Hoping you will see this question... I have a very simple question... How much "waterproofness" is enough? I've seen waterproof jackets from 3000mm up to 30,000mm, with various options between those two limits. The more waterproof the more expensive it seems. So how much do you really need?

If the jacket isn't lined you can just use tent sealer to seal the seams up. But of course the fabric still won't be fully waterproof. There's a new Gore-Tex Shakedry which has the membrane as the outer shell itself. Packs like a windshield but is permanently waterproof. However they're super expensive and are kind of fragile.
