This video is a follow up on my 3 part series on building a Honda GX 120cc motorized bike. Many of you may remember that in part 3 I decided to switch from using a centrifugal clutch to using a cvt torque converter. In this video I will explain their differences as well as my personal opinions of the two and why I decided to switch.

For the belt: that system is super common (in Europe) for all scooters. That belt usually last, if in a closed system like yours, 40 to 80k Kilometers (50k miles). That stuff is super strong

I like how much you put into this video but I also think you need to try that centrifugal clutch with better gear ratio... I feel like what was happening was you weren’t getting enough rpm to consistently engage the clutch... I think you should tinker with ratios and see if you can get it to work better

Bought a minibike to putter around the yard, mostly. The original centrifugal clutch worked well but had that on-off characteristic to it. Not jerky, but when you're only wanting to go less than 10mph around the yard it's super annoying needing to modulate speed with constant on/off throttle adjustments. That alone convinced me to switch to a torque converter. Well, that and the fact that the jackshaft's axle was defective and disintegrated its woodruff key with less than 10 hrs on the bike, rendering the bike motionless. I'd also read you're supposed to regularly oil the outside of a centrifugal clutch where it bolts on, which wasn't going to happen much. I like the inherent simplicity of centrifugal clutch setup, just not for my bike.

7:1 ratio is the best I found out so far for 100kmh top speed on a 50cc kids quad 208cc engine swap with centrifugal clutch($35-$75). and buddy had the cvt($350-$400) and he has take off but no top end speed ghe tops out at 75kmh. and I just fly on by onb my 11occ kids quad engine swapped to a 420cc centrifugal clutch. sound like he needs to cut the spring 4 links shorter or gear ratio is to low. and it's trying to stall it. if you are lazy like me. throw a little bit of oil on it and go. it's stop the choppy till the oil dries up. which should take several days or 3 hrs of hard riding. and his chain was to tight!!!!!!!!

Yes that's what I used to do until I got my horstman put together. Just spray a few drops of non teflon lubricant of your choice in between the clutch pads and the clutch bell ( outside part that the chain is connected to). No more chatter and great stall. You will feel when you need a few more drops.

The engine is a Predator 212cc it's output shaft has a 3/4" diameter output and only GasBike.com and Kings Bikes.com have the CVT that has the extended sprocket on the back of the mounting plate. I did find a vendor selling the CVT on Ebay and it was cheaper in price than the above vendors. I have that CVT and it is the same unit and it is ok. There is a add-on sleeve that will work on a 5/8" output shaft but remember, I suspect that the CVT will use some HP just to operate so if putting it on a 79cc engine the engine should be modified for performance.

Is it possible to build a CVT torque converter that doesn't use a belt or any computers, and looks just like a normal centrifugal clutch on the outside? I'm basically trying to build a chain-drive race car with an automatic "3-speed" on the front (technically more than 3), driving a manual 8-speed on the back. And the automatic portion is meant to be in disguise (the rules say you must have a manual 8-speed transmission, but they don't say anything about having two transmissions.) My motivation for deceptive engineering is to be competitive against established outfits in a situation where my resources are very tight, and to be very innovative in spite of those limitations (and unnecessarily strict technical regulations.)

No, my bike can roll pretty easily with the cvt, however when I'm rolling down a hill at around 25 mph it will start to get tight and act as an engine break which I actually like. Not sure why your cvt won't let you roll the bike around especially at low speeds without locking up.

Clutches have been used successfully on mini bikes and go karts for decades. The reason you were getting clutch chatter is your gearing. And you are lucky that you didn't buy an expensive clutch because it would also chatter due to your gearing. For a clutch to work properly on a tall tire bicycle you would need at least 9/1 gearing or more. The torque converter works better because in low the ratio starts at 2.7/1. Say you had 10 tooth with a 40 tooth sprocket. This would equal a 10.8/1 numeric ratio. Much better with your tall tire. The same sprocket count with a clutch would be terrible. The gearing is just way off. The torque converter you have is not made specifically for a Predator. It is universal and can be used on many engines that have a 3/4" PTO. And they have had much more power put on them than a stock 212 without breaking. It's all about gearing.
@BenCarano
@BenCarano 3 жыл бұрын
Yah, gearing is a big part of it! That's probably why it works successfully on vehicles with smaller tires. That's definitely a big part of why I went with the torque converter because when it engages it starts out in a lower gear ratio
@Deucealive75
@Deucealive75 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenCarano Makes me wonder how it works for you on the other end, meaning top end. Once the belt shifts to "high" the ratio turns into .9/1 which is overdrive. The thing that happens is that ratio kills the engine. It stops pulling and RPM will not increase. This is normal even on mini bikes with pretty good gearing. I'm wondering how dramatic it is on your setup?

@offroadfts
@offroadfts 2 ай бұрын
I'll try to help ya out a bit...the 1" and 3/4" refers to the shaft size diameter on your engine. Youd have to measure the one on your engine and see what ya need. 35, 41/40, are chain sizes and again you might have to take some measurements if there aren't markings on your chain. "10t" and "12t" refer to the amount of teeth on the sprocket/gear that the chain rides on. The lower the number the more torque (lower gearing) but less top speed. the higher the number the higher your top speed (higher gearing) but you lose low end torque. Which one you want to use depends on what you want to do and how many "teeth" are on the rear sprocket. Some kits come with both and you can change em out to fit your needs. Sprockets are easy to get and replace. The important thing to get right is shaft size and chain size.

yes, cost wise though to buy a clutch that would not bind up it would cost me close to $450 and so for half the price I could get a torque converter that fit perfectly, and gives a little more power in the end

@@BenCarano Thanks Benjamin - even though I'm old enough to be your grandfather :-) I'm a total noob at this and appreciate your expertise! One thing I've been struggling with is forward reverse gearing - had a look at a couple of ATV ones that fit these 'Honda' motors and they look like a recipe for disaster in a boat with a long (2metre) drive shaft so appreciate any advice if there may be other options if you've time. Main issue is with reliability as critical for a boat, whereas you can just catch a bus if the bike breaks down. Awesome bike BTW - is it hard to stop?
@BenCarano
@BenCarano 3 жыл бұрын
@@AusMarineRobotics With the gearing I have run into the same problem with all the ones I found looking like they were cheaply made and wouldn't be very reliable. However, that was over a year ago when I built my bike, and since then a lot has come out on the market so there might be a better one available now, I just haven't looked in a while. I'll let you know if I come across a good one though. As for the bike it was a bit hard to stop, and since the video I have upgraded to hydraulic brakes and that is much better. Your boat project sound cool man! I hope it turns out well for you!

@@BenCarano Thanks Benjamin - have decided to go for the torque converter now (and buy a torque wrench!) Unfortunately I have just ordered one of those cheap and nasty ones you warn about :-) As I'm sticking to standard parts I should be able to replace it with a more expensive US one I saw if this design works out.

@greggreaves1727
@greggreaves1727 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenCarano yeah, max-torque clutches are bi-directional. When I used to race karts we used Noram clutches and they definitly weren't. Not sure who makes your clutch - whether it is a max-torque or clone. On the noram, you could tell because the guide on which the shoes slid out was on an angle. That angle had to be facing in the direction of rotation or it would bang and be very jerky. you may be able to reverse the innards of the clutch and give it a try. However, with your torque converter working so well, why bother.
@BenCarano
@BenCarano 3 жыл бұрын
@@greggreaves1727 Yah that's a good point! I do still love the torque converter and it's already been working for a year, but reversing the innards of the clutch might actually work, I never thought of that; because I need the clutch and sprocket themselves to be in that specific orientation to line up.

@@BenCarano it's nice you were able to find a torque converter designed for that chain so close to the frame. if there's a plastic guard available, i'd look at putting that over the tq. i am trying to find a solution to my problem - i've built electric gokart and CVT would be awesome if i could get engagement at 0 RPM. @BenCarano
@BenCarano 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't know if I can be of much help other than to suggest putting a stronger motor in it. Usually with electric motors like you said there are no transmissions because they have enough torque to start from a dead stop. I'm not sure if a torque converter will solve that.
@streetK4
@streetK4 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenCarano well power is sufficient it's just not enough rpm. I'm trying to race this thing and if could get decent acceleration and not bad of top end this would be sweet. Decent acceleration meaning i can peel off the line but in my case top speed is limited to 38mph. And then if i want top speed it will be slow off the line i think if i can modify it, it would work great
@str8xrippin
@str8xrippin 3 жыл бұрын
@@streetK4 okay so you say your problem is acceleration, well if we look at simple solutions I would advise a gearbox. You can make one yourself it's pretty simple. Or you could go with a 2 phase belt drive which should give you slightly better acceleration. You've got a few options so keep researching. And I'm working on a hybrid bike with a 390cc 14hp engine plus a 1.25 kw electric motor which adds up to about 19hp. I would love to race you😏

@@streetK4 alright mate if you really can't do anything about it then more power is a simple solution and is gonna work great, also reduce weight where you can so you get more work per kg/lb. I think if you can up the power to about 50% more which should put you at 18kw that would be the best

Not to mention the belt provides cushion on the drive train.. which translates to smoother "not completely smooth" but smoother take off & acceleration.. THAT BEING SAID... There's also more spinning peaces..🤔🤭😩!! Which means MORE has to happen for take off..🤧 Centrifugal & chain set-up is rough because there's no cushion. Less moving parts = a hard hitting take off.. less to maintain.. less bearings.. less that can go wrong.. Torque converters are pricey and cumbersome.. "juggernaut" lol.. Centrifugal clutches are cheap and get the job done.. I'd say put the two setups on two engines that are built the same.. same everything.. rider weight.. everything & send em'..
