming down the aisle. Of course, he just thinks he cracking-up. It's mental illness. It was a nice touch that Hugh saw his children as children when he first saw them after a long separation. I think parents always see their children as children no matter how old they are. As a widower's coping mechanism, Hugh sees Olivia, but it's just his imagination and him talking to himself. However, Hugh also sees ghost Olivia (and other ghosts). It's easy to tell which Olivia is which. The House is able to bend/break time and space. I think both storms were localised to where the Crains were. Ghost Olivia put the buttons on Nellie's eyes. Recall from a previous episode Nellie collected buttons and Olivia would give her buttons. In this case, the buttons may be a reference to the ancient Greek/Roman custom of burying the dead with coins to pay Charon, the ferryman, for passage across the River Styx. In times past in England and other European countries, coins might be placed on the eyes of the dead to keep them closed because it was believed that if the eyes of the deceased would open, the dead would look for someone to accompany them in death. We know Olivia is sensitive, like her children, she's felt and seen things in the House almost from the beginning. When Olivia put the shawl on in a previous episode she saw the three Hill children: Jacqueline (Hazel's daughter), another girl (William's daughter) and a boy in a wheelchair (William's son). Hazel and William are Jacob Hill's children. Jacob Hill built the House and had the dogs, whom Hazel killed. Hazel Hill was the elderly lady on the bed that Olivia saw. Olivia also saw William's son in the wheelchair. The boy in the wheelchair is who bangs on the walls. William is the tall spectre who haunts Luke and wears the bowler hat. In this episode, I think all the kids saw the ghost dogs, except perhaps Nellie. They've certainly all heard them. So, all the Crains have seen ghosts before they left Hill House. Nellie wants the family to reconcile. Her casket fell because the Steve and Hugh et al. were arguing. Nell doesn't like that. There's really no point in Hugh telling Steve what happened that night until Steve is ready to listen and not just dismiss what Hugh has to say as delusion born of mental illness. Is it possible Nellie was haunted by the bent-neck lady because she was trying to warn her younger self? "The wrong parent died." Steven, Steven, what a horrible thing to say! It does go to the root of Steven's problem, though. Steve, who used to be such a sweet boy and was very close to his dad, blames his dad for his mother's death and for having to live with Aunt Janet. As an adult, Steve should realise that Hugh acted appropriately that last night. Actually, Hugh's behaviour was exemplary. The safety of children is the first priority. Hugh removed the children from the source of danger, then went back for Olivia, but he wasn't able to save her for whatever reason. All the children, except Nellie, blamed their father for what happened, but not as deeply as Steven. In a way, Steven is the most affected and tormented, he just submerges everything because he's in denial.

After this last episode at the latest, even the last one should have finally understood that the bend neck lady Nell doesn't do anything to anyone. She wants to make herself noticed. Nell intervenes when the family argues. The fact is, no ghost has done anything bad so far. They are standing, just walking around. They are only present. Nell, like Theo, has a gift. She foresees her own death and since Luke is her twin and they have the twin thing, she also foresees his death. The difference to theo is that Nell doesn't know that she has this gift and so she thinks she sees a ghost. But she has visions.

One of the things that catches my attention in this Masterpiece of a show is how old actor Timithy Hutton has aged. Believe it or not, back in the 1980s He was voted the Most sexist and available guy in Hollywood. He was on the cover of nearly every Woman's Magazine! And every guy in America was jealous of him from the attention he got from women! Today, you wouldn't recognize him from any guy on the street.

@@karinaramirez7353 Steve doesn't know he's in a story with ghosts and the supernatural. He only thinks that his mother was mentally ill. It's like people who blame Nell's doctor for giving her bad advice. But that was good advice that he gave her - to go back to the house and confront her fears. It wasn't his fault that he didn't know he was in a story with ghosts.

It's easy for us to judge Steve bcoz we have all the perspectives and know that the Hillhouse is something supernatural. But through his eyes, his mom was mentally ill and his dad didn't give her any sort of treatment. Also after so many years the Dad hasn't said anything about the last night or how their Mom died. Not only all that, the Dad has been absent for most of childhood and their adult lives which sucks bcoz he was now their only parent. So yes it was harsh what he said but I get his POV.

The one thing - the ONLY thing - that bothered me about this series was adult Nell and adult Luke. It's just so obvious that there is a huge age gap.
