Is this Medan’s newest mall? We are not sure, but it is super clean and has that new feel to it. Join us as we go in search of dinner and a movie! We find a great sushi restaurant that has something for all of us. As you will notice the movie idea doesn’t work out for us, so the kids lead to another favorite of theirs: an arcade! On the way, Forest finds his own little kids' play area called KiDiZilla. Wait until you see how much fun Forest has here! We love walking the streets in search of street food, but we also enjoy switching things up. It was awesome to hear Granite ask about ‪@Dale_Philip‬ at (7:00)

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. We hope that our travels will inspire and provide our children with the confidence to meet new people, try new foods, and enjoy learning a new language. Hello. It's interesting for me to watch KZbinrs pass through places I am familiar with and see it through their eyes, but I have to say that the first minute when you were talking to the Becak driver was a bit painful. You should know by now that the level of English in Indonesia is generally not fantastic and that outside of tourist spots you can probably assume that drivers won't speak much - if any. If you don't know the numbers in Indonesian then it's best to wave a note at them or use a calculator on the phone to avoid misunderstandings. You were also talking to them using connected speech which didn't help. They often try to rope in someone younger like that who they think has better English, but they may not or can't help because you are talking fast in an unfamiliar accent. Learning a bit of the language (numbers are a good start) is the way to go, but even then confusion can occur due to the foreigners low level / pronunciation etc. You mentioned Dale Philip.. Dale jabbers at the locals in a mix of (yeah he is trying a bit, but still very) broken Indonesian and English in a Scottish accent which creates some quite comic situations at times, but I do sometimes sympathise with the locals he interacts with. He actually got a discount in a mall the other day due to miscommunication and giving some poor girl a headache. Ironically, the local in the vid may get then stick from Indonesians in the comments about their poor level of English. Of course language barriers will occur, but travelers can minimise the effect in some ways. That might sound obvious / easier said than done when not on the spot, but it is a pattern I've noticed recently, so I thought I'd mention it. Happy Travels.

I think it's very important for us to speak the local language than have locals speak english. We really like Medan, and found the people there to be so helpful and friendly. I recommend you to visit lake Toba and Samosir island, in the center of lake. That's a cultural epicentrum of Batak tribes.. You can see a lot of Rumah Bolon (Batak traditional house), visiting ancient graveyard, join local people to do "Tor-tor dance", and see beautiful scenery of mountainous area.. 👍👍😊 Horas, Mejuah - juah 🇮🇩🇮🇩

In Centre Point Actually there is more food court on the Downstairs you can ask the Security about Lotte mart when you go to the Lotte mart you will find more food court. oh yeah i recommeded your family if you are still in medan Go to the Delipark Mall its more broad but the food is more expensive😁👍🏻

Good mall in medan: center point mall, sun plaza medan, deli park mall (the newest one). From your hotel to sun plaza/deli park i suggest you to take grab car/gojek (car) since pedestrian walk is very hard to find Medan :") Best street food in medan: agam noodle, komdak nasi goreng (fried rice), satay padang and satay kacang ( you can find them everywehere, there's also one in komdak (little India). Satay padang is a lil bit spicy,satay kacang is more suitable for kids. Another street food: mie rebus Medan, es campur medan (sweet icy kind of drinks), gado-gado (indonesian salad), Nelayan (indo-chinese food where dimsum/dumplings is their speciality,must try, you can find them in Sun Plaza Mall, Deli Park Mall, Center Point Mall). Ayam Penyet (chicken fried) Joko Solo, Surabaya Ayam Penyet, is a cheap tasty regular meal you can find in Medan. While in north sumatera, if you still have more days, Berastagi and Toba Lake is a must visit place. Took 1.5-2 hrs by car for Berastagi, and 4 hrs to Lake Toba. You have to stay at hotel if you go there, so many to explore especially in Lake Toba. Another great place where tourist can play with elephant and explore the forest: Tangkahan, 4-4.5 hrs by car. Hope you& your familyenjoy ur time in Medan!
