If we'd paid more attention in the 30's maybe we could have avoided war".

I don't quite agree about the war. Your doctor was right about political analysis and verticality/horizontality. But, I who fought in the French army from Kosovo to Mali via Afghanistan and the Ivory Coast, I can tell you that going to war is both extremely rewarding and even incredibly enjoyable. The first time I found myself "on fire", I literally shit myself on it and it made my comrades laugh. It happens to a lot of men when the first encounter is a bit rough. I suffered, I saw a lot of suffering and I feel like what we did was for nothing. Besides, the enemies we fought in foreign countries, we find them in France now... But if I had the choice, I would do it again without a moment's hesitation. For the experience, for the camaraderie, to have images in your head...

I have great respect for veterans, especially those who fought in WWII, and I agree with most of what he said, except one point. That war was unavoidable the moment Hitler used the Reichstag Fire to consolidate power. He was a warmonger out for blood. The French could have stopped him in 1936, when he remilitarized the Rheinland, but only through a war that neither their military nor their public had the stomach for. Sometimes the authority on one side wants war and all we can do is oppose evil like that. WWII from the side of the Allies is one of those rare occasions of a just war.

i have sort of created a cool epic fantasy in my head, very war torn, every battle in the style of medieval warfare but with modern technology, sure most use shields and swords and stuff but there are special soldiers that use guns and they're usual called stuff like "dragoons, or bolt-strikers, etc." it really depends from kingdom to kingdom. also every battle you can hear gunfire overlapping with sword clashes and the occasional blast of magic. this may be just in my head for now but it does have a main character: her name is Akane, she's a young kitsune who since she grew up with only humans (Akane is the only sentient being in the village that isn't a human at that). so basically Akane's mental age aged along with the humans to the point that she's a sniper at 58 years old (which is really young for a kitsune). funny thought: some of the strong kingdoms replaced their Calvery horses with motorcycles
