I also have a very expensive waterproof jacket similar to yours. Agree it’s a great windbreaker but if actually running I sweat and get just about as wet if we’re in the rain without a jacket. One water proof item I really enjoy if I know it’ll rain during a long race - waterproof socks. Hint: if you wear tights be sure not to tuck them inside the socks! Ask me how I know 😆 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

@@muhammedtolgay1912 i am glad you asked. I tucked my tights into my water proofs socks during the Tunnel Hill 100 this past November. At mile 78 a thunder storm with heavy rain caught me. The tights funneled the water into my waterproof (water tight) socks - i was “running” in a pair of water balloons 🤪🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

@@UltraDad Don’t think so. But I love my Bonatti. I actually use it as a casual everyday rain jacket too. I find it’s a great insulator like you say. And also superb for longer, slow easy runs. When you pick up the pace though you do sweat a bit. But I guess there’s always a tradeoff between breathability and being waterproof.

The insulation from the rain jack is the core issue here. Rain jackets are for rain, because they are not breathable. Depending on the temperature, i prefer breathable insulation jackets over a single rain jacket. Patagonia Nano Air Hybrid -> Arcteryx Proton LT. The Rain jacket is make you sweat more, which is especially dangerous in winter. You don't want the sweat go into your tights and gloves. As rain jacket i used a OR Helium with no ventilation and the material is kind of noisy. I bought a expensive Hoka One Shakedry Goretex jacket, which is even noisier. But it has zipper for ventilation and its large enough to for over your race pack/vest. The side zips are the best solution (beside opening the front zipper) for ventilation, which i have seen so far. I would never go back to rain jacket without side zippers.

I have a Bonatti. It seemed like a good quality jacket like most Salomon products. Mine started delaminating around the neck area after about 2 years. I tried some repairs but nothing seemed to stop it.

How many miles a week are your generally running? I've found that my wind breaker (with water resistant coating), while very thin, does a great job at preventing the cold air from penetrating through and therefore I stay warmer. The only downside is that it doesn't breath well, so some condensation builds up inside the jacket. That said, I've had my eye on the Salomon Bonatti jacket but it is hard to justify the price. Thanks for the review!

The Salomon Bonatti Pro Waterproof Jacket is no longer being made according to their customer service rep who responded to my email . They still offer the 'shell ' and its presently discounted . Thats probably the one you are reviewing here and frankly I am shocked at your positive views because I find this version doesn't hold up well in rain . I am not even talking about driving rain but a steady drizzle for 45 minutes and I am wet . There is a bit of understanding required about breathability in a waterproof jacket - you are not going to be able to alleviate all perspiration from your body as you sweat in the spring and summer IF the jacket is truly waterproof and I get that but this jacket left me wet from the rain not from perspiring . I have seen rave reviews about the superior version , the Bonatti Pro but as I've stated its no longer available as it was perhaps too expensive . Anyone out there using this jacket in rain and staying dry ? I recently bought the INOV-8 StormShell for $200.00 - it works very well for me .
