As an ALCOhalic, I find this 6-part series to be the saddest ending to a love story. Thank you for this classic series.

You're welcome. The Epilogue section cuts the deepest. The good news is that we covered them in all their glory, so their legacy is preserved even though none of the CNW C628s made it to actual preservation. RR

I've loved Alcos since I was a kid in Michigan and saw the last of the Alcos on the LSRC. Great series, loved watching it!

I enjoyed the whole series and was as sad for it to end as the demise of the last big ALCOs.

You can still see a few "big" Alcos running on eastern shortlines. If you have some free time, seek them out. The are worth the trip. RR

The Delaware Lackawanna in PA is one of, if not the last railroad using 6-axle Alco and MLW locomotives. The Western NY & Pennsylvania also has some ex Cartier M636s on their property, but they've mostly been sidelined by the "new" AC6000s.

Bowser makes a HO scale High-Hood CNW C628. They are excellent models. Stewart, which Bowser bought, also made basically the exact same model. The Stewarts are probably a bit cheaper than the Bowsers. RR

I just am just putting the finishing touches on a couple C628 low nose Stewart hobbies loco's for my HO layout. Great video also!
@EastEndProductionsArchiv-lm3lq Жыл бұрын
@@Paul070 Thank you! I hope you have better luck with the Stewart drives and tracking issues than I did. My Stewart C628s are just like the real ones, heavy maintenance required, and they are always derailing. The Bowser ones are not much better. RR

I enjoyed the six parts to read on the the big locos and the company that ran it and how strong the ore industry was back in the day boy but that ain't the case anymore. I'm assuming all those those elkos are just rotting away somewhere and back in those years those engines were not electronically controlled right is that why they had to have engineers in the two engines behind the lead engine.
@EastEndProductionsArchiv-lm3lq Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, all the CNW Alco C628s have been scrapped. It would have been nice if at least one of them was saved as they are the only examples of High-Hood C628s built. The CNW Alcos were like any other diesel locomotive in the semi-modern CNW fleet, they had Multiple Unit (MU) capability which allows all trailing locomotives to be controlled from the lead unit. No Need for crews on trailing units. RR

What is truly unfortunate is The National Railroad Museum is in GB WI and seeing how GB was their maintenance base they were basically hometown locos, I am sure that would have loved a donation and I am also sure IRM would have been delighted to take one off their hands or any N&W Historical Organization. I mean a good tax write off is probably better than a low $ scrap value check. But I doubt if C&NW made any attempt to do so. I remember seeing them sitting inside Pielet Bros the official scrapyard of EMD

If I remember correctly didn't a few 6700s get reactivated every now and then up till 1990.....I remember in 1992 I built alot of these in HO using Tyco and lifelike bodies with aline motors....

The Epilogue section of Centuries will answer that question for you. RR

I wonder if any of those are still running on a short line somewhere? Maybe some were saved from the scrappers torch.

No. Sadly, all remaining C&NW C628s were scrapped around 1990.

Those 50's are absolute junk! EMD dang near went belly-up because of this line!
@EastEndProductionsArchiv-lm3lq Жыл бұрын
The 50 line was disastrous for EMD. The 60s were an improvement and had greater success. It definitely had a lot to do with GE becoming the dominant locomotive builder, but there were many other factors involved with it. RR
