Please direct questions to my Facebook page Evolution Stoneware Pottery or email me through my website www.evolutionst... . This is a pottery video showing the process for mounting a traditional goat skin head on a djembe. This is step 1 of 5. Keep in mind I'm not an expert on heading djembes. To see how I made and glazed the drum shell, check out my other videos. This was made for you by Janis Wilson Hughes, owner of Evolution Stoneware Pottery. I'm making this as a special present for myself. This is my first time making such an instrument. Traditional djembes are made out of solid wood. Some modern djembes are made with synthetic body materials like PVC.
I ordered my rings, rope & skin from the company Djembe Drums & Skins. Their website is www.goatskins.com . The skin I used is a thin, pre-shaved, 18" round goat skin. There are many options. I also got the DVD "How to Re-Head a Djembe" by Shorty Palmer, owner of Djembe Drums & Skins. I recommend it for more detailed instructions and explanations on heading a djembe.
I also used the wonderful free videos on this playlist from World Wide Drums as a resource on how to rehead a djembe. • Djembe Repair & Re-hea...

The drum playing in the video is me playing my Meinl 10" mahogany djembe.
