I have now watched dozens of John's lectures and am in awe of his intelligence and skill as a lecturer. It seems to me he must be one of those rare people who can recall literally almost everything he has ever read. He also seems like he's a genuinely kind and humble guy on top of all that!

@4:24 the axe in the fasces was only used when the magistrate was outside the pomeria: the boundery of Rome, never inside the pomeria. the Field of Mars, originally a practice field had many buildings with important functions but was outside the boundery. Also a Roman citizen could not be flogged like a slave, but he could be whipped and for that punishment the lictor unbound his fasces and used a rod from it. @24:17 Oidipous Tyrannos is the play written by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex is Latin version Seneca wrote. In both cases is means Oedipus the King. And that lady reminds me of me in my schoolday: always interrupting the history teacher with things I knew better.

"Superbus" had different meanings in latin, and although one can find latin texts where "superbus" is used in the sense of "proud", the common meaning of this word is "arrogant". This semantic dychotomy still exists today in Italian. So you can find "superbo" in sentences like "hai fatto un lavoro superbo" means "you have done an excellent job", Whilst "hai un atteggiamento superbo" means "you have an arrogant demeanor" and not "you have an excellent demeanor". For italian scholars the meaning of "superbus" (when associated to tarquinus) will always be arrogant a not proud. Which IMHO explains better why the romans stripped him of his power and throw him out of the city.

This is kind of funny because "proud" used to have the meaning of "arrogant" back when English scholars settled on that translation for "superbus". That's why we have the quote "pride goeth before destruction" in the KJV that I've actually heard quoted by Pride March counter-protesters because they misunderstand the original context. It's another case of English language evolution "softening" the meaning of a word, like how "terrible" used to mean able to inspire terror.

Without meaning to sound overly akshually- i find the introductory point on architecture a bit of a stretch. Look at the parliament buildings of south Africa, india, stormont(northern ireland) and to a lesser extent the old Australian parliament to see that many british colonial government buildings were very classically influenced. Indeed the palace of Westminster itself has been dedcribed as classical /palladian in plan- with gothic ornamentation - with barry doing so to fit better with incorporating westminster hall. Not to detract at all from the central point that the US sought conciously to classical illusions- its just others did so also, and it was as much about the style of the architect /context and time as to what extent this was dominant

Given that some sort of large-scale altercation in the US seems all but inevitable, consider a lecture on Social Collapse on KZbin that posits that a general social failure in the US will likely be (much) worse on citizens than the fall of the Soviet Union was on the Russian people. Reasons given were, Russian cities are more compact, with more public transportation, families live together albeit in crowded conditions and have had the right to a living space with low or no rent, a greater probability of knowing their neighbors (because of less opportunities to move around), and a tradition of having small gardens, less dependence on cars, etc. Society in the US is less cohesive, people don't know neighbors well, cities and suburbs are spread out, public transportation has been largely abandoned in favor of cars, food and other essentials are less available locally, there are more guns in the US than people and so on. The American tradition of self-reliance, which was very strong in the 19C, has been traded for greater dependence on corporations, and since 1980 there has been a progressive worsening of extreme economic inequality, etc. Many people in the Roman Empire, except for people living in Rome itself, lived on farms and so could in theory survive regime changes fairly well. Their situation seems much closer to the Russian case than would pertain in the US. The extreme violence of the American Civil War was largely because of the polarization over the issue of slavery and an unwillingness to compromise. Despite initial enthusiasm on both sides, the War dragged on and on, during which some 650,000+ men died (a large percent of a whole generation), as well as massive destruction and dislocations of all kinds, and a legacy of distrust an division that survives until today. The effect of social collapse now would be catastrophic. The clogging of the supply chain in Fall of 2121 is the sort of problem that presages problems. And this is all during an epidemic of unknown but worsening extent...

The Grachii were the first of what were later called the "Populari". Gaius Marius was a Populari. That is, a Populist political leader. Someone who promoted the "popular" working-man's rights, whether genuinely or cynically. When Trump ran, he was a social elite who appealed to Populist sentiment - that is, you were more likely to vote for him over Hillary if you didn't have a college degree, worked blue-collar, etc. etc. The entanglement of inequality, resultant Populism, and military service, all worked together to undercut the republic. Also, the corruption of the nobles, and the eventual cynicism with which later Populari adapted to survive, all contributed. Julius Caesar was of the same stripe as Gaius Marius. Think of it -- the cult of personality that made sure you and yours had bread at night. So when he was murdered, even though he was a tyrant by our own standards, the poor wept. Crazy complex stuff. Interesting note, the loyalties question was preempted by the Founding Fathers. When you join the military in the USA you swear an oath to the Constitution -- not to the President. That way no one (in theory) might become Imperator.
@johnmichaelcule8423
@johnmichaelcule8423 2 жыл бұрын
I rather think that the core inspiration of the US Constitution was not Roman but British or rather a reworked version of the British parliamentary system that took more seriously than the British did the criticisms and theoretical models produced after the Wars of the three Kingdoms (as historians are nowadays calling the 'English Civil War'). The primary philosophical point was the need for a clear central sovereignity (an idea that wasn't around until after the Thirty Years War) with clear and multiple controls on it. The Presidential Veto is Roman in derivation, yes, but the idea of separation of powers is a theoretical construct that was created to say how the Parliament was supposed to work which never got taken entirely seriously in Britain. The Senate may be Roman in name but its functions (including the impeachment process) derive more from the House of Lords than Americans like to think. I think that the major difference between Rome and the US was the comparative simplicity of the system. There was one legislature, with pretty clearly defined differences between the two chambers rather than the mess of three assemblies and an advisory Patrician Senate. There were also a few steps to prevent the known flaws with the Roman system, most notably the requirement for oaths to be taken to the Constitution rather than to individuals, that is to say to the continued existence of the Rule of Law as established. Thus preventing the emergence of any Marius, Sulla or Caesar figures. (Though some people tried anyway.) American conservatives, I have noticed, have a predeiliction for looking at the gloomy predictions of Roman conservatives and applying them to the final fate of the US. This is daft of them since it's arguable that the inability to change in a consistent way and the fetishisation of the way of their ancestors was what did for the Republic. Certainly, the Founding Fathers tended to agree with the Renaissance philosophers about the inevitable decay of all Conatitutions, especially those which let the Common People have any voice. If I were feeling gloomy about the future of the US Constiiution the feature that strikes me as easiest to abuse (the way that the Dictatorship was abused by Sulla and Caesar) is the possibility of calling a Constitutional Convention. It's the vaguest and least defined bit of the writing and could well be captured by a populist wave of people who have a conviction they know just what's wrong with the country and are determined not to let any objections stand in their way.

The architecture of Washington DC may be based upon the architecture of Rome. However, US criminal law is based primarily on British Common Law, whereas Europe, the Confederate States of America, and marital customs are based upon Roman Civil Law. Fully ⅓ of Roman Civil Law addresses the status of persons: who is free and who is not, and how one's status changes. Per Roman Civil Law, wives, children, animals, and slaves were part of a feeeman's estate. A male child was not free until he was permitted to establish his own estate. The status of a female child simply transferred from her father's estate to that of her husband. The dowery was essentially collateral that ensured that one's daughter would not be left destitute, if she were abandoned by her husband. Roman Civil Law also extensively dealt with inheritances. There were many ways that one could lose the free status, but once a slave, one could only regain a semblance of free, mostly through the largesse of one's owner. Since I studied this about 10 years ago, I may have erred in some of the details. The primary purpose of this post is to point out some basic differences between British Common Law and Roman Civil Law.

I'm not sure about the claim that you can call any state without a king a republic, from dictatorships to full participation democracies. As far as I know, a republic is a specific form of government in which the people directly elect representatives who then make the decisions for the state. I don't think either dictatorships or full participation democracies where the people vote on laws directly can be classified as republics. As far as the Canadian notwithstanding clause, I find it interesting that it's being invoked in order to reduce the size of government. So the people who are up in arms about it seem to me as an outsider looking in to be upset about someone using government power to reduce government power. It appears to be a bit of a strange controversy from my limited viewpoint. One annoying thing to me as an American, is when people from other countries criticize American defense forces abroad but won't defend themselves. If you don't like American troops in your nation and don't like the fact that you have no representation in American government, there's a a solution for you: hire your own soldiers, build your own tanks and planes, and pay for your own defense. The history rhyming quote is from Mark Twain.

It helps break up the monotony I think. Small dash of cynical/leaning-into-laconic attitude that both mildly ridicules the goofy nature of less advanced, yet very assertive peoples, and brings self-awareness to history as a barely-held-together best-guess forensic study. He also uses a lot of up-speak? Or turning his voice up at the end of every sentence? as if he’s asking a question? Both the laughs and the up-speak reflect the modern cynical view of institutions and the historical institutions that study them.

After this I saw in the night visions, and behold *a fourth beast* [Pagan Rome] dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another *little horn* before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the *eyes of man* and a mouth speaking great things. {Daniel 7:7-8} ... And the ten horns *out of this kingdom* are ten kings that shall arise: and another [Papal Rome] shall rise *after* them; and he shall be diverse (claiming authority over church and state craft; the spiritual sword and the temporal sword) from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. (The Heruli 493 A.D.; The Vandals 534 A.D.; The Ostrogoths 538 A.D.) And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and *think to change times and laws* and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. (Same dispensation of the time of the Gentiles; and the time of the two witnesses.) But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away *his* dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. {Daniel 7:24-26}

It won’t fall Roman republic was always an oligarchy right now it still is an oligarchy there was an attempt by one oligarch to size power but he was outmaneuverd/eliminated by the others who hanged up on him. The US will not fall like republic because the oligarchs are too strong and are not very divided and they control the media the institutions and everything and furthermore the scary part is they are not individuals but corporations more specifically powerful multinational companies worth several times the gdp of most countries around the world. Will US decline yes will Americans have less freedoms and rights yes wills e perhaps be more socialist on social issues yes but you can bet all of it will remain under the control of the multinational corporations because they control everything including both parties. So at worst US may not have same reach as the 90s but given it’s geography and neighbors it ain’t falling anytime soon ago a dictator unless somehow said dictator can take on all the MNCs and F500 American companies which is unliekly

Theology and Politics God resists the proud. Pride comes before a fall. God gives grace to the humble. USA still believe in America First and White Supremacy. China suffered a Century of Humiliation. Can these explain the direction of present day scenario?

America first means american tax dollars should go to benefit american citizens. Thats what the government is supposed to do. It has nothing to do with white supremecy. America first is also about standing up to a government who is full of internationalists and megacorporations working in tandum to gut the country of manufacturing, wealth, and independence as they get rich off the slave labor conditions on foreign soil. The white supremecy crap is a bunch of propaganda.

nb zz Nah. Trump’s America First is a foreign policy of American interest comes first irrespective what happens to other countries. He ranted to hoodwink Americans like you to think that everyone in the world is ripping off the USA and that it’s time for USA to get out of alliances, treaties, etc like nato, Iran nuclear treaty, Paris accord, WHO, etc,etc and wants to deglobalize. Do your research. How you can ever say it’s a domestic policy speaks volumes about your blinded by propaganda. But the rest of the world knows it has always been America First..(=USA wins, you lose) Stop watching only Fox News and msm.Get the unpleasant truth by listening to people like Professor Richard Wolff, Professor Jeffrey Sachs , Chris Hedges or George Galloway. Remember , truth hurts but ultimately heals.

First of all I’d say that you are the one blinded by propaganda if you believe that in America we have a difference between Republicans & Democrats. We do NOT, we have 2 wings that control the bird, the bird being the elite. Our entire government has become extremely corrupt & I think it’s safe to say that world governments are corrupt. Governments no longer serve their citizens they serve a global master. If de globalization were actually on the table then I’m all for that. I have no desire to be ruled/controlled by a select few who enact laws based on enriching the few who unlike what you believe are quite United no matter which country they reside. Their citizenship is currency, power, & control. Have you noticed essentially all world leaders spouting the exact same phrase? Have you noticed who that comes from? Not any elected figure started this, the World Economic Forum. If we as a species, as human beings can not come together and stop these globalists pigs from gaining all the control that they seek we will be in your global wet dream where we are controlled by what the powers that shouldn’t be decide we should have; little to no meat (for the planet of course), you will own nothing & be happy (no car-public transport, no land-apt towers or tiny homes), you will not be allowed to speak negatively about ANY gov leader (censorship already rampant), allotment of carbon points (you travel when they say you can). All while these bastards own most of the land, fly private jets, have multiple homes on all continents, eat like kings & queens, create/control all tech, media, entertainment. Don’t you see? Saving the planet for these people in particular means saving it for them not for you. We need compassionate leaders, we need accountability across this globe. There are enough resources for this to be possible except the ones who control these do NOT want to share, they want to insure their futures at the expense of the bulk of humanity. That is this globalization you speak of, it’s not equity in the terms that I think you believe. The current rulers are not good people, you can’t fall into the traps they’ve set & by spouting your trump bs proves that you see one of these sides as good & the other as bad. We the people have got to unite because their divide & conquer is going just as they’ve planned.
