Most of the minority facilities are illegally provided for political gain. Buodh, Jain, Sikh are not seperate identity but they saw muslim even being more in population, to be benifitted, they demanded minority status for them. That is why now Lingait claimed minority status. The main problem is basis of minority status has not been defined in constitution. The vote bank policy kept muslims focused. Now question has been raised that Hindus being lesser in 8 states are being treated as majority and are being denied of minority benifit and mojority religeous groups in those states are getting minority benifit which doesnot look rationale. Again up to what % of a population shoud be granted minority status. Muslims even being 14-18% in country basis are given minority status. Is that rational? Now it has to be desided by Supreme Court. I am not informed what is the latest position. Once % and geographical basis is desided much of the problem will be solved.

I was of the opinion from the introduction of the speaker that I would come to know something informative but I am utterly disappointed. I am so disappointed that I stopped watching the video after 9.31. The video opens with the classification of 'Hindus' according to the Constitution as per the speaker. What he is citing as reference is basically the 'Hindu Marriage Act' of 1955. When you are defining a religion on the basis of Constitution or an Act you must remember it is for the legal purposes. In which case though the person may not be of 'Hindu' religion (may be Sikh/Buddhist) but this particular law will be applicable to him/her. Secondly he is kind of endorsing by quoting British ethnographers/administrators the idea that-"the entire Indian society is animistic". With the magnificent pillars of deep philosophy in Hinduism do you really feel Hinduism is nothing more than 'Animism'? Or there is no sharp distinction between Hinduism and Animism, as Herbert Hisley says? While framing a faulty framework the speaker forgot that there is no person by the name Herbert Hisley it is actually Herbert Hope Risley. I know why this kind of mistake happens, this happens when you are desperately looking trying to cherry pick lines quoted by someone, without knowing anything about his work except a one line introduction.

Thr constitution was a continuation of British laws. They termed all non Christians, non Muslims et al as Hindus. So trials have no choice. They don't belong to Hindus in the strict sense. Basava removed himself from Hindu cult to form a separate religion and to this day Lingayats are fighting for a separate religion. Does the Ghar wapsi programe promise all trials coming back be kept equal to higher caste of Hindus or just to their 'respect' position. Conversion may be a poison, but these upper class Hindus are only shedding crocodile tears. They will not do anything useful to tribals. In TN, many say their faith is not Hindu and their gods been usurped by caste Hindus like Murugan, Valli, Shiva (vedam mentions about Rudra only), Kottravai, Karuppu etc. It is unlikely the present dispensation wd do anything useful to tribals except treating them as Hindu vote banks.

A lot of migrations did take place into India you need to understand that, the tribals have lived here before the times of the caste system and have their own culture, beliefs that may have some common elements with "Hinduism" as Hinduism absorbed some of their beliefs and vice versa over centuries. You can't really equate Sanatan Dharma with tribal religion and Hinduism practiced in different parts of India, Hinduism itself is not a religion but something that was formed over a long period of time due to mixing of beliefs (both peacefully and agressively) . Us Brahmins cannot comment on what is good for tribals or what is not, they have the right to protect their own beliefs from both the RSS as well as other missionaries.

In my writings on Vedic history, I refer to the Purus (the Vedic Aryans) and other people as "tribes". The word "tribe" is not a negative word. All castes were "tribes" to begin with till urban civilization made most of the tribes into castes within the varnavyavastha. Those who remained in isolated areas (hills, forests, coastal villages) continued to be "tribes". If you are drawing a distinction between "tribe" and "tribal", I did not think of it in that sense. As I said above, in the context of their particular areas being sought nowadays to be stolen from them in the name of "development", even the word adivasi is acceptable so far as those particular areas are concerned.

Shrikant Talageri Shrikant Talageri the word tribal is synonymous with jungli, that would be translation in Hindi. Meaning people who live in mountains, and forests away from the "industrialized" world. They are farmers, woodcutters and work and business thats is suited in those areas. Now to refer to them as jungali /"tribal" is derogatory. I dont think they consider themselves jungali/tribal and I dont think others should either. You referred people in Manipur , Nagaland, and Mirozam, Meghaliya, and Arunanchal as "purely tribal" /"poora jungli"which I dont think they refer to themselves as that. It's calling their way of living primitive. In that case every farmer in the world is a tribal. I dont think farmers would appreciate that and therefore its unfair to call someone tribal on basis of their way of living. I have met the people of Assam the so called tribal and they dont call themselves that. I know the argument you are making with people who are easily converted to Christianity but to call them jungali/tribal in today's context is unwarranted.

Tribes are not hindus. Tribes are homogeneous community. All tribes have distinct culture and language. There is no dirty caste structure in their society. Hinduism's main pillar is the caste, the four varnas. Only Brahmin performs puja in Sanskrit. In tribal society its own tribal headman performs puja, in his own tribal language, which is Sacrosanct, not Sanskrit. Tribes are Nature worshippers, not idol worshippers. Tribals treat caste people as outsiders. Santhals call outsiders as dikkus. For a tribe it hardly matters, you are from which caste. All four castes are the same for the tribals. The caste high and low between the castes are hindus permutations and combinations. For anyone who are outside the caste for them it hardly matters. Tribals fought their own battles. British India is replete with tribal revolts. The first major armed tribal revolt was the Santhal rebellion of 1855 before the 1857 revolt. Caste people or so called Rajputs did not fight for them. Tribals never accepted the subjugation of outsiders unlike others. Tribals are king of forest and have proud ancestry, but don't discriminate people in terms of high and low. Why should tribe accept Hinduism and brand itself with caste identity where he will loose his self respect?

Adivasis CANNOT be called Hindus at all. It is for this precise reason that the Constitution of India recognises them as “ Scheduled Tribes” ie, a community/ group distinct from Hindus / Muslims / Sikhs/ Buddhists/ Christians. I see that a few of the answers here have confused the issue by stating that Hindu is a geographical marker and therefore ST are Hindu. Yes it definitely WAS a geographical marker when the word Hindu was coined around 2000 years ago. However for the last at least 500 years a “tribal” identity has been recognised in India as separate from the Hindu caste system. I come from Udaipur in Rajasthan. The city is surrounded by tribal areas/ districts. The difference in beliefs , customs and rituals of the ST and Hindus is very clear. The ST do not follow Hinduism. Traditional Hindu society itself does not consider them to be a part of any of the 4 castes. There are significant number of Adivasies who do not wish or like to be recognised / identified as hindues (other than converted or diverted Tribes / Adivasies). Also there are several documentary evidence stating Adivasies are not Hindu / not Muslim / not Sikh / not Christian / not Jain / not Parsi (until & unless they get converted or diverted) ..In this secular country Adivasies have every right to be recognised as they wish (Indian constitution allows this, even though some religious based & biased may not allow this constitutional right to be alloted to them easily)
