I do find it funny that "Emma tries to turn Rumble into a true hero " was the first step of teenager me giving up on the show. Like I have no clue what happens in the second part of the season because I gave up. In retrospect I'm surprised that my bouncing off point wasn't also "hey we're doing frozen now" because that was the start of the end of my enjoyment. Edit: Actually I remember now that the final straw was Rumble still being the dark one at the end of the storyline, because it felt like my time was being horribly wasted and tbh I was right to think that! My personal interpretation/head canon was that using the dagger FORCES The Dark One to come forth, but at any given time anyone who invokes the True Name Of The Dark One (TM) is sort of like... Drawing attention to themselves? As in it doesn't MAKE The Dark One appear, it just gets their attention and then they can choose to show up or not. Think old fae rules of invoking names.Thus Bell doesn't use that method when she needs to track Rumple down because it's effectively the same as calling his phone and girl knows he'd just send her to voicemail.

Regarding summoning the Dark One, I think the only guaranteed way to do it is with the dagger. But if you attract the attention of the Dark One enough, they could show up at their own discretion. Since the true name of the Dark One is generally a well kept secret, saying their true name (Emma Swan) repeatedly probably attracted her attention enough, and she chose to appear to Henry. That's my headcanon at least lmao

My interest in the show was really waning at the end of s4 (because as I have said before and will never stop saying I LIKE THE FROZEN ARC), but then the Dark Swan cliffhanger really got me. I was so stoked to see evil Emma! People on tumblr were making all this cool fanart of what her Dark One look might be, there was so much interesting meta!...and then the show was like "what if we just did nothing interesting with that, and instead introduced SO MANY NEW CHARACTERS AND ALSO THE GIRL FROM BRAVE IS HERE FOR NO REASON".
