The century plant will stay at ground level at about the same height for about 30 years, and then it will grow a giant stock from 15 to 30 feet high out of the middle of the plant, and it will have beautiful yellow flowers, which will drop seeds which will grow the next generation of century plants. If you have a century plant in your yard, at some point it will do this, and you can collect the seats and grow more century plants. Some people also call these sentry plants.

man thats so... sad and beautiful in a way, they live so long and explode so tall and beautiful for just a short time and finally die... like us, saving up our whole life just for that little window of pleasure we get when we retire until we shortly die after...

Very beautiful, ours have already grown it’s massive stock and is still growing like a agave Americana, are they able to sprout a stalk multiple times because our Americana didn’t die after the stock got full height and then broke of to the side. I also have been harvesting the lil pups that are growing, the pups I’m harvesting are about 2 years old and about 2 feet around and 2 feet tall.

Just wondering when I should expect the 35' stalk to fall over? I suppose I should cut it down safely before that happens? It looks very heavy.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know. I left mine up for more than a year, and it never fell over, so I ended up cutting it down. It is actually very very light when it’s dead.

@@hoohoohoblin Awesome, it's the most amazing plant I ever grew. That stalk is the talk of the neighborhood. The growth rate was easily a foot a day. I didn't do my home work about the toxic juice and got sprayed with it while cutting down a bunch of pups off the the mother plant. It burns and stings and caused me to stop working. I tried washing it off my arms with poison oak soap and then rubbing alcohol, but neither worked. Just had to take Benidryl and went to sleep. I wont make that mistake twice.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about plants but I'd assume it got it's name the same way a 100 year old egg did. It may not actually be a whole century, but it takes a lot of patience for you to get the result.

It's why common names need to be thrown out and botanical names should he normalized! Plus, it's fun, the second name (species) typically describes the plant.
