You had a great Dr Suess tree! My spike is still sprouting but since the gardeners took so many leaves prematurely, I don't think it can sustain the weight of the stalk much longer. (If it's a really full sprout, we like to keep the dried out shootout as a tree to decorate on the patio).

Amazing ! I live in Phoenix and just this year decided to start harvesting the dead and dried or the large 20 foot live ones that have fallen over during the monsoons. You mentioned that yours was dried before Jaun took it down. One thing that people do with the dried stalks is make Didgerido's. Anyone that has one that's 5 ft or larger seek out a local artist. Once dried they can be made into yard art or instruments. Caution. When wet; Exposure to Oxalic Acid can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, convulsions, coma, and even death. Prolonged or repeated contact can cause a skin rash, pain, redness, blisters, and slow healing ulcers. I learned this a few weeks ago. I felt like my arms and legs were on fire! However; the inner part of the stalk is very sweet. Hence the sugars and flavor when roasted and fermented make Agave Tequilla

Wow. I got the skin pain when I trimmed the leaves on mine. I didn't know the stalk was good for art or instruments. That's cool. Next time!

@alexhalex83 жыл бұрын
@@rmu2867 Oh that's a real shame! So it might have been a good thing the big one bloomed out last year after all.. but at least you have still plenty of potted up pups to replace it, good luck with that!
@rmu28673 жыл бұрын
@@carlovesfam6069 mine have done fine with a few days of freezing each winter. Hard freezes do kill some of the leaves, which I trim off. This winter we had an unusual week long hard freeze. I'm hoping the roots survived and will regrow. On the surface they appear dead.

@@rmu2867 where in Texas do you reside? I'll be moving out to West Texas soon, near Abilene and am wanting to grow these. I'm hoping they do well in the clay soil out there. My dad was trying to start growing agave pups, but the freeze killed them, too. He planted them last year, as well.

How long did it take for the plant to grow that big and sprout the Large Texas asparagus?
@rmu28673 жыл бұрын

Thank you for sharing this. I have tried many times to grow agave americana from seed, and I haven't yet had success. At the end you mention pups popping up from seed. Do you think those pups sprouted from seed simply scattered in the yard as opposed to pups that may have been emerging before the mother plant bloomed? Thanks again!
@rmu286710 ай бұрын
I think they did pop up after it bloomed and seeded. I got many more after that happened and much further from the "mother" plant.

I’m having to cut mine early. Because the previous owner planted it under the telegram wires. And I’m not risking the bill. Mine right now the stalk is about 15 feet.

Bummer. However, if you cut it before it blooms, you can eat it. You'll have to look that up though. I don't know the process.
