I do a walk around Central Market. The Central Market building is a Grade 3 Historic building from 1939, and the only intact Bauhaus building left in HK, also described as Streamline Moderne style, which is Art Deco from the 1930s. It was built solely for the purpose of being a wet market and at one point was the largest meat market in the whole of Asia, but over time it fell into disuse and closed completely in 2003, save for the 24 hour walkway joining the IFC to the Mid-Levels escalators. For almost 20 years it was practically an abandoned building, and was put on the list by the HK Gov to be demolished, but was then rescued because a famous architect recognised it as a Bauhaus building, and it was then handed over to the Urban Renewal Authority, who then leased it to Chinachem to rejuvenate it. And the result is what is seen in the video, where the building has been preserved along with some key elements within the building, most notably the staircase and the open air courtyard, but also some stalls and things like a brick wall and concrete columns. It's no longer a wet market, but now a kind of trendy eco-conscious contemporary shopping mall space with a mixture of different types of shops and eateries ranging from quirky to boutiquey to established, with a leaning towards small HK businesses. Communal spaces are often used to host events for the community. There are QR codes all over which you can scan to find out more about specific architectural features. I also walk through the 24 hour walkway leading to the escalators, which leads up to the renovated Tai Kwun building up the slope.
