In this video I talk about ceramic bearings and do they need lubrication, which is kinda what the title says - funny that......

Silicon-Nitride is quite impressive. I think the latest generation of ceramic-based materials has the fracture toughness for duty in an engine, no problem.

As I have said before a material that is very slippy is best for bearings, i always use bearings made from banana skins I find they are the best all round.

Yes, but it must be a vegetable/fish based lubricant, I find smoked mackerel oil to be best and the fragrance is out of this world! Banana/mackerel, Mmmmmmmm

I’m surprised to hear you say “gaulding”. That’s something you typically hear in the southern US. People where I live have the ole “gaulded” isn’t a word debate. They say it’s “galling” and not “gaulding”. I don’t get in the debate. I’ve always said “galling” or “galled”. So I personally don’t mind which word a person uses. I still understand the meaning either way. Lol. Just never heard a foreigner use it before. Cheers bud

What about ceramic pistons and cylinders? What's your knowledge of that? I have always wondered why nobody does it. Love your videos, has increased my tone on KZbin significantly.

Not sure about tough? Don`t tough materials have a high modulus of elasticity, and a high Young`s modulus, (most types of steel)? Ceramic bearings are definitely strong, and so have a high Young`s modulus, but their elasticity is low, therefore they are relatively brittle. You can smash a diamond with a hammer blow. I suppose you might mark a steel ball? Love your vids - How do you make so many? X

Strong is term we don't really use in engineering with a more descriptive add-on so to speak. Tensile strength, yeild strength etc are more apt. You are right though toughness or being tough was the wrong word. Shit the bed lol

You don't know what you'r talking about ... First understand what is lubrication, then you'l realize that ceramic bearing due to their low friction coef., don't need lube. It makes the opposite effect.
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 6 жыл бұрын
LMAO! Dumb comment of the week - well done. You said it yourself knobhead; "due to their low friction coef" i.e there is friction - friction = waste heat and wear.

i was told ceramic bearing can shatter under very high load (like if the motor locks up up or drops a valve or something) where a steel bearing wouldn't, is this true?

Depending on the bearing material, but generally they can do. But that's selecting the wrong bearing for the application
@DanielMRamos

There are bearings that require no lubricants in the traditional sense. There are three I can think of off the top of my head. Air bearings or steam bearings do not require conventional lubricants as they self lubricate via the flow of air or steam. Air bearings are awesome, but require precise manufacturing and a power source to work. Magnetic bearings do not require conventional lubricants either as it is also a contactless bearing technology, but it also requires a power source. Electrodynamic bearings are also contactless bearings which are similar to magnetic bearings; however, they use the lenz effect, so it is a more passive magnetic bearing technology. Any kind of contact bearing will eventually reach a physical limitation, hence conventional lubricants will be required in my assessment. Some bearings can operate using dry carbon lubricants, but they are not suitable for engines.

How can you possibly say it's too hot. You live in England. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. Our summers amount to about 5 weeks; very similar to your summers. Are you daft? I'd seen plenty of your countrymen in Italy on holiday. We called them lobsters. Couldn't get enough heat. Man up and grow a pair. Thanks for the info..

The jungle sucks the big one. Our sweaty time is in mid to late August. It's like a Louisiana Bayou. All the heat and humidity comes up from Florida. It's unbearable. I have accepted all the seasons. If not you suffer too much.

If you go the real Direct Injection closed-exhaust-port route with high pressure fuel pump, what if you use the high pressure fuel for a hydrostatic bearing?

@@dirtygarageguy However, friction or no friction as long my ceramic bearings always more spin than steel bearing and my bike perform better than steel bearing and my ceramic bearings can last in high temperature as steel bearing cannot last, and my ceramic bearings can be use without any lube, and it perform great, better use it for yourseft instead of just making wild guess in your video, other have use it on their bike and they are happy about it check other video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6WXo2qPrcR_eK8 not like you not even test on a bike
